I've hardly finished unpacking from my last Speedhunting trip, and already it's time to hop on a plane and head to Seattle for this weekend's Formula Drift event. Before I move on to cars sliding around on pavement though, I have a few more photos to share of cars sliding around off the pavement at the X Games last weekend....

Sunday was the final day of the X Games 15 in Los Angeles and for gearheads like us, the schedule saved the best for last. Following Saturday's Moto X comp, the course inside the Home Depot Center was leveled and new the rally course was constructed in its place. By Sunday morning, the course was complete and the teams entered the Home Depot Center for morning practice. Up until this point the Ford Fiesta teams had dominated on the tarmac, but many wondered how the Fords would perform on the dirt section and most importantly how they'd fly over the massive gap - a centerpiece of X Games rallying....

I am sure many of you might wonder what it takes to turn a regular, bone stock- as it came from the maker EVO X into a dominating fire breathing Time Attack monster such as our recently unveiled AMS Performance / NOS Energy Drink Time Attack EVO X. Well today Speedhunters has a special treat for you as I am going to take you behind the scenes and show in detail how our time attack evo came to be. So this is in fact our time attack evo as it came to us from Mitsubishi and as shown by the look on Eric’s...

Another early morning and another road trip. Today it was south on Interstate 5 and through some surprisingly light LA traffic to the Home Depot Center in Carson for X Games 15 - more specifically the rally portion of the event. I just got back to the hotel after a day of shooting, so here's a few photos from the day's practice and qualifying action....

What's up everyone! My name is Marc Marquez. Rod was gracious enough to ask me if I wanted to a guest spot on Speedhunters featuring RC Drifting (as they are all AWD cars) and of course I couldn't pass it up! I love the work these guys do and i'm more than honored to contribute! In this short article, i'll give you a small glimpse of what the RC Drift scene has evolved into, hopefully you all like it! Just a short little background on myself, I've been in the RC drift scene for...

I grew up in England where, in the early Sixties I had a paper route. Somebody on that route subscribed to Hot Rod Magazine and I'd sit on the kerb under grey skies surrounded by grey cars and read about red and yellow cars under blue, California skies. I so wanted that life. In 1963, two American dragsters owned by Dean Moon and Mickey Thompson, visited England. My dad took me and my friends to see them and I was hooked on "Americarna." It took a long time to figure out how to make...

I thought I would search out some good youtube Rally action following the Group B retrospective today, but I ended up choosing two great clips of Ari Vatanen and co-driver, Terry Harryman on the Manx Rally, way back in 1983.

Most people will be aware of the famous Pikes Peak video which is so good, we've featured it twice! Always good to feature something different.

Vatanen was driving a rear wheel drive Opel Manta 400 Group 4 Rally car. Even so, some great action, particularly when Ari slides through a gate around 1.40 in the second video! Got to love the 1980's on screen graphics!

Today, Vatanen is up against his old Peugeot boss, Jean Todt for the FIA presidency later this year. There is an interesting interview with him here, from RadioLeMans.com Midweek Motorsport show earlier this week if you are interested.

This mesmerizing blue EVO X belongs to Ryan Gates. After seeing a lot of EVO Xs this month I came to the conclusion this car doesn't need any aftermarket bumpers. This vehicle already looks as it shoud: aggressive and purposeful. All other modifications are inside the car and under the hood. Let's take a closer look at what makes it tick... The large Seibon sticker hints at the carbon fiber treatment this car has undergone. The hood, trunk, doors and even the roof are made from this precious...

We round off this AWD month on Speedhunters with a look back to the golden age of Rallying, Group B. A time when rally cars were true supercars. Four wheel drive, over 500bhp, mid-engine layouts, space-frame chassis and massive budgets. It is remembered as the golden era of Rallying, but it would only last a few years. Rallying in the 1970’s was all about the domination of Ford Escort. One of the most successful rally cars of all time. It won multiple national and international championships...

Last month there was fervor in the automotive world over the news of Ferrari’s leaked patent application for “Hybrid 4WD” drive-trains. In these documents deposited by Ferrari were various solutions for an all-wheel-drive system for both front-engined and rear-engined models. Essentially the drawings showed in-board or alternatively in-wheel electrical motors that would power the front wheels in aid of traction or to help the car tackle slippery surfaces. Whether this will enter...

