For the first time since 2006 I will once again contest an endurance race but this time fulfilling an ambition to drive in a 24hr race. Recently Mitsubishi announced their intentions to return to circuit racing in the UK ( which they haven't done since the 80's ) with the new Evo X and just last week they confirmed the car will be finished in time to contest the Britcar 24hr Race at Silverstone (UK ) and I was contacted to join the team by fellow team driver James Kaye as one of the 4 drivers required to pilot the car. I've successfully raced in a few Britcar ( the main endurance events in UK ) events from 2004-2006, with some class podiums to-boot with an EP3 Honda Civic however this time its with a brand new factory Mitsubishi Evo X with this race being its first outing ever - and a first for me joining a factory team.
The car has just over 400bhp and is loosely based on a WRC spec chassis with various modifications to suit endurance racing and a wind tunnel-developed 'Test and Service' aero package as seen in the artists impression mock-up and is being built in the same workshop as the infamous Mitsubishi WRC cars.
The car is entered into Class 3 and the overall entries is some 65+ cars for the race.
As many Speedhunters would know, I have driven a fair few 4WD cars previously, most with excessive horsepower ( Our Evo was 550bhp), on and off circuit as well as FWD and RWD with most of my success behind the wheel of a 4WD car - therefore the prospect of piloting a new Evo X is exciting and I hope its handling and power characteristics should be put me in familiar territory to put in a good show for the team and the cars first outing.
We've a difficult task ahead as the car is brand new ( it is still being built as I write ) and wont have much testing if any prior to the event but I hope to gain the experience of my first 24hr race in style and no doubt we'll be working hard to get a result for Mitsubishi and the team.
Big thanks to Mitsubishi and to my sponsor / official car-care supplier to the team, Autoglym for making this possible.
I look forward to giving you all an update next week after the race, fingers crossed for getting out there and some smooth running!!
