I've been sitting on photos of this wild '52 Buick land speed racer, in anticipation of Misfits and Mavericks month since last summer. With its lead sled style and bare metal finish, the car stood out from the field of Bonneville specials. And given that Bonneville is full of mad-hatter cars, that's really saying something about the unique vision of this insane machine! The Buick Super Riviera was built by New Mexico resident and artist, Jeff Brock in record time for last year's Bonneville...

Are we drowning in S-Chassis yet? ... I know, I know... too much of a good thing isn't always best is it! Oh well... To break up the monotony I present to you a pickup truck! To the surprise of a few of the Speedhunters audience, I snuck the above image into the original announcement of the 2009 Speedhunters awards as a great example of stance. Some of you were confused that I wasn't showing a stretch-tire-special , but I think this machine is a great example of perfect stance ... look at...

What has always fascinated me is that a hunk of metal can make a person do the most irrational or illogical things. Why is it that many of us would get up at the most ungodly of hours only to climb in to a car and spend a day's festivities surrounding none other than cars? Or what is it that makes us wake up so eagerly for a car, yet we have to literally pry ourselves out of bed on most other mornings? Or to even drive a car with literally zero creature comforts across the country, just to spend...

The first impression you get when stepping onto the Salt is that the place is eerily clean. It feels sterile, serene, like you've stepped onto another planet. So, as we close up speed month, let's take one last look at the Bonneville salt flats. The design of a lot of these land speed roadsters remind me of World War 2 fighter planes. They're simply amazing. Early mornings are easily the best time of day to be out on the Salt. There are barely any spectators out, and the only thing you...

We thought it would be a fitting closure to our special August Speed theme to release a new Will Roegge film. Entitled "Four Hundred", it's a quick snapshot of the Nish Land Speed Record team and their Royal Purple Streamliner. The film also brings you a little closer to the experience of Bonneville... ... and allows you to ride along with the Speedhunters team as we set about shooting at the event. We hope you enjoy this new film and the exclusive access we arranged with Nish Motorsports...

When you're at Bonneville you see all sorts of crazy contraptions while walking (and driving) around the five mile long pit and spectator area. You witness things that can rocket to speeds just shy of 400 miles per hour to things that are created to look the best while flossing at 20 miles per hour. Basically, you see the whole spectrum from pure performance to pure hardparking. It's phenomenal to be able to to be able to take all of this at a single event. With such an eclectic mix of cars...

The engines have stopped and silence returns to the Salt Flats once again, at least until the next round of speed and madness spills off Interstate 80 on the Utah/Nevada Stateline. Actually madness is an inappropriate word, at least in the case of Nish Motorsport. Certainly it is the case that many of the people who rock up to Bonneville Speedway seem to have had an advance dose of the Sun to addle their wits but there is nothing random or unbalanced about the Royal Purple #998 Streamliner crew....

Speedhunters as a website has been designed for people like myself who have exceptionally short attention spans... I get bored very easily and constantly need to switch up what I'm focused on in order to feel excited and inspired... So I just can't look at Japanese cars and drift photos all the time. It just becomes too repetitive for my cross firing brain and I lose interest.... so for those of you who are with me on this, let's look in real detail at the main meat of the car culture...

I've really been enjoying my fellow Speedhunters work from the Bonneville Salt Flats. I would love to go there at least once in my life, but in the meantime I can enjoy all these pictures which we recently got from our friends at Super Street magazine. You may have read yesterday's story about the Dandy team with their Mazda FC -this is the most recent Japanese built car to have hit the salt flats... but it's JUN Auto which probably has built the most Japanese Bonneville cars. Have a...

As we got ready to start the Speedhunters coverage of Bonneville Speed Week I was silently hoping there was going to be a Japanese campaign at the event. The legendary Japanese tuning shop Jun Auto's Bonneville runs are now the stuff of legends, and I was praying we'd be able to find something similar to document at Speed Week. However, when I looked at the Bonneville entry list there were no Japanese teams listed... the closest thing to an Asian based team was an entry lodged from Singapore...

Here's a great shot of the Dandy RX7 disappearing into the heat haze at Bonneville last week... It looks fantastic as a high rez desktop photograph... BTW The team tells me that the car managed to hit 230 mph on Friday... that's pretty crazy!... You know where to get it yes? :R

You know, I get the sense the Bonneville car builders are all closet inventors; each with their own home brewed speed secrets learned from many years or even decades of running on the salt. For these constructors there are no boundaries... the only limit to a build is their own imagination... At Bonneville it often seems like the crazier the design and the more outlandish a engine transplant, the better. So whenever I came across a rear wheel drive Japanese car at Bonneville, I was usually expecting...

Amongst all the American Rods, Customs, Streamliners, Trucks, Lakesters and Muscle cars running down the salt at Bonneville, we actually managed to find a few Japanese cars here and there. Perhaps it's our own bias, or the fact that we know you guys tend to be more responsive to these machines, but we had our eyes peeled for cars of a Nipponese flavour during our visit to the salt last week. This post is by no means an exhaustive catalogue of every single Japanese car that attended Speed Week...

As a Bonneville newbie, one item that's become clear to me is that the chassis and engine selection for a land speed record car are two very separate and distinct choices for any car builder. Most competitors combine the engine and the chassis in order to enter what appears to be hundreds of different classes. Often a builder will try and find an overlooked class, build a special car and go for the record. People may even show up at Bonneville with more than one engine in order to set multiple...

I was on the phone a few minutes ago with Eric from Twins Turbo Motorsports and we got to discussing Bonneville race car construction and maintenance. He said to me that Bonneville race cars normally have rather short lives as "The salt gets into everything". .. well I can also say that the Salt has also gotten into me too. Bonneville Speedweek is definitely the most special automotive event I've ever had the privilege to attend and all I can think about today is what to do there next...

OK, OK. I left you all hanging on with the Nish Motorsports Royal Purple Streamliner speeding away from me in the push truck on its way down the Long Course at Bonneville Speedway. So what happened next? In a word, loads. Well, to describe the next three days as a rollercoaster ride would be something of an understatement. No sooner had the purple rocket vanished out of sight, Mike Nish cut the engine and ended the run. The gauges showed that the exhaust temperature was climbing rapidly, so the first...

The Bonneville Speedweek brings all sorts of people to the event. Some drive from far away lands in their hot rods that lack what many of us normally take for granted in our cars; cushioned seats, carpet, sound deadening, or even a roof. But the trip to "the Salt" in your home brewed hot rod or rat rod is a pilgramage to pure automotive glory. There's a huge sense that everyone that is at the event lives the lifestyle to it's fullest with style is one of the biggest aspects of the...

SpeedHunters' coverage of the 2009 Bonneville Speed Week has today focused the attempt of the Royal Purple Streamliner to break the record. However there is still much else to celebrate and here is a taste of the ingredients on offer. There seems to be an inexhaustable supply of cars that look just right all lined up on the salt catwalk. Then round the next corner is a reminder that it is SPEED that we are chasing across the flats. Here a '53 Studebaker that hit 240 mph last year...........
