After getting back to Japan at the end of last month I had to spend some time organizing and backing up my picture library. Like every time I do this kind of thing, I unavoidably start looking through old galleries which is where I stumbled upon this snap I took in LA a few years ago. The car is owned by a friend of mine, a true enthusiast that takes his passion to extremes by exercising great care in modifying all of his cars with a very authentic JDM feel. It rides on white 18-inch Yokohama Advan...

For my next post I'm going to show you a selection of AWD cars from Need for Speed SHIFT. As I know you guys get annoyed and hot-under-the-collar whenever any subject matter gets overplayed on Speedhunters, so I'll start to wrap things up with a wider selection of cars from the game. So let's look first at the R34. As you upgrade the Skyline, it first changes into a bit of a Time Attack style monster before becoming a low line JGTC style racer. Running around 500 hp, it differs from a...

I wasn't sure which side I wanted to show guys, the front or the back. I ended up choosing the front because the visual impact was greater. This thing has to be one of the hottest looking Impreza's out there. It is rocking wheels that measure 18"x10 +1 on the rear and 18"x10 +5 in the front. For more amazing pictures of this car you can log onto the owners thread on NASIOC . -Jeroen Willemsen First spotted on Hellaflush

This month has gone by fast hasn't it? I'm finding it hard to believe that we've got just over a week left before AWD month is going to be over. I've had the fortune of attending numerous track events here in the USA and in Japan, so I thought I'd post a gallery of some of the most memorable Evo and Impreza time attack cars I've seen over the past couple years.
Some of these cars are very well known, and some of them might not be - but all have left a lasting impression on me in some way or another....

One of the things I regret from my time in Japan is never getting the chance to go to a Super Taikyu race. Super Taikyu might not be as glamorous as Super GT and its OEM participation, but I love the fact that Super Taikyu cars strongly resemble their street-going counterparts. The current Super Taikyu roster consists of Civics, Integras, Z's, BMW's, and others which are divided into separate classes. AWD cars are also represented well in Super Taikyu with a number of Evos and a single Impreza that run in the ST-2 class. Here are a few photos, found in Car@Nifty's coverage of the '09 Super Taikyu season....

A couple weeks ago I headed down to beautiful Oceanside, California to visit what might be the best known Subaru tuning shop in North America - Crawford Performance. Not only is Crawford big among Subaru enthusiasts around the world, but millions of people have been exposed to their car building work following the Ken Block Gymkhana videos. The story behind the company and what they do is an interesting one, but I'll save that for the next post. For now let's focus on Crawford's unlimited class time attack car. Known as "Tony the Tiger" because of its orange and black livery, this 2008 STI is said to be the fastest new body style Impreza in the world. ...

The "Darkcore" Impreza that Rod posted yesterday generated a lot of response from you guys, so here's a few more photos and some info on it. The car is owned by Bill Vitale from Pennsylvania, and has got to be one of the most well-balanced and attractive privately owned STI's that I've ever seen. Like most projects, it's gone through a number of stages before becoming the car you see above....

The time attack scene here in the United States is dominated primarily by two cars, the Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Evolution. Walking through the paddock at one of these events, there will be so many Evos and Imprezas around that it's hard to keep track of all them. In the iconic film Two Lane Blacktop, James Taylor's character says "They all get to lookin' the same. They perform about the same too...". James was of course referring to the Detroit muscle cars of the early '70s, but the same can be said about the AWD rockets from Japan. One of the cars that's stuck out to me at time attack events is the Harman Motive Impreza - a car that's been dominant in the Modified class of the Redline Time Attack series and other US track events. Last week I headed down to Harman Motive's shop in Torrance, CA to have a closer look at this car....

Most people would say that the biggest benefit of an all-wheel-drive layout is copious amounts of grip. For years, AWD cars and their grip have proven themselves on race tracks and roads all over the world. You'd expect the precise grip that AWD delivers would have no place in the unusual world drifting, and for the most part that's true. However, cars that were once AWD have become rather popular among drifters around the world. Even if you take the AWD out of the equation, cars like the Evolution and Impreza still offer lots of horsepower, a stiff chassis, and well-designed suspension that can be appreciated by anyone, even drifting goons. Since we can never go too long without running a drifting story on Speedhunters, here's a look at some of the AWD-based drift cars that have popped up over the years....

