As we gear up for the onslaught of the 2010 season, everyone seems to be getting busy. Yesterday I tagged along with Chris Rado and the World Racing team to a dyno session for their time attack Scion, and in just a bit I'll be heading out to the Inland Empire to get the latest on the Rockstar Drift tC. Before that though, I need to finish up my coverage from the weekend's Famoso March Meet....

Moving right along, here's the second part of my trip to Famoso Raceway for the 2010 March Meet. March has always seemed like the unofficial start of the racing season, and taking in this drag race culture was a fantastic way for me to kick off the 2010 season....

This weekend a huge number of drag racers gathered at Famoso Raceway near Bakersfield to take part in the annual March Meet. The March Meet has long been one of the biggest nostalgia drag gatherings around and this year was no different, even with rain off and on throughout the weekend. With Sunday looking like the day with the smallest chance of the wet stuff, I headed up to Famoso to have a look....

Time to take a a break from posting your guest blogs and finish up my coverage of the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona. Here, we'll take a look at some of the interesting cars in the indoor show, a few from outside, and some of the historic hot rods from the "Cars That Made a Difference" exhibit....

OK, let's continue right where I left off last time with a look at the "History of the Race Car" exhibit from the 61st Grand National Roadster Show. In the history of drag racing, there are few things cooler than mid '60s production cars like the two above....

For the second part of my coverage of the 61st Grand National Roadster Show, I'll be showing some of the cars found in and around the "Suede Palace". This where you'll find most of the traditional hot rods, "rat" rods, and period style customs. By now I'm starting to become rather familiar with this scene, so it was interesting to compare the cars at the GNRS to other events I've been to....

In the history of hot rodding and American car culture in general, Pomona is one of those places right up there with the likes of Bonneville, Daytona, or Detroit's Woodward Avenue. Not only is Pomona home to one of the world's most famous drag strips and the NHRA museum, but it's been the location of the Grand National Roadster Show for several years now. The GNRS is one of those must-see events, and one that's been on my to-do list for some time. Yesterday I headed up to Pomona's Fairplex to have a look......

While I have your attention, with my recent feature on the Ferrambo, I'm also going to take you for a quick tour of the shop which built this oddball contraption: Divers Street Rods. Although these photos were shot last summer, I'm sure you'll find it interesting to see what wild creations Divers will be unleashing into the hot rod show car world in the next year or so. Most race shops and car builders operate out of anonymous industrial estates, but not so with Divers Street Rods. Their...

As I sit here listening to the rain outside turning the LA basin into a disaster area, it's time to continue with my visit to Starlite Rod & Kustom right here in lovely Torrance, California. I've had the chance to visit a lot of fantastic car shops, but as you can see there's something very special about Starlite. In fact, I can't help but feeling proud that such a cool shop is located right in my neighborhood. Anyways, on with the tour....

Last month during our coverage of the Mooneyes X-Mas Party, I did a spotlight on a radical chopped and slammed Chevy pickup convertible. After seeing a sticker on the truck for a shop called Starlite Rod & Kustom, I got in contact to arrange a visit. As It turns out, Starlite is located right just a few minutes away from me, right here in Torrance, CA. Last Friday morning I headed over to the shop to have a look at the facility and some of their project cars....

If you've ever read Hot Rod Magazine in recent years, you'll know there aren't too many Toyotas to be found in its pages. However, a few years ago Hot Rod featured this wild Toyota Corona as part of its "Dare to be Different" theme. For the magazine to feature a Toyota means it must be something special, and indeed this car is. Built by Mitch Allread of Newhall, California, what was once a basic '68 Corona sedan is now a street-going circle track racer that also happens to stay true to its Toyota roots....

Most of the cars associated with traditional rodding or customs tend to focus on replicating and remixing different aspects of the 1940s and 1950s. The earlier part of the '50s is especially popular to for the custom car crowd as it was during this time that the cars were simple and pure. The closer you got to the 1960s, the more outlandish and wild the cars became, to the point that they were little more than crazy undrivable sculptures. During this period brief period of time in the early '60s...

A few weeks ago the wife and I picked up a much-need bookshelf for my office. As I unpacked boxes of magazines and books that had been stored away for a couple years, I came across a stack of Hot Rod magazines from the late '60s and early '70s. I think I paid about five dollars for the whole bunch at a swap meet several years ago. There's really no better way to look at automotive history than browsing through the pages of a vintage magazine. The articles, the photography, the advertisements, and even the smell of the pages - it's quite the experience. ...

I have to admit. I am a complete newbie when it comes to most things Hot Rod, custom, low rider, or anything that relates to the overall umbrella of American automotive culture. When I arrived at the Mooneyes X-Mas show at the beginning of the month, I had no idea what I was in for. I arrived expecting to see plethora of grey haired, mustached men walking about and talking about about the by-gone days of proper Hot Rodding. What I was actually introduced so was as scene that has been revived, in...

Let's continue to look at the Speedhunters coverage from the Mooneyes Xmas Party 2009. I'll start things off with a few shots of Tania Simon, who accompanied us as a pinup model for the day. Linhbergh was planning to do a big shoot with her and Courtney Day at the show but unfortunately the weather hampered our plans. I ended up having to quickly photograph Tania inside this 1960 Oldsmobile. We didn't have much time to get into a groove, but still ended up with some sexy looking photos...

My shoes might still be drying out from the rainstorm over the weekend, but the weather in SoCal at the moment is incredible. You know, one of those picture perfect days where the snow-capped San Gabriel mountains can be seen from all over the LA basin. If only it had been this nice at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday. Oh well, even with the rain, we still have plenty left to show you guys from the 2009 Mooneyes X-Mas Party....

I just got home a few minutes ago from a day of Speedhunting with Rod at the Walden Speed Shop in Pomona - concluding what's been an eventful a few days of California hot rod and custom culture. It all kicked off on Saturday with the Mooneyes X-Mas Party at Irwindale Speedway, and even though the rain kept some people away, there was still plenty to see in the flooded parking lots of the speedway....

"Everything you know about motorsport is wrong"... this is a thought that kept flashing through my head the first time I saw drifting at Irwindale Speedway. It was a wet and cold evening in December 2006 and I was witnessing full blown D1GP drifting for the first time. This was an experience which was to change the course of my life in many respects as it was the first time I came in touch with the relatively new motorsport and it challenged everything I held to be dear and true about car...

The Essen Motor Show is in full swing and I was there to capture it all on camera. I noticed that there were less tuners and fewer cars than previous years, but still there were some fine examples to be found. I'll start with showing you the diversity of cars that can be found inside the Messe. Of course there are lots Porsches, this version made by Speedart grabbed my attention with its red accents. This BTR-580 had its premiere on the Essen Motor Show and is based on the 997 Turbo 3.8l. I will...
