McLaren Automotive launched their new MP4-12C Supercar earlier this week at their Technical Centre in the UK. The new car will go into production in 2011 and feature a McLaren design and developed Twin Turbo V8 and cost around £150,000

CEO, Ron Dennis' plan is for McLaren to produce a range of sports cars in the coming years and the MP4-12C fits into the Ferrari 458/Lamborghini Gallardo class.

Personally, I am somewhat underwhelmed with the styling, but I do understand the reasons for this. McLaren want a design which will not date quickly. Generally, you need a reasonably generic classic shape for this.
The styling has few stand out features and reminds me of the Lamborghini Gallardo and in particular, the Ascari KZ1 from the side.

The front and rear have received late styling changes, prior to the launch, from new McLaren chief designer, Frank Stephenson, who also has the Maserati MC12, Ferrari 612, new Fiat 500 and the 1st generation BMW Mini to his resume.

The front 3/4 view has echos of the original McLaren F1 with the outer air intakes and the surfacing over the rear wheel and engine cover.
Under the skin, the car is much more advance....

The chassis uses a new composite production system, which is a one-piece Carbon Fibre tub, weighting around 80kg. As this is one component, its much quicker to produce as well as stiffer.

The 600bhp Twin Turbo 3.8 Litre engine is produced by McLaren, mated to a seven speed dual clutch gearbox.
The gearbox is clever as it has full launch control, steering paddles and a 'first pressure' system which primes the gearbox ready for a gear change, much like a pre-focus on a SLR.
I've heard rumours a GT racecar is on the cards, but nothing official yet.

With the car two years from Production, what do you think? Is it too conservative, or just right?