The icon flashing was the first warning...........mail received.............from the Sainted Editor while on his Japanese trip.............Get down to Brands Hatch on Sunday...........Time Attack and do a feature on the ZEN Performance Subaru.............so knowing nothing about the sport or its competitors I steered my old jalopy round the M25 and in through the gates of the famous Kent race circuit. After wondering about trying to size up the event (more later) I slid on down to the pitlane and...

Last weekend, the Redline Time Attack series headed out to the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Illinois for their third event of 2009. A country club with a race track? If only we had something like that here on the west coast...
Thanks to Rich over at AMS Performance (located in nearby West Chicago), we have a few photos from the Redline event to share with you guys. ...

Sunshine welcomed the drivers of the Time Attack championship to Scotland for round 2, 2008 champion and lap record holder Olly Clark looked fast in the Roger Clarke motorsport Impreza but after practice was back in 4th place a second off his 2008 lap record time of 52.186 seconds. Round 1 winner Chris Ward couldn't make round 2 so RSE motorsport had employed the services of formula Ford driver Rory Butcher to take the helm of the 700hp evo VIII, this seemed to be paying off as Butcher and the...

The weather forecasts called for some morning showers. But that did not deter the throngs of people that attended D1GP in Anahiem, California. They were in for a treat with the clash between the up-and-coming American drivers and the solid and well known Japanese D1 drivers. I'm sure, in the back of everyone's mind, that the winner of the day would be a Japanese driver. But who would've known that it was to be Daigo Saito in his Toyota Chaser! Here is the shot of the final two warriors...

We haven't seen a lot of rally photo's lately, so I thought I would share this flying Subaru with you guys taken by Fred van Ommeren . The photo was taken at a rally stage in Almere Holland. This is not your typical rally with gravel and dirt. The stage is being held around a industrial area with paved streets. For more spectacular shot and when you like rally cars I suggest you take a look at autofotografie .nl -Jeroen Willemsen

If there is something I really like about the Hyper Meeting it has to be the mix of race cars the organizers throw into the event. As an opening shot I chose this action snap of the Super Taikyu (ST) Team Endless EvoX, flying past me just before the main in-field hairpin. ST regulations dictate that the cars need to stay in a pretty "stock" state of tune, so it's all about fine tuning. The Evo's chassis is stiffened up with a beefy looking roll-cage, while the interior is all stripped...

The 2009 Hyper Meeting in Tsukuba turned out to be a very reassuring event for the whole tuning industry surrounding Evos, Imprezas and the odd Legacy. Compared to last year's event the uncertainty with the new Impreza and Lancer has all but disappeared thanks to tons of new products having been developed. You can now find all sorts of new bits and pieces to spice up the exterior, while on the engine front things have taken a huge leap. This however doesn't mean that older cars have been...

Just got back from the 2009 Hyper Meeting in Tsukuba and what a day packed full of action it was. For now a little preview will have to do as I'm dead tired, sunburnt and sleep deprived! The Subaru and Mitsubishi guys were all out in full force embracing the latest generation Impreza and Lancer Evolution. Action on track was almost non-stop, with some new and old demo cars battling it out. Plenty of exhibitions were put on to keep the crowds entertained with some very interesting cars. The turn...

I have just a couple posts of Auto Salon coverage left, and this time I'll be taking a quick look at the Subaru presence at this year's show. The new body style GRB Impreza was the most popular by far, but there were a few GDB's and other Subaru models out there. This two-door GDB built by a Tochigi-based Subaru tuning shop called Mature was one of the cars that caught my eye this year. ...

Hey kids! Early Christmas present... You can now find Tarzan's Time Attack Impreza in our desktops section . And just because I know some of you may want them, sorry, I don't have any high res John Brooks photos of this car. Hit up John or Rod for that! Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah... (BTW I love Adam Sandler's brilliant SNL rendition of the Hannukah song... who agrees with me on this? If you don't know, google it.) -Antonio Alvendia
