Last year at the SEMA show, the Ring Brothers debuted their latest project - a '64 Ford Fairlane two-door sedan known as the Afterburner. The car would end up winning Ford's "Best of Show" award at SEMA, and every time I walked by, the Fairlane was literally swarmed with people. So much for getting any usable photos... So when I spotted the car at the Grand National Roadster Show sitting in the open, I figured I'd shoot a few pictures to make up for the lack of of this car in our SEMA coverage....

Some more big news for Formula Drift today. Falken Tire has just announced the latest addition to their drift team for 2010 - Justin Pawlak. Justin will be driving an ASD-prepped 2010 Ford Mustang similar to Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s - making for two Mustangs on the Falken team. This is huge news for Team Falken, and a big move for JTP, who impressed last season in the Bergenholtz RX8. The 2010 season just keeps sounding better and better... For more info, check out the press release Falken put up...

Last month Gerald Elliot sent us some photos of his 1970 Ford Cortina GT based out of Nova Scotia, Canada, and we've been waiting until the start of Readers Month to post it. The little Ford has been outfitted race-built 2.3 SOHC tuned to make 240hp naturally aspirated. It also includes things like a Mustang T5 trans, a quick-change rear diff and some very racecar-like bodywork. As you can see in the photo, the car sees the track regularly. Thanks Gerald! -Mike Garrett...

It wasn't until just recently that modern muscle cars started to shed some of their uncoolness with the younger crowd. Seduction and sexiness are two traits that did not ooze from the last generation of modern muscle cars, like the 5.0L Fox body mustangs, F-body Camaros and Trans Ams. Rather than being sexy, that generation of muscle cars gave the thought of moth balls, stuffy air, decades old Levis jeans and sweaty bottoms! I have to admit that I was one of the many that disliked those cars...

A word of warning. This post contains no JDM material. Nada. Zilch. Reader discretion is advised. 'Concours' is a word not often discussed on these very pages. Although it literally translates to 'contest', the word connotes cleanliness, originality and even a certain level of perfection. We've become obsessed with modifications as a reflection of our own personalities. We all all want to be identified as unique, as our own selves which is of course is perfectly natural. But when...

The Mustang RTR-C is simply a far-fetched dream of mine that came true thanks to the hard work and dedication from everyone that I teamed up with for the project. While it started as a one-off SEMA project and a sick street car for me to rock, it has spawned into something much bigger and has turned into the inspiration of me wanting to create the more affordable Mustang RTR and the overall RTR brand. My initial vision was pretty simple, I wanted to build the most badass modern Ford Mustang street...

Developing new cars and supporting current racers might be their speciality, but Barwell also have a lot of experience running historic cars. Parked up in front of the prep bays are two stunning examples they take care of: a pristine 1969 Porsche 917 and an original 1697 Ford GT40. The Porsche 917 is chassis number 013/34. It was built for the 1970 season, and although it didn't have much success whilst racing with John Wyer Automotive's Gulf team its claim to fame is that it was used in...

Regular Speedhunters will be aware from our preview last week that the Intercontinental Rally Challenge started its season last week with the Monte Carlo Rally. It was a dominant and quite surprising win from Mikko Hirvonen in the all new Ford Fiesta S2000. Hirvonen led from the start from Skoda’s Juho Hanninen. Peugeot followed closely with last year’s winner, Sebastien Ogier (above!) and Stephane Sarrazin and Kris Meeke in hot pursuit. One of the favourites, Jan Kopecky had a dire start...

Since our theme this month is misfits and mavericks, I figured I'd quickly post about a car that played an important role in my teenage years - a '72 Ford Pinto. Yep, a Ford Pinto , the car that's infamous for erupting into a ball of fire with a slight tap of the rear bumper. While this hot rodded Pinto was about as shoddy as it gets, it's turbocharged engine swap also made it one of the funnest cars ever....

The legendary Monte Carlo Rally starts today, with a prologue stage in the French Riviera, en-route to Monte Carlo. The ‘Monte’ is one of the longest running motorsport events, dating back to 1911, and is normally part of the World Rally Championship. Due to the ridiculous FIA rule that rally venues need to rotate in and out of the World Championship, the premier class this year is the popular Intercontinental Rally Championship. The 'IRC' started in 2006 with the assistance of...

The 2010 Motor Show season starts this week with the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Previously a show, full of announcements, the economic downturn and the state of the local car industry has pushed this show to an also-ran in the Motor Show season. The biggest news is the worldwide debut of the new all-world Ford Focus. Previously, North America has been laden with a reshelled version of the original Ford Focus which debuted back in 1998, while the rest of the World has a class...

In what was likely the biggest car debut at the LA Auto Show, Ford took the wraps off the 2011 Fiesta. Again, this car is already on sale in other parts of the world, but it represents a big step for Ford as they begin to "European-ize" their American car line up. I had a chance to drive a Euro spec Fiesta at the SEMA show and was quite impressed with the little car. When Ford pulled the covers off the US-spec car on Wednesday I was pleased to see that it looked just as cool the Euro versions that have been making rounds as part of the Fiesta Movement....

Yesterday at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the North American auto show season kicked off as the LA Auto Show opened its doors for media days. The overall mood at the show is one of subdued optimism, with the auto market finally showing signs of recovery after a disastrous period of bankruptcies and losses. While some automakers like Nissan decided to sit the show out completely, others debuted some very important (and exciting) cars in LA....

I figured I'd follow up yesterday's Cadillac post with another find from Billetproof 2009 - a bagged '62 Ford Thunderbird. Just like the Caddy, this a period style '60s kustom, with the exception of the modern suspension that allows it lay frame at the press of a button. Sooo sexy. -Mike Garrett...

Here is a video that Ken Block sent me this morning of himself and fellow rally driver Chris Atkinson having some fun in Ken's 1978 Ford Escort. Under the hood sits a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Millington engine that boasts 280 BHP. It also is setup with WRC-styled paddle shifting and a six-speed sequential gearbox. I think this video does an incredible job of capturing the definition of fun!

I've hardly finished unpacking from my last Speedhunting trip, and already it's time to hop on a plane and head to Seattle for this weekend's Formula Drift event. Before I move on to cars sliding around on pavement though, I have a few more photos to share of cars sliding around off the pavement at the X Games last weekend....

Sunday was the final day of the X Games 15 in Los Angeles and for gearheads like us, the schedule saved the best for last. Following Saturday's Moto X comp, the course inside the Home Depot Center was leveled and new the rally course was constructed in its place. By Sunday morning, the course was complete and the teams entered the Home Depot Center for morning practice. Up until this point the Ford Fiesta teams had dominated on the tarmac, but many wondered how the Fords would perform on the dirt section and most importantly how they'd fly over the massive gap - a centerpiece of X Games rallying....

We round off this AWD month on Speedhunters with a look back to the golden age of Rallying, Group B. A time when rally cars were true supercars. Four wheel drive, over 500bhp, mid-engine layouts, space-frame chassis and massive budgets. It is remembered as the golden era of Rallying, but it would only last a few years. Rallying in the 1970’s was all about the domination of Ford Escort. One of the most successful rally cars of all time. It won multiple national and international championships...

Speedhunters reader Adam D passed on this link to a fantastic collection of Rally videos on Youtube... As we just did a retrospective on Ford Rally cars, I chose these two videos on the history of the Ford RS200 to highlight. Cheesy canned music aside, these youtube videos are full of some great historical footage of this the RS200s. It's good watching if you want to learn more about Ford's rally program in the legendary Group B era.
