Twenty Years.............roughly a third of most people's adult life and yet it seems to have flashed by in the twinkling of an eye. Back in 1990 I had just left the advertising world and was working in Covent Garden for a design agency, we were so hip and so cutting edge or so we thought. Actually it was pretty good time for me, I seem to recall getting a new company car early in the year, a convertable 325 BMW, leather, flash wheels, The Full Monty. The pay and perks were pretty good too, so...

Motorsport at the highest levels is a global activity, Formula One, Moto GP, World Rally, and in North America, NASCAR, all make headlines on TV and in the newspapers. Endurance racing is not at that global level but is dependent for success on a few events that have achieved classic status, Le Mans 24, Nuburgring 24, Sebring 12 Hours, something of a pattern there. There are also individuals who have been responsible for keeping the flame burning since the demise of the glory days of IMSA GTP and...

Here's a couple video clips that "Sassy", the owner of the IMSA-styled SA22C RX7 sent to us.

Besides the sights and sounds of the RX7, you can also catch a glimpse of many other Japanese classics running on the famous Suzuka Circuit.

Thanks a lot, Sassy!

Back in January when we did Mazda month, we ran a spotlight on this IMSA-styled SA22C RX7 out of Japan. At the time the car was done in semi-gloss black, but it's since been repainted in a glossy red. The guys from the 22C Works website sent us some photos of the remade car, and we knew for sure you guys would want to see them....

A couple weeks ago when I was at the Japanese Classic Car Show in Irvine, parked alongside the classic RX7's in Mazda's display I spotted this wild-looking MX-6. The normal MX-6 was a front wheel drive coupe that shared a platform with the Ford Probe, but the IMSA GTU race version was a just a bit different....

I'm sure most of you guys are aware of the short but fruitful linkup between BMW and McLaren that produced the F1 Supercar, but this was not the first time these two companies worked together. Back in the 1970s McLaren had an American based racing team that was used for its Indianapolis campaigns. It was this team which BMW charged with running its IMSA Camel GT campaigns for the '77, '78 and '79 racing seasons. And this was the tool: the E21 BMW 320 Turbo IMSA racer. A car which...

Regular Speedhunters photo contributor, and SpeedTV.com Auto Racing editor, Marshall Pruett has been working on an excellent new website, grandtouringprototype.com , which showcases the IMSA GTP Series, a golden era in North American Sports car racing. The predecessor to the current American Le Mans Series. The site now has more than 50 hours of video, in conjunction with IMSA/ALMS, from old telecasts from years gone by. It is an amazing Aladdin’s cave for anyone into Sportscar racing. Also...

Most of us have some place of work we need to be at every single day of the week. This daily ritual normally involves some kind of commute through automotive or human traffic, a life at a business with your co-workers, eating similar kinds of food at familar places and then another commute through the hordes to your chosen place of residence. For most people, this pattern is relatively unchanging from month to month, year to year. I personally find it a bit of a challenge to maintain a zest for life...

I know, I know.... I'm a bit obsessed with Porsche 935s and will find any excuse to write about them. To me, an 800 bhp GT car is something worth talking about... but if you consider 1999 to be ancient history, then perhaps it's best to look away now.

I just found this fantastic ten minute clip on Youtube which shows some high-quality filmed footage from Sebring '82. This was probably the last year that GT cars were at the forefront of American Endurance racing before Prototypes locked out the front of the grids. It's too bad, as for me, it was a magic formula, to allow GTs to race against Prototypes for overall victory. Perhaps we should lobby Le Mans to adopt Super GT rules? Think they would go for that?

Rounding out Toyota month on Speedhunters, I'd like to post about some of the most successful Toyotas ever raced in North America. My fascination with these cars first started when I got a book called Dan Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars by David Bull Publishing as a gift for my birthday last fall, and ever since then, Dan Gurney has been one of my heroes. ...

Over the past few days, I've been finishing up our Mazda-themed editorials with photos from the race car dungeon underneath the Mazda R&D facility. The main reason I wanted to go to the facility in the first place was to shoot this particular car. As pretty much everyone who has read Speedhunters can tell, I'm a die hard Toyota enthusiast. However, I do hold RX7s in high regard. I just love the design and historic lineage of the cars - it's really something I could get into if I still...

Not too long ago Golf came out with a prototype called the Golf GTI W12, it featured a twelve cylinder six liter engine with 650bhp capable of 325km/h. But long before that, a Swedish tuner called Dahlback made something even more spectacular. Their basis was a Golf Mk4 which they completely stripped so they could start with a blank canvas. The car started life in 1998 and has progressed ever since. Let's start at the most obvious, the exterior. Dahlback went to VW motorsport for a complete widebody...

When I was in my teens, every year I'd look forward to the six hour drive from Vancouver to Oregon, to watch the G.I. Joes Grand Prix at Portland International Raceway. It was an amazing time for sports car racing in America, with factory entries from Jaguar, Nissan, Toyota, and Ford as well as a host of privateer Porsches. In the support role to the big prototypes were the GTs, which amazingly enough, had enough numbers to run in a totally separate race. The main players back then were the AAR...

OK, so perhaps the title of this post is a bit misleading. I was only five years old when Riverside International Raceway closed for good in 1989, but after reading through Frank Sheffield's website about the track, it almost feels like I was there. Frank used to work at the track and he has put together a very thorough site that chronicles the track and its history. Since October is Socal month on Speedhunters, it is the perfect time for a little look back at one of the Southern California's most historic car spots. When I asked Frank if we could use some of his gathered material for this story, he said that in his view every bit of motorsport history should belong to everyone. With that said, let's take a look back at RIR....

As the Porsche Feature month draws to an end, I thought it would be a good idea to show some of the iconic liveries which have graced racing Porsche's over the decades. Our first example is a group shot of the Porsche 956/962 from the Rennsport Reunion back in 2007. Seems an awesome event. The Porsche 956 and 962 dominated endurance racing around the world. The 956 made its competition debut in 1982 (the car with 'ROTHMANS' in Capitals is one of the first chassis). The 962 was an updated...