Earlier this month I posted a photo of Mazda 323 GTX rally car, but there's one more AWD Mazda I wanted to acknowledge before AWD month is over - the Mazdaspeed Atenza (AKA Mazda6). With a 2.3 direct injected turbo engine and AWD, the MS Atenza was a grown up alternative to the Evo and Impreza and a direct rival to the Subaru Legacy. Unfortunately the car didn't sell all too well, and it only lasted for a couple model years. I searched around a bit looking for a good example of a tuned Mazdaspeed Atenza, but came up empty handed. The car in the photo is a tuned concept version that Mazda showed at the 2006 Tokyo Auto Salon. Here's hoping we haven't seen the last of Mazda's turbo AWD days. -Mike Garrett...

I wasn't sure which side I wanted to show guys, the front or the back. I ended up choosing the front because the visual impact was greater. This thing has to be one of the hottest looking Impreza's out there. It is rocking wheels that measure 18"x10 +1 on the rear and 18"x10 +5 in the front. For more amazing pictures of this car you can log onto the owners thread on NASIOC . -Jeroen Willemsen First spotted on Hellaflush

There's something about rallying that draws people in. Could it be that we're drawn to mother nature, and also the taming such wilderness through our technological monsters? There really is something magical about ruining the silence of a quiet back country road the torrent of noise coming from some million horse power, all-wheel-drive, aero'd out, econocar. This 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was built for just that --ruining the piece of a quiet of Pike's Peak while getting up...

With AWD-month coming to an end I thought it would be interesting to look at a pretty rare car to come out of Japan. When people think of Subarus the rally-bred Impreza is without a doubt the first that will come to mind, with the more mature and elegant Legacy not so far behind. The boxier and more awkwardly styled Forester may not be every one's cup of tea, but this didn't stop Subaru Tecnica International going crazy with it. By tuning the 2.5L turbo flat-4 and fitting Impreza running...

Mark Berry and Russell Newman are the two-man team that has dominated Australia’s time attack scene. You’ve already seen glimpses of their insane Hi-Octane Racing R34 GT-R weapon in previous posts, and courtesy of Auto Salon Magazine here is a closer look at what it’s packing. Previously campaigning an R32 GT-R, Mark Berry and Russell Newman have conquered numerous racing events all over Australia. The R34 GT-R started off as a standard road going version which Mark Berry purchased...

Having posted a few R35 GT-R features so far I thought it would be interesting to see how the most affordable supercar on the planet is actually put together. It's not often that manufacturers let you wander around their production lines, but Nissan has nothing to hide and gave us an in depth tour of how a car of this caliber comes together. It all begins at the Yokohama plant, where the mighty VR38DETT is put together. The GT-R's engine couldn't have been assembled in a better place...

A lot of the Retrospective articles we put together for Speedhunters tend to focus on lost golden eras of motorsports -- brief moments in racing history when the conditions were ripe for some truly wild race cars to hit the track. Perhaps it was the eras that burned short but sweet which resonate the most with us race fans... It's a bit like James Dean -- it seems a life cut short helps in the creation of legend. This rings true for the DTM Class1 era from 1993 to 1996. For four breathtaking...

It has taken one week of driving and a few days of reflection, but I have come to the conclusion that the Audi RS6 may well be the best all-rounder money can buy. The first day I picked the car up from Audi Japan I headed straight down to the Hakone Turnpike for a day of hard driving. One quick blast to the top of the summit revealed an immensely powerful car, one that was maybe trying to play supercar too hard, given its obvious limitations in other areas. Based on the A6 the RS6 (RS stands for...

I just got a link from a friend who pointed out this AWD Mini project at Super Fast Mini's . I thought this would be a nice addition to this AWD month. Inside the Mini community it is very popular to enhance the performance of the car with Honda parts. It is no different with this Mini. They started with a bare shell and went to work with the custom fabrication and placing of the AWD system. On the outside we see wider fenders to accommodate the larger wheels and extra sticky tires. The B20 VTEC...
