The legend of the Porsche 917 has it, that the car was such a frightening thing to drive, that many of the factory drivers felt a sense of relief when assigned to the lesser 908 open cockpit cars. With the 917s hitting warp speeds in excess of 240 mph at Le Mans, this isn't surprising.

Now much has been made of the 917s exploits at Le Mans but the history of the 917 at Daytona is also quite interesting too. This is especially true when you hear stories about how Pedro Rodríguez would literally drift the 917 around the superspeedway bankings. Remember back in 1970, there was no bus stop chicane on the back straight to slow the cars down. This combined with a profound lack of downforce and bia-ply tires would certainly have made for a hairy ride.

This Gulf Oil promotional video will give you a good feel for the state of motorsport in 1970, both in terms of the cars, but also the role of personality and film-making. I can't help but smile to myself when I see how formal JWA team boss John Wyer comes across in his interview. Times certainly have changed!

Ok let's continues on with our tour of the Porsche Museum. We've already shown you the restoration workshop and the start of the main exhibition, and now we'll walk through to the finish of the displays. Our first stop packs quite the punch with a 917K being flanked by Hans Herrmann's #64 Porsche 908. This car is famous for coming second at Le Mans in 1969 to Jacky Ickx's Ford GT40 by a mere 120 meters. Is that enough dish for you? An interesting fact, for any train-spotters in...

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to fill out the 2011 Speedhunters Survey. While we have been operating the site based on instinctual observations for the past few years, having you tell us outright about your automotive lives has been a real eye-opening moment for us. We've known for a long time that many of you have a deep interest in Japanese car culture, but what was more unclear to us was if you appreciate our efforts to showcase automotive content outside of this sphere....

I know I missed the boat on this one, but I hadn't watched it until recently, and I really enjoyed the series. This is part 1 of a series of videos following Gunnar Racing and thier restoration of a Porsche 917 with some interesting history. Some great insights into how detailed restorations can be, and how these monsters were originally built by Porsche. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I just got to the hotel after my first day shooting the Rennsport Reunion IV at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. I'm pretty beat after a day of hiking around track, but I wanted to throw up a quick picture I snapped during this afternoon's exhibition session. I'd say the view of an RS Spyder and a Gulf 917K running side by side nicely sums up the magic of Rennsport. I've gone plenty more to come from Laguna Seca, but if you'll excuse me I think it's time to head down to the Monterey...

Hi all. Well it's time to showcase PT2 of our visit to the S&N Automobilzentrum facility (it's too large to use the word "Shop"!) in Aachen, Germany. In part one of our shop tour, we showed you the work rooms and the front of house, and now we're going to head over to the back of the warehouse. I always enjoy looking through the storage areas of big race car shops. You never know what gems you will uncover -like this complete, ready to run flat 12, Porsche 917 engine. Speaking...

"That Highway Sound" is what grips us all to a greater or lesser degree. We find it in many places from the...

A week in racing, as well as politics, is a very long time. From the frozen wastes of the Var and Le Castellet, I am now pitched into the very agreeable surroundings of the Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island for the 15th edition of the Concours d'Elegance. The show is actually tomorrow but keen as mustard me, I ventured onto the Golf Course to see what is in store when the Sun rises in the morning. Straight out of the Weissach version of Rowan & Martin's Laugh In was the Martini Racing Porsche...

Back in the glory days of the Roman Empire, the alignment of the planets was considered to be critical to planning any major event. When the planets got together in line then the outlook was generally considered bleak, ask Julius Caesar, he was assassinated on the Ides of March, 44BC by a gang of friends and admirers when they thought that the position of Mars made him especially weak. However sometimes the alignment is benign especially when combined with the law of unintended consequences. Back...

Well Exotics and Luxury month is about to end and we're about to usher in a month devoted to AWD cars in all shapes and sizes ( although you can expect to see a lot of Imprezas, Evos and GT-Rs )... I wanted to end my own writing on the subject of supercars with a good look at two legendary machines Dino and I encountered right at the end of our Ferrari Museum tour. I don't know what the Galleria Ferrari museum director was thinking when they put these two cars in a separate room from the...

No top-flight sports car series or race would be complete without the likes of Porsche and Ferrari. This year the two of them will be going at it hammer-and-tong in the GT2 category, a vital part of the endurance racing fabric. There was a time, however, when these two giants vied not for class honors but rather for the overall win. That took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The premier class in international sports car racing from 1968 through 1971 was Group 5. This allowed for five-liter...

Regular readers will know that September is Porsche month here on SpeedHunters and Rod, Antonio and I trekked around Europe back in July eventually reaching Spa Francorchamps for the annual 24 Hours race. So what better way to round off a month considering the best of Porsche with a homage to one of the great temples of speed, the old Spa Francorchamps circuit. Many of you will know already of Spa, where the Grand prix circus plies its trade annually, treating the difficult, very fast track with...

The Answer is Blowin’ in the Wind……….. You’ve all heard the old sales pitch. Take two great concepts and mix them together to produce twice the product or more. All well and good, except that is rarely the case, usually the strengths and benefits of both ideas get diluted in the process and somehow more becomes less. However when the principle does work the results can be spectacular. Back in 1971 Porsche were faced with a bit of a problem, what to do with the all...
