Although I've been to many hot rod events, this was my first time at the Grand National Roadster show. What impressed me the most was the variety of cars there, and how pristine they were given their age. Of course, all of them have had some sort of restoration in one form or another. It makes me wonder what it would have been like to see these cars on the showroom floor. It's hard to imagine them being brand new once upon a time. Just sitting in this lead sled makes you feel like a million...

Day one of the Grand National Roadster Show was unbelievable, seeing the Watson cars and The Rodfather's ride were a big deal for me. So as day two started, Larry and I had our best insoles on to take on another photographic pass at this colossal show. It was a real task to try and see everything, the Fairplex fairgrounds are massive but we were determined! ...

At this time of the year most of North America are putting chains on their tires or scraping ice off their windshields. However the folks in California were rolling their most impressive rod and customs into the Pomona Fairgrounds for the 63rd annual Grand National Roadster show. The GNRS event, held on the last weekend of January, drew over 1000 vehicles, including countless cars that have graced the covers of various custom, hot rod, and lowrider magazines. When the Speedhunters team asked me to...

Yesterday we introduced a new category for the Speedhunters Awards - Muscle Machine of the year. In addition to that, we've created another new category for the Hot Rods, customs, lowriders and vintage drag machines we've showcased on the site over the year.
We've featured and spotlighted a lot of these cars in 2011, and it's time they get the credit they deserve.
Here are the nominees....

Next up on the SEMA menu, Hot Rods and Customs. Here are some of the sweet vintage rides we've spotted so far while wandering through show. The Bel Air wagon you see here is done a period lowrider style. A style that includes some very intricate paintwork on the hood and roof. It's a beautifully constructed build... ... and is absolutely minty clean throughout. Ford has a piece of Hot Rodding history in its booth with the Edelbrock Special. This historic Highboy Roadster has been fully restored...

For the my next Car Spotlight from the Long Beach Motorama, I want to share a very cool Hot Rod that was crafted not here in California but across the Pacific in Japan. If you've been following Speedhunters for a while, then you know that Japanese Hot Rod builders are just as talented as any of their counterparts here in the states. This 1930 Model A is proof....

I'm not going to waste any time showcasing a couple of my favorites from the Long Beach Motorama. There were countless candidates to spotlight, but one of my choices was "Firestar", a 1961 Ford Thunderbird originally built by well known California customizer John D'Agostino....

Now on to the third part of our 2011 Long Beach Motorama coverage. No matter what your automotive preferences are, I always say that everyone owes it to themselves to get out to events like this to see the roots of our car hobby....

Now it's time to jump back into the time machine for another trip to the Long Beach Motorama. I think the organizers of this show deserve a big hand for making the Motorama one of the most unique Hot Rod and Custom shows in the world.
Now on to more great vintage machinery....

If you noticed a lack of activity from me over the last week or so, that would be because I was on vacation catching a little R&R on a cruise up the California coast. As soon as the ship had tied up in LA on Saturday morning, it was back to work. I was off and on my way over to Long Beach for the 2011 Motorama....

The other day I spotlighted a very high riding '55 Chevy gasser from Billetproof. Today I have another '55 from the show, albeit one that's done in an entirely different way....

One of the fun things about shows like Billetproof is seeing old cars from American companies that have long faded away. One the rarities that I spotted this year is this Kaiser Deluxe Coupe with a very unique coat of patina....

Just went through and uploaded some high res desktops from Billetproof for you guys to enjoy. Head over the Desktops section now to find a shot of this radical bare metal Hot Rod, a rusty Falcon Wagon, a mean satin coupe, and a beautiful '58 Plymouth. All are available in widescreen and standard formats.
Have a great weekend everyone!

I think the stories on Speedhunters at the moment a perfect snapshot of global automotive culture at the moment. Dino is bringing the VIP hotness from Osaka, Paddy and Jonathan a dose of classic European motoring from Goodwood, Jeroen has the latest and greatest from Frankfurt, and I'm here with some old fashioned Hot Rods and customs and Billetproof.
Here's the third of my four part look at Billetproof 2011....

On Saturday I made my annual trek to Northern California's delta country for the 2011 edition of Billetproof in the city of Antioch. With this being my third time shooting Billetproof, I decided to approach my coverage a little differently than usual. Taking a page from the book of Linhbergh, I headed out to capture the sights using only my 30mm prime lens....

I'm not quite sure what it is about Mooneyes, but it's more than just a brand. Whether you are looking for legit Hot Rod parts, dress-up items, or just some cool accessories and apparel - the company is an icon in the automotive word. The great events they host on both sides of the Pacific are just the icing on the cake. Here's the second part of my look at this year's Mooneyes Open House in Santa Fe Springs....
