As someone who's in love with vintage Japanese cars, the JCCA New Year Meeting is simply overwhelming. There are dozens upon dozens of cars inside and outside the event which I would deem spotlight-worthy, and this year I picked out a few that I found to be especially great. One of them is this Kenmeri Skyline based out of Tokyo....

When I finished shooting the BRZ STI Concept a couple of weeks ago at the STI HQ in Mitaka, I headed upstairs to the STI Gallery to see if there were any cool cars on display. It seemed I had picked the perfect day to have a wander... ...as there was a cool triplet of WRC cars on display. Next to McRae's 1998 "P14 WRC" Prodrive rally car was Petter Solberg's 2006 WR car... ...that was used in the 2007 Rallie Monte-Carlo. The STI staff let me have a nice look around the car and even...

While browsing through Freestyle Rides' Summernats 25 coverage , one car in particular made me stop dead in my tracks. This eyebrow-raising drag car is based on a tiny Fiat 126. It looks like a real life version of the caricatures I used to draw as a kid! Initially my searches for more info on this FSM Niki (what the 126 was sold as in Australia) came up fruitless, however it turned out that good friend Mark Boxer from Hoon Media had met the owner. This V8-powered Fiat was the built by Daniel...

There are, of course, many ways to modify a Porsche but not all improve on the original package. GMG Motorsports are no strangers when it comes to tuning Porsches and now they have a complete package to turn your Porsche into a real track animal. The kit is called the GMG World Challenge track package and consists of predominantly suspension components. Their latest project is this 2011 Porsche GT3 RS that belongs to a customer in AZ. This is the 19 th car to receive the complete GMG treatment. The...

With the 2012 drift season rapidly approaching, a few of the new cars are starting to break cover. Historically, in the UK anyways,Team SATS are usually the first to unveil their intentions for the forthcoming season. True to form, they revealed their 2012 team car at Autosport International. The first change I am sure you have noticed is the colour. The white base to last year's design has now been replaced with an eye opening yellow / gold whilst still sporting a similar livery as the 2011...

For the final car spotlight from my visit to Canepa Design, we have one of the most legendary automobiles ever produced - the Ford GT40. Like it's cousin the Shelby Cobra, the there are lots of replica GT40s out there. To find a genuine one is something very special....

The other day we took a look at a record-breaking Dodge Daytona stock car from the Canepa collection, and today we have another historic stock car - albeit one built for an entirely different purpose. Back in the mid 1970s an effort was made by NASCAR to create a class for its cars in IMSA and FIA sports car racing. This '75 Ford Torino is a result of that short experiment....

Throughout my tour around Canepa Design, I was overwhelmed with historic race cars from around the world. From Can Am monsters and NASCAR record breakers to Le Mans winners - the selection was incredible. However, among the Cobras, Porsches, and Ferraris, one of my favorites was a lowly old Datsun....

NASCAR is something that's always bound to split opinions. Some people love it, some absolutely despise it. No matter what your thoughts on the sport are, I think we can all agree that the stock cars of yesteryear were much more exciting machines than today's cars. With that in mind, here's a look at a '69 Dodge Charger Daytona I spotted last month during my visit to Canepa Design....

The Stohr F1000 is a fairly new beast to the hotly contested Formula 1000 series run in SCCA Club Racing. First offered back in 2006, the car has undergone a few revisions to bring it to its current state of development. I had the chance to spend some time watching, listening, and observing a few of these cars at the track a few months ago, and they have some nice details I will share with you all. I like to share. The Stohr car, and other F1000 cars, seemingly takes a fair bit of influence from...

Before we continue with the AE86 Matsuri coverage I wanted to quickly show you this cool Trueno I bumped into as I was making my way down to one of the grandstands at Tsukuba. It looked great on its black Watanabes... ...but once I checked out the other side of the car I noticed it was running also running on gold Panasports! Apparently the owner did this only for the Matsuri, wanting to show just how different the car looked with two types of rims. Of course it wasn't only the wheels that looked...

