We are back to cover the rest of the 2012 Grand National Roadster Show’s AMBR award. First up is my favourite entry for the award for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster. I am a huge fan of Roy Brizio’s work. To me, this 1932 Ford is poetic and graceful and it caught my eye from across the room. The muted palette is so sophisticated and unexpected. Usually the entrants are highly saturated in colour, or abyss deep shiny black. These Halibrand style Kidney Bean wheels really seal the...

The "America's Most Beautiful Roadster" competition formed an important portion of the 2012 GNRS show. Dating back to 1950, the AMBR award is the ultimate title in the North American hot rodding scene and in the next two stories we are covering its 10 contestants and the winner.
The contest is only for roadster hot rods and is only open to cars dated from 1937 and earlier.
Home garage builds competed against million dollar projects for this coveted 9 foot trophy, which has been awarded to some of the most famous Hot Rods of all time over the decades....

Although I've been to many hot rod events, this was my first time at the Grand National Roadster show. What impressed me the most was the variety of cars there, and how pristine they were given their age. Of course, all of them have had some sort of restoration in one form or another. It makes me wonder what it would have been like to see these cars on the showroom floor. It's hard to imagine them being brand new once upon a time. Just sitting in this lead sled makes you feel like a million...

Day one of the Grand National Roadster Show was unbelievable, seeing the Watson cars and The Rodfather's ride were a big deal for me. So as day two started, Larry and I had our best insoles on to take on another photographic pass at this colossal show. It was a real task to try and see everything, the Fairplex fairgrounds are massive but we were determined! ...

At this time of the year most of North America are putting chains on their tires or scraping ice off their windshields. However the folks in California were rolling their most impressive rod and customs into the Pomona Fairgrounds for the 63rd annual Grand National Roadster show. The GNRS event, held on the last weekend of January, drew over 1000 vehicles, including countless cars that have graced the covers of various custom, hot rod, and lowrider magazines. When the Speedhunters team asked me to...

It's time now for the fourth and final part of my impressions from the 2011 Mooneyes X-Mas Party - and what better intro than the face of Coby Gewertz' amazing "Van Go". The heavily customized Ford Econoline has popped up at several events after its debut at this year's GNRS. I can never get enough of it....

Who says that December is slow? Between preparing the Speedhunters Awards nominees and going through our photos of the year, I actually find this to be one of the busiest times of the year. In addition to that, I have more to show from the Mooneyes X-Mas Party at Irwindale.
Here's the third of my four part look at the event....

Some people celebrate the holidays with office parties and fruit cake. In California we celebrate by partying all day with a bunch of Hot Rods and customs.
Here's the second part of my look at the 2011 Mooneyes X-Mas Party....

It's mid December now and for many it's a time to relax and reflect on a year gone by. Perhaps you've been enjoying indoor automotive activities like scale modeling or RC cars . Maybe you've been in the confines of your garage tinkering with a winter project. Some of us enjoy this off-time, others not so much.
In Southern California though, the middle of December means one of the biggest and funnest events of the year - the Mooneyes X-Mas Party at Irwindale Speedway....

With Dino's Mooneyes Japan coverage in full swing, I thought now would be a great time to publish a contrasting story, showcasing some European Hot Rodding. It's always interesting to see how different cultures around the world remix, rework and replicate their ideas about foreign car scenes. I'm sure any of you who live in the west but are fans of Japanese car scenes know exactly what I'm talking about. We see some type of car action in a far away land, and either draw inspiration...

A few days ago, we received an email from Daryl Scott, a photographer from Seymour, Indiana correcting a recently published story on the "Steam Punked" hot rod I recently shot at SEMA. It turns out that I had incorrectly credited my favourite SEMA 2011 build, it was actually constructed by Slaughterhouse Customs and is called The Jackal. I hereby stand corrected!...

It's likely that Henry Ford would roll over in his grave, if he could see what people were doing to his beloved Model As. It makes you wonder what people will be doing to Honda Civic shells eighty years from now. Transformed into flying cars? Recycling bins? Teleportation pods? This 1930 Model A sedan has been so severely recreated as a zombified Hot Rod, it's hard to see much of the original machine. But I think this is the appeal! It's a great example of the Steam Punk styled creativity...

It's rather unfortunate that many of us never got to experience the glory days of 1950s and 1960s drag racing, but thanks to events like the Eagle Field Hot Rod Gathering we can at least get a taste of what it was like for racers and fans. Here's my third and final look at last Saturday's event. ...

As we stare at this wicked little Roadster burning its white wall slicks in front of the crowd, let's go ahead and jump into the second part of my coverage of the Eagle Field Hot Rod Gathering.
As I watched the tough Hot Rods and dragsters getting sideways down the track, I could think of no better place to be on an early fall afternoon in California....

Just seven days after my encounter with history at the Long Beach Motorama, I found myself once again in the midst of Hot Rodding as it was. This time the setting was Eagle Field, the old army airstrip near the town of Dos Palos in California's Central Valley....

Now it's time to jump back into the time machine for another trip to the Long Beach Motorama. I think the organizers of this show deserve a big hand for making the Motorama one of the most unique Hot Rod and Custom shows in the world.
Now on to more great vintage machinery....

If you noticed a lack of activity from me over the last week or so, that would be because I was on vacation catching a little R&R on a cruise up the California coast. As soon as the ship had tied up in LA on Saturday morning, it was back to work. I was off and on my way over to Long Beach for the 2011 Motorama....
