Last year, together with Rod, John Brooks and Antonio, I visited the Spa 24 hour race in Belgium and saw the Donkervoort D8 GT for the first time. I'd heard about it on the internet previously, but when confronted with the real deal, I was amazed how good it looked. The car screamed for a closer look, and I knew I had to visit the company someday -fast forward to last Tuesday. After some email contact with Donkervoort , they invited me to come over and take some pictures of the new factory and...

Another awesome video by the guys behind Wagenwerks, they used their editing tools to good use. It really shows that practice makes perfect. The AWOL theme stands for Air & Water On Land, that's some creative thinking.

"Blow,Winds and crack your cheeks! Rage! Blow! You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout til you have drenched our steeples, drown'd the cocks!" I did not actually see King Lear out in the storms that hit Road Atlanta during the middle of the Petit Le Mans last Saturday but I saw plenty of candidates for the role of the Fool, me for one. Sitting in the warm, dry media centre contemplating a two hour session in the pit lane, I looked at the weather radar on John Dagys' computer and could...

Amongst the Speedhunters on site at the Petit Le Mans, I've been designated the press room worker. So while John Brooks and Linhbergh were off shooting the race, I've been sitting here watching the Speed TV feed and listening to Radio Le Mans. Out the window I can see one corner of the track, but I might as well be in my living room as I'm mostly getting a sense of the race through media, rather than direct experience. Not that I'm complaining! The weather has been pretty rubbish...

Besides all the BMWs present during the RSG Racing Days , there were also a whole bunch of other cool machines at the event. The car above is a genuine Opel Ascona 400 of which only 268 were produced. It was cool to see the owner Robert Keil using the car for what is was intended for. This car was immaculate inside and out, as proven by this engine bay. I quickly snapped this picture when one of the mechanics popped the hood. The engine capacity is 2.4 liter and the driver has 230bhp on tap. After...

Speed Month on Speedhunters just wouldn't be complete without a look at the one and only German race track built for the purpose of all-out top speed: Avus. This is a temple of speed which will forever be linked with the pre-WWII era Auto Union and Mercedes Silver Arrows streamline Grand Prix cars and even the creation of the Autobahn itself. Although planned out as early as 1909, Avus opened in 1927, just on the outskirts of Berlin, as a 12.160 Miles or 19.569 km two-way blast through the Grunewald...

We round off this AWD month on Speedhunters with a look back to the golden age of Rallying, Group B. A time when rally cars were true supercars. Four wheel drive, over 500bhp, mid-engine layouts, space-frame chassis and massive budgets. It is remembered as the golden era of Rallying, but it would only last a few years. Rallying in the 1970’s was all about the domination of Ford Escort. One of the most successful rally cars of all time. It won multiple national and international championships...

It has taken one week of driving and a few days of reflection, but I have come to the conclusion that the Audi RS6 may well be the best all-rounder money can buy. The first day I picked the car up from Audi Japan I headed straight down to the Hakone Turnpike for a day of hard driving. One quick blast to the top of the summit revealed an immensely powerful car, one that was maybe trying to play supercar too hard, given its obvious limitations in other areas. Based on the A6 the RS6 (RS stands for...

Since we all have now looked at the Rallycross Ford Fiesta vid, let's compare to the first of the overblown rally cars to blast up Pikes Peak: The Audi Quattro as piloted by Walter Rohrl in 1987. Enjoy!

It seems like, for any random snap post we put up on the site, there is a Speedhunters' reader who can share some insight and knowledge with the rest of us. Such is the case of my "AWD DRIFT" post a few stories down.... Thanks to our readers we now know, the Audi A4 featured in the post was built by KA-Tuning in Norway and is a regular fixture of the Gatebil track events. Check the videos to see how it looks moving!
Thanks to itsmehc and TheNorwegianKid!

We've seen a lot of videos recently, with a certain DC Shoes rally driver going sideways making smoke in his AWD Subaru... perhaps it's time to make some kind of on track competition for this past time? Or would the smoke from all four tires spinning make actual AWD tandem battles completely impossible for spectators to watch? Just a thought.... :R

Unfortunately all my AWD features got used up during VAG month, so I'm going to show a couple FF cars in the coming weeks, just to break things up a bit. This TT isn't AWD as Rod originally thought, but it's still worth a look, as it sports a unique one-off body kit. The body kit is made in full carbonfiber and is original from Audi. Wesley, 23 year old owner of this car, is the first and only person in the world with this OEM certificated kit. The carbon kit was painted in white and...

As the British DTM driver, Jamie Green sat on the grid at last weekend's Norisring race, he probably didn't fancy his chance of winning the race. He had only qualified in 7th position and surrounded by so many similar cars, victory wasn't exactly within his grasp... But win the race he did!...

Other than family, the biggest thing I miss about the UK is Goodwood Festival of Speed. I went to every one until 2005 and it was always a highlight in my Motor Racing year. I would see few cars run up the hill climbs. I would spend most of the time in the paddocks or on the front lawn where a stunning display was always to be had. The very wet 1997 FoS was the second date with my future wife, Joanne! Must be a petrol head. Anyway, I digress. Gerry Judah always creates a fantastic sculpture each...

When two tribes go to war, one is all you can score.............................. Well they finally did it, Peugeot won the Big One. The 2009 24 Heures du Mans. The Lion has roared. The number 9 Peugeot 908 Hdi-FAP driven by Alexander Wurz, Marc Gene and David Brabham covered 382 laps of the 13.629 kilometre circuit, 5206 kliks in total or 3,235 miles. The average speed was a tad under 135 miles per hour, a sobering thought. The winners were one lap up on their team mates Stephane Sarrazin, Franck...

Day 2 of the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours and Day 2 of the scrutineering process. This is a form of torture for the teams who hate the disturbance to their preparations for the race. The idea is that the cars are taken from the pit boxes on the circuit by road to the middle of the City of Le Mans, which is nightmare of traffic jams and tram related hold ups. The factory teams arrive in their purpose built transporters and go through a process where the cars are checked over as are the technical papers....

This Audi S8 has been created for those that want that extra oomph, performance wise. The engine, a 5.2 liter V10, is based on the same engine that is used in the Lamborghini Gallardo. The stock engine puts out 450bhp and 540Nm of torque, but for Mariani that wasn't enough. They adjusted the engine management and replaced the exhaust to free up an extra 51bhp. They didn't stop there because the exterior also got a makeover. Most obvious are the wheels, they measure 19" with 255/35 rubber...

Day One in the run up to the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours...............stars of the show for Monday were Audi with their trio of diesel powered R15 prototypes and making the last appearance in their stellar career, Corvette with a brace of C6.R s. The "Verifications Administratives et Techniques 24 Heures du Mans" is perhaps a unique occasion in top line motorsport as the fans can get up close and personal with the cars. Of course Rod seemed to have sent his New Jersey weather to La Sarthe.....