Every now and then I receive a submission that's worth sharing. An unusual car that popped into my inbox yesterday was this Opel Rekord. Built in 1980, this Rekord E1 has been painted in the same yellow that's used by taxis in Germany, hence the Yel low cab nickname. The old school Zender Turbo wheels are certainly a perfect match. I don't have many details on this car, so I'm unsure what suspension it's running. These cars change hands for next to nothing these days. But I'm...

While Rauh Welt has become known for producing some amazing looking Porsches, there are of course many more tuners that can turn an ‘ordinary' Porsche into a street legal beast. Take for example DP Motorsport, a company that has been on the scene since 1975. Although famous for building race cars, they've also been churning out some tough street cars like this 1973 Porsche 911. This 911 was built by DP Motorsports to demonstrate their lightweight carbon parts. First they stripped the...

A Silk Cut Jaguar means a lot to a British sportscar fan. It represents a resurgent British racing programme against the might of Porsche and Mercedes – one that even made national TV headlines and the front pages of the newspapers. Jaguar XJRs raced in the World Sportscar Championship and at Le Mans between 1984 and 1993, during the glory period of Group C and the World Sportscar Championship. The livery defines the Jaguar Le Mans programme of the '80s: whichever variant, the purple, white...

If you heard this car, your life would be forever changed. The gaping maw of the 1950 BRM Type 15 hides its 1.5-litre engine – in itself nothing special, but then, like with the Formula 1 turbo cars of the 1980s, there is 1.5-litres and 1.5-litres. This particular 1.5-litre tiddler is a V16. As ever when describing a sound with a story comprising pictures and words, it's difficult to put across the noise this monster makes. But it's like a volcano . Although not remembered as the most...

It's no wonder that the recent return of the Lotus name to Formula 1 has caused such controversy – or that there has been such a fight over the two teams laying claim to it this year. Lotus occupy a mythical place in Formula 1's history: the 'English Ferrari', the innovators, the risk-takers – the winners . But if Ferrari could be thought of as Formula 1's beating heart, Lotus was definitely its brain. The team came from humble origins, as with so many British teams...

Another car I spent some time geeking out on at one of the SCCA Club Racing events from 2011 was this Swift DB5 run by Mark Schue. This car is designed and built by Swift Engineering down in South California utilizing some of their varied and vast engineering and manufacturing capabilities. This car was actually built in 1992; one of the main giveaways might be the aluminum riveted central monocoque, with many modern race cars using a composite monocoque for the central chassis. Riveted aluminum...

How many models of car can say they've won a race? Tens of races? Hundreds? How about a thousand races? The Bugatti Type 35, built and raced between 1924 and 1931 can count over one thousand race victories. It's easily the most successful racing car of all time. At its height, it's recorded that the Type 35 was winning 14 races every week . The Type 35 series is the best-known racing Bugatti and was one of the first racing cars offered for sale to the public. £1,100 (around £37...

To me the Auburn 851 Boattail Speedster looks like the future . It's what you see in movies when directors want to portray a decadent sci-fi image of what's to come: it's the car the bad guy will be driving – and the wheels will fold up when the car needs to take off. Slightly over-excited daydreaming aside, for a car that's almost 80 years old it still has a striking appearance: a 1930s boulevard cruiser given a steam punk make-over. Over-wide, over-long and over here. The...

In Australia, the Ford Falcon has a longstanding rivalry with the Holden Commodore. Both cars are locally-built, four door family cars with the V8 variants drawing fiercely loyal followings. A few years ago Ford Australia released the XR6T (a Falcon in a 6 cylinder turbo guise) that, while offending some of the diehard V8 fans, quickly became known for being potent in the power stakes. Just how potent? Put it this way, the unassuming black Falcon you see here has run the quarter in 8.48 @ 165mph...
