Its been too long since I posted that teaser, but check it out! I'm pretty stoked to be able to see a glimpse of what my project will look like when its done (next year). Here's where the nerd in me comes out, I mocked up this shot of the car in a windtunnel, not that it'll ever see one I'm sure, but a cool image regardless. There is a good chance I'll be doing some CFD tests with this car though, testing out various diffuser, canard, and wing set-ups. For the sake of these concept...

As we got ready to start the Speedhunters coverage of Bonneville Speed Week I was silently hoping there was going to be a Japanese campaign at the event. The legendary Japanese tuning shop Jun Auto's Bonneville runs are now the stuff of legends, and I was praying we'd be able to find something similar to document at Speed Week. However, when I looked at the Bonneville entry list there were no Japanese teams listed... the closest thing to an Asian based team was an entry lodged from Singapore...

Here's a great shot of the Dandy RX7 disappearing into the heat haze at Bonneville last week... It looks fantastic as a high rez desktop photograph... BTW The team tells me that the car managed to hit 230 mph on Friday... that's pretty crazy!... You know where to get it yes? :R

You know, I get the sense the Bonneville car builders are all closet inventors; each with their own home brewed speed secrets learned from many years or even decades of running on the salt. For these constructors there are no boundaries... the only limit to a build is their own imagination... At Bonneville it often seems like the crazier the design and the more outlandish a engine transplant, the better. So whenever I came across a rear wheel drive Japanese car at Bonneville, I was usually expecting...

I've asked myself this question a few times in the past couple days, 'what have I got myself into?!?' Or, 'I sold my Cobra for this?' You might remember my post from a few weeks ago when I sold my FFR. A little scary to dive into such a big project, but man am I looking forward to it! I picked up an '88 RX-7 the other day for $200, basically bought it for the shell only, as most of the parts aren't pristine, as I'm sure you can tell. The owner had it sitting 20 feet...

No particular rhyme or reason for this one, just a clean Ibaraki-based FC3S RX7 I spotted at Tsukuba Circuit a while back. The blue BN Sports-equipped body mixes nicely with the staggered neon yellow Gramlights 57D's, and the owner also get bonus points for street-driving on this stance. -Mike Garrett ...

Over the next few weeks, as everyone anxiously awaits the start of the racing season, lots of car builders from all over are preparing their new cars. While this particular car is not intended for professional drifting use, I thought I'd just show some snaps of this Mazda FC3S truck that's being built at JTP Motorsports, the garage of Formula D FC3S driver Justin Pawlak . While we have shown you other FC3S trucks on Speedhunters previously, this particular FC3S truck is a bit different because...

I don't have much information on this car, but it's a pretty rad looking build for a tin top race car. All the front subframe is aluminum, and it all looks hand fabricated too. Anyone else have any more information on this car? - Carl Jarrett

I just wanted to post up some quick snaps of this car... when I spotted it, parked quietly in the back corner of the highly restricted access race car dungeon that lies underneath one of Mazda R&D facility, I couldn't quite make out what kind of car this was... however, if you look more closely, examining the hood, the bumper vents, and the roofline, you'll notice that this car is an FC3S RX7 Turbo II. I didn't have much information on this FC, but was told that apparently this car...

I took these photos with my Canon SD800IS point n shoot camera when we were filming the Birth of Pro Street film for Spike TV at Formula D Seattle in 2007. This FC "truck" belongs to a guy named Earl, who I met on the practice day before Formula D. His FC stuck out so much from the lineup of normal drift cars! Anyway, I think anyone who builds a car this daring, this flashy, and this cool has got to be cool themselves. Earl is kinda out there, but that's definitely what drifting style...

After seeing all the gorgeous Miata's that Antonio posted I thought I would be nice to see a bit more FC's. The first FC I wanted to share is this orange one that was previously owned by Daijiro Inada, yes the 'godfather' behind D1GP, the Tokyo Auto Salon and Video Option. He enlisted the help of Top Secret and RE Amemiya to build his car. These names are synonymous with top notch builds and it is no different with this rx7. The car is not your typical tuner car with a plethora of...

If you follow the Southern California drift scene at all, then it's likely that you know the name Justin Pawlak, aka JTP. Our boy Justin has been making waves in the media recently, as one of the most popular new drivers in the Formula D series; even ending the season strong with a podium finish at Irwindale this year. Before Justin ever became popular in the Formula D circuit, he was popular in the Just Drift/All Star Bash world and a member of the Dori Dori Club from Cerritos, California. Since...

Let's rewind things for a bit. I was digging through my massive photo archive for these pics... since it's Mazda month, I definitely had to show this blast from the past. The car in the photos is a FC3S D1 car, owned by my good friend Hirotaka Hoshino. Hoshino is a D1GP driver, and the charismatic leader of Geki Kassou Dan , a group of really cool image-having drifters from the Gunma prefecture of Japan. The FC pictured above has got to be one of my favorite FCs of all time. It just looked...

I just got home not too long ago... I went to Shinsengumi, one of our preferred Southern Cali ramen restaurants with a small group of friends after my photo shoot today. The black FC3S in the photo is normally aspirated. It is a daily driven streetcar owned by my friend Justin Pawlak (aka JTP) of Formula D and All Star Bash fame. What I like about this car is it is pretty simple, yet it looks good. The car was purchased for under $1000 without an engine... then Justin put a high mileage normally...

I thought I would continue with the coverage from Tsukuba while Mike is busy covering the Tokyo Auto Salon, nah just kidding. But I did found these pictures al taken at a recent trackday on Tsukuba. Because it is Mazda month I selected all the RX7's that were present to show off the different styles that people use on their car. All the pictures were taken on the TC2000 course at Tsukuba during a track day organized by BE-Circuit . Russ from RE-Extreme pointed me in the right direction with his...

I was just looking through this set of photos that my friend Dean from Mazdaspeed sent me... and I spotted this pic from the 2008 SCCA E-prepared class, which features a crazy looking Miata leading an FC3S RX7 through a turn, but what really stood out to me in this photo was the signature silhouette of that blue RX3 in the background! For sure that Miata looks like it's pretty modified with those huge fenders, Can-Am style rollbar, and circle track looking wheels... but just take a look at that...

My mind has been going kind of crazy over the past few days thinking of what kind of Mazda material to post here. There's just so much to choose from. Anyways, with all this Mazda madness I have been thinking a lot about of the FC model RX7, which in my opinion is one of the best looking Japanese car designs of the 1980's. I was thinking about some of the cool FC's I've seen lately and decided to upload a desktop of SKR Engineering's FC time attack car that I saw back in November. Powered by a 13B with a sideport and a T04S turbine, it's capable of running Tsukuba in the 1:00 flat range. Widescreen and standard versions of the wallpaper can be found in the Desktops section....

Since I knew January was going to be Mazda month, I have been planning to do a post with photos of various grassroots RX7 drift cars I have shot in the USA and in Japan over the past year or two. As I hunted through my old photos trying to remember which events had cool RX7's, I realized that RX7 drift cars are actually pretty rare. Sure, there's quite a few of them out there, but compared to something like a Silvia or even an AE86, their numbers are small. I guess that makes seeing one even more noteworthy. On that note here's a few of my drifting RX7 shots from the archive....
