I'm really missing Japan right now. I plugged in my external hard drive a bit ago to hunt for some lowdown car pictures and the memories came flooding back. Memories of Watanabes, SSR's, Solex carbs, and musical horns. We thought you guys might be getting a little tired of the late model flushed out cars we've been showing this month, and figured another gallery of retro JDM coolness can never be bad thing....

With the passing of the last round of the 2009 Formula D season, Irwindale will go down into the history books as an event of many great memories. Moments of great jubilee, celebration, quiet reflection, and, of course, moments of disappointment. But this was the moment. The moment when Chris Forsberg rolled back into the pit area with his team mates, drivers, and media personel running towards his car to congratuate him on the ultimate intangible. He got out of his car, quickly removed his helmet...

Have you guys had enough Irwindale coverage yet? Hopefully not, because here's some more photos from last weekend's Formula D season finale. Up above we have Ross Petty's S15 looking as cool as ever while smoking up his Falkens through infield bank. By the way, we're trying to schedule a visit to Garage Boso as part of our Driver's Month features. Keep an eye out for it soon....

Now for my second installment I wanted to take a closer look at the track itself and tell you my experience driving shotgun with Stephane. The car we drove in was this immaculate late '97 E36 M3. It is a 3.2 evolution model in a rare alpine white color. I have noticed that this car is a lot of fun on the track especially with a few selected upgrades. The engine itself is pretty much standard except for a cold air intake system, the emphasis on this car has been the handling characteristics. It...

Yesterday I went to the Nürburgring again to witness on off the latest ‘touristenfahrten' weekends. We have two more to go but after that the track will be closed until March next year. I got in contact with Stephane Benini from Clash Production , he offered me a ride in his newly acquired BMW E36 M3. Off course I immediately said yes. But before I will tell you more about that experience I wanted to show you guys the diversity of cars that you can find on the parking lot that surrounds...

The sky was already emptying out its emotions when we arrived onto the track in the morning. Water literally flowed down the parking lots and access streets around the circuit, and as Rod and I hurried into the media tower, we tried our best to walk around deep rivers and ponds that quickly formed from the morning down pour. As we stepped into the dry and warm building, the sensation of wet socks was the first thing that greeted us. I looked down at my watch, and it wasn't even 7am yet.... The...

When you have the time to actually witness a professional racing team do what they do throughout the course of the day, you can't help but to feel intimidated. I had the honor of being a guest with the BMW American Le Mans team and had the opportunity creep, snoop, and stalk the team and their drivers throughout the course of the weekend. This being my first real motorsport and the first non-rice event I've shot, there was a bit of a culture shock as I started to experience the world of real...

I was ploughing through the archive today looking for material for a couple of SpeedHunters' BMW assignments when I came across this shot, I thought why not? It was taken on the opening lap of the first ETCC race held at Spa back in July 2004. It has a strong BMW theme and I remember being pretty pleased with it at the time, double page spread in Sport Auto as I recall, making Editor Schurig happy. Of course it is pure luck to get such symmetry but as Gary Player once said " the more I practise...

The other day we got an email from our buddy Ernie Manasala at NOS Energy Drink. Seeing how it's BMW month, Ernie wanted to share a couple photos of some BMW's built by his older brother Mike at E-Shift Performance in New Jersey. As you'll note from the opening shot, these aren't quite your typical "Euro" Bimmers......

Anyone misfortunate enough to stumble into my office will find scenes of confusion. Books and magazines sit cheek by jowl, references in the process of being checked, another pile of slides awaiting scanning, jobs waiting to be despatched. There are several boxes of photo material, film, prints and slides marked "random". Actually that are labelled something else but the auto editor won't allow me to type that word. As you are aware it is BMW month, so I thought it would be mildly amusing...

One of the most prominent features of Japan and its people is the ability to modify outside things to make them their own. This applies to cultural elements as well as automobiles. We've seen examples of this on everything from hot rods and kustoms to Rauh Welt Porches, and I figured I'd kick off my BMW features with a gallery of BMW's from the land of the rising sun....

The first impression you get when stepping onto the Salt is that the place is eerily clean. It feels sterile, serene, like you've stepped onto another planet. So, as we close up speed month, let's take one last look at the Bonneville salt flats. The design of a lot of these land speed roadsters remind me of World War 2 fighter planes. They're simply amazing. Early mornings are easily the best time of day to be out on the Salt. There are barely any spectators out, and the only thing you...

When it comes to high speed events in North America, the hallowed salt at Bonneville is what comes to most people's minds, or maybe the Silver State Classic held on an empty stretch of highway in Nevada. Besides those storied events, there's another top speed gathering which has been gaining popularity this decade - the Texas Mile. Held on a runway in the town of Goliad, TX, the Texas Mile started in 2003 and has become a meeting point for some of the fastest cars and motorcycles on the continent. Unfortunately a search around the net didn't yield a whole lot of photographic coverage of the Texas Mile, but I did mange to find a few interesting shots....

As we start to wind-down the summer of 2009, and gear ourselves up for the autumn and holiday season to come, let's take a look back at one of the greatest ricer events this year: the Just Drift/Ziptied All Star Bash '09! This event is more than just a mere drift event. All Star Bash is a weekend long party celebrating tire smoke, horse power, grassroots drifting style and flare, and a just enjoying sport for what it is --pure fun. It is also a weekend of celebration to the grassroots US...

Seattle has quite a reputation. It is known for its eclectic mix residents, amazing food, the birth place of mainstream modern American coffee culture, the genesis of a man that took the rock genre from 80s hair metal to really what we know it as today, and a place where die hard drift fans reside. From the days coming up to the Seattle event, I heard a lot about the fans. Many say that these die hard fans rival that of Atlanta. Despite the threat from rain throughout the weekend, the fans came out...

The Bonneville Speedweek brings all sorts of people to the event. Some drive from far away lands in their hot rods that lack what many of us normally take for granted in our cars; cushioned seats, carpet, sound deadening, or even a roof. But the trip to "the Salt" in your home brewed hot rod or rat rod is a pilgramage to pure automotive glory. There's a huge sense that everyone that is at the event lives the lifestyle to it's fullest with style is one of the biggest aspects of the...

With Formula D's wide-reaching schedule, people from all around North America get the chance to watch high level professional drifting in person. That's great, but those of us that travel with the series typically see the same cars and drivers at each round whether it's on the East Coast or the West Coast. One thing that I've enjoyed doing this season is taking a look around the spectator parking lots at each event to see what the locals are driving.
Last weekend in Seattle, I saw a nice assortment of iron in the parking lot of Evergreen Speedway and thought it might be cool to post up some of my findings....

There's been a lot of business to take care of at our office in Vancouver for the past few months, so it's been a little while since I've been in the field with a camera... But that all changed today as we just shot at two rather different automotive scenarios, each within a few miles of one another. It all started a week or so ago, when John Naderi from Streetfire.net invited us to a shoot he and Will Roegge were conducting just down the road from Evergreen Speedway in the Seattle area...

For my 86 Day contribution, I originally had this idea to do a post with 86 different photos of AE86's. Although that would probably set a record for the longest Speedhunters post ever, it turns out that it would be a quite a time consuming process.
Instead, I settled on 20 different AE86 photos I've shot at both drift and grip events in Japan. There's an interesting mix of cars here, and all of them represent the 86's never-ending popularity in its homeland....
