Over the weekend there were numerous reports speculating that California's Irwindale Speedway had been closed. Sadly, those rumours appear to be true. This afternoon, the management of Irwindale Speedway released a one sentence statement confirming that the 2012 racing season has been cancelled. No further details regarding the long term future of the famous 1/2- and 1/3-mile oval have been released. - Charles Kha Photo by Linhbergh LA Times article

Following the unveiling of the TS030 HYBRID, Toyota have announced the remaining drivers for their two car attack on the Le Mans 24 Hours. Joining Hiroaki Ishiura will be two former F1 drivers in Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi. Davidson was without a drive since Peugeot's exit from endurance prototype racing, while Buemi was recently dropped by Toro Rosso. The driver line-up for the other TS030 - which will also compete in the World Endurance Championship - includes Alex Wurz, Kazuki Nakajima...

The Australian Touring Car Championship was an old stomping ground of Nissan's R32 Skyline GT-R; a car that local media quickly dubbed Godzilla. However it's utter domination of the ATCC series came to an end in 1993 when the governing body changed its Class A regulations. The GT-R was outlawed, paving the way for an exclusive Ford vs Holden V8 battle. 20 years on and Nissan have announced they will return to the V8 Supercars series in 2013. The Kelly Racing team will field four Nissans next...

Over the past couple of days a stream of 2012 F1 cars have broken cover. Lotus F1 Team (formerly Renault) launched their E20 with this YouTube video featuring Jonny Smith.

Today Red Bull pulled the covers off the RB8, which designer Adrian Newey says is a continued evolution stemming back to the RB5. Will this be the car to take Vettel to a hat-trick of World Championships?

Meanwhile at Jerez in Spain, the Sauber outfit debuted the Ferrari-powered C31. “The C31 is revolutionary where we had fresh ideas, particularly at the rear of the car" said chief designer Matt Morris. "And it is an evolution where we knew we could carry over certain approaches.”

Force India are hoping their new VJM 05 will guide them to fifth place in this year's Constructors' Championship.

With last year's driver line-up of Jamie Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi dropped, it will be Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne who will drive the Toro Rosso STR7s.

Pre-season testing gets under way tomorrow at Jerez, with the Championship kicking off in Australia in just over a month.

I can only imagine what that moment must have felt like. Although it would've only been a split second, to driver Yusif Bassil it must have felt like an eternity. The moment that I'm referring to is when Bassil realised there was no avoiding the impending, sickening impact. This could be it.

I came across this video via Crank & Piston, who bring up important things in their post. It's unbelievable footage of Bassil living out a driver's nightmare. High collision,  door won't open and the car catches fire.

Not for the faint hearted.

Today Ferrari unveiled their new Formula 1 challenger online, with the live launch ceremony at Maranello cancelled due to heavy snow. The design of the Ferrari F2012 (codenamed 663) has certainly proven controversial, with the dramatic stepped nose being the main talking point. The Caterham and Force India 2012 cars both feature contoured 'humps' to get around the new regulations, while McLaren's MP4-27 features a more gradual nose transition. - Charles Kha

During last year's World Time Attack Challenge I bumped into Andrew Brilliant, a well known aerodynamicist from Yokohama, Japan. Andrew has developed aero for not only high profile time attack cars, but also for Super GT, GRAND-AM Rolex and American Le Mans. One of his recent projects caught our attention: this impressive, all-carbon bodied Evo known as Nemo. ...

One down, eleven to go. And as is customary here at Speedhunters, we'll kick off a new month with a look at what's in store. For February we've decided to focus on Game Changers ; cars that sparked trends, rewrote the rulebook or rocked their sport. We'll be taking a look through various car cultures to uncover the icons that have reached legendary status. As a taste of what's to come on the Japanese front, Dino has a stream of features on some of the more influential demo cars...

My name’s Amaury Laparra and since an early age I've been a huge automotive fan. Although I study architecture and design here in Paris, my passion for cars has only grown more intense. I've been taking photos of landscapes since I was four or five years old, but as soon as I got a DLSR I wanted to mix my passions for photography and cars. Let's start with this shot. I was walking in the streets of Paris when I found this SLR parked a few meters from my home. I shot a lot around...

While browsing through Freestyle Rides' Summernats 25 coverage , one car in particular made me stop dead in my tracks. This eyebrow-raising drag car is based on a tiny Fiat 126. It looks like a real life version of the caricatures I used to draw as a kid! Initially my searches for more info on this FSM Niki (what the 126 was sold as in Australia) came up fruitless, however it turned out that good friend Mark Boxer from Hoon Media had met the owner. This V8-powered Fiat was the built by Daniel...

Toyota Racing has today taken the covers off the highly anticipated TS030 HYBRID. Based out of Toyota GmbH - the German facility used for their previous F1 campaign - Toyota Racing will enter two TS030 HYBRIDs in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours. The unveiling occured at Paul Ricard, where ex-F1 driver Alex Wurz and Nicolas Lapierre performed a shakedown. The TS030 uses an all-new carbon chassis and features Toyota's THS-R (Toyota Hybrid System - Racing) powertrain that was developed with Denso...

Many of you will be familiar with Easton Chang, the automotive photographer whose work regularly graces magazine covers and manufacturer advertisements. However, what few realise is the fact that Easton is self-taught and self-made. Through years of hard work and dedication to his art, Easton has gone from a nobody to one of the established photographers, and has claimed a staggering number of awards along the way. I first worked with Easton some eight years ago when I was the Editor of ASM, and...

This month the 25th Summernats car festival took over Canberra, the capital city of Australia. Spanning three and a half days, the Summernats event (which is short for 'Summer Nationals') attracted 1500 cars and a hundred thousand spectators. One of the big drawcards was the Horsepower Heroes; an invite only dyno shootout. This year's Horsepower Hero winner was Jake Edwards' 8sec Holden Torana. How much power did it make? 1584.8hp at the wheels.

You can also check out one of Jake's quarter mile runs here.

2007 Formula 1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen was behind the wheel of an F1 car for the first time since 2009. However due to testing restrictions, the Finn, who has signed for the Lotus F1 Team, was only allowed to drive a two year old, reliveried Renault R30.

The Iceman's return means there will be six F1 World Champions on this year's grid - a quarter of the field. Raikkonen was dropped by Ferrari for the 2010 season to make way for Fernando Alonso, and has spent the past couple of years dabbling in WRC and NASCAR.

We don't usually run fan videos, but over the weekend this particular one caught our eye. Dubbed Love For Life, it was created by Finn Antti Kalhola, whose vidding efforts have amassed a strong online following over the past couple of years. A self-confessed motorsport junkie with a passion for editing, Antti's latest video is a great compilation from the archives.

Thanks to reader Slappy for sharing.

Corrupt CF cards. They're the bane of our lives here at Speedhunters. Unfortunately with the high volume of photos we take (over 10,000 a week), we tend to encounter this problem more often than most. The dreaded error happened to one of the cards I used during my Singapore trip, but thankfully I was able to recover them. It certainly would've been a damn shame not to share the jaw-dropping array of cars I witnessed at Singapore's HKS Garage R. Singapore is a tiny island in South-East...

Speedhunters reader Peter Brueckner recently grabbed a camera, hopped into his Skyline and headed for the Santa Cruz mountains. Peter's a camera engineer by trade, and his weekend toy is this 1971 Nissan Skyline 2000GTX. Ground Control helped build a custom pair of coilovers utilising Koni shocks. For the rear, Peter has fitted RS Start adjustable perches and springs. Peter's a self confessed Watanabe fan, but he decided on a set of Hayashi Street CRs instead. The fronts are 15x7.5 with a...
