Can you imagine what qualities were needed to be THE top racing driver of the 60s. Big hair, wolfish smile, Mediterranean suntan, hairy chest on display, dolly birds on either arm............in other words a regular Carlos Fandango and yet it was much simpler than that..........all you really needed was a Scottish accent and a wee bit o' tartan. Jim Clark was acknowledged by all his contemporaries to be the best during his reign in Formula One, he was the leader of the pack, absolutely no doubt...

Last year in Japan I came across a Lotus Europa with a rotary swap, but that car is nothing compared to this project that Amemiya-san built back in the 1980's. With a tuned 13B making just under 280ps, this hybrid Lotus was able to reach 282km/h on the famous Yatabe Test Course. During this bygone era, the growing Japanese tuning industry was focused almost entirely on 0-400m acceleration and top speed runs on the now-demolished oval course in Ibaraki Prefecture. ...

Yes that's right Formula One and AWD! The combination of motorsport and power to all four wheels did not start with the Audi Quattro, neither did it start with the the Lotus 63 that you see above. Actually back in 1902 Spyker built an all wheel drive machine that won a hill climb. Then fast forward to 1961 and the Ferguson P99, which was built by tractor magnate Harry Ferguson to showcase his new AWD technology. The P99 even had an early Dunlop ABS system and in the hands of Sir Stirling Moss...

I've always liked Lotus. Must be something to do with the fact I have a British Passport! LOL OK, a little bit of trivia. Without using Google, what is the connection with this Lotus Esprit X180 and Toyota month, here on Speedhunters.... I'll check in later. -Andy Blackmore

Regular Speedhunters may remember my post on the 2008 Porsche Calendar, back in September, the post proved very popular with requests to know when the 2009 edition was available. Surfing around today, I discovered that Lotus and Porsche have released design calendars with renders and illustrations from their respective design studios. The Lotus Calendar is a past favourite of mine. The 2009 calendar features 15 pages of development sketches, scale model photographs and digital sketches of Lotus Products...

Last weekend when I was checking out the rotary meeting at Fuji Speedway, I spotted a car that stuck out like a sore thumb among the sea of FD's and sprinkling of RX8's. As I got closer, my suspicions came true. It was a Lotus Europa that came to Fuji Speedway from Yokohama. Considering the company the car was in, I wasn't terribly surprised when I looked at the engine compartment and found a Mazda rotary sitting where the old four cylinder used to be. Now it's not uncommon to see rotary swaps in cars like the AE86 or Nissan/Datsun 510, but seeing one in a rare European sports car like the Europa was pretty crazy!...

The UK Time Attack series wrapped up its eventful 2008 season this past weekend at Snetterton Race Circuit and the event would determine the final season standings. In what was seemingly typical UK weather, the day got started under foggy, damp conditions but by the end the event day it appears that conditions were pretty pleasant. Lee Chung was there shooting the event and he has again allowed us to use his photos to share some of the action. Judging by this opening shot, I'd say that Snetterton looks like a pretty scenic course, and a great setting for some fall time time attack action....

I know the Lotus Elise as a lightweight car that is very competitive on the circuit when pushed hard. I see them quite often because they are very popular and you get a lot of bang for the buck. Most of the cars are left standard and are driven by guys who are in their mid-life crisis, at least in Holland. But luckily for us there are exceptions because some people add some Japanese flavor to the mix. This Elise is rocking some insane cool looking Work Meisters with a perfect fitment. The carbon...

My first taste of Time Attack in the UK came last weekend when the circus came to the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit. I have already featured the Zen Performance Impreza on SpeedHunters but the Sainted Editor, still in steamy Japan, requested a gallery feature on the Pro Class event. So it would seem appropriate to start with the car that ran a consistent second to the Zen effort, the Lotus Elise of Steve Guglielmi which turned in a time only 3/10ths shy of the record breaking Impreza....

The London Motor Show kicks off this week and a number of debuts are planned. Although a shadow of its former self, the show is still important due to the large number of cars sold in the UK. Honda OSM Concept Honda say its just a concept, but this 'low-emission' roadster is S2000 size. Much nicer in form than many recent Honda designs. For a concept, its very well resolved and almost ready for Production. It reminds me of the Lotus Elan from 1989. Most obvious if you compare the image above...

...Well maybe but so it would also appear is the appeal of James Bond or 007 as he is known in the trade. This year sees the centenary of the birth of Ian Fleming, author of the original books and ex-naval intelligence officer, and to celebrate this there was a small exhibition on the lawn of Goodwood House amongst the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours d’Elegance. Of course Fleming did not only write the series of Bond books but also Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Sadly at Goodwood there was no sign...

This is the first image of the forthcoming Lotus Eagle. The car has been testing for months, but with heavy disguise, it was hard to tell what it really looked like. The car will debut later this month at the London Motor Show. This is the first of three new models, Lotus will introduce over the next three years. The car is a 2+2 mid engined rear wheel drive layout, using a 3.5 Litre Toyota VVTi V6 engine. The internal codename is 'Eagle' but we do not know if this will be the final production...

If you read my previous story on my experience visiting the legendary Donington Park Grand Prix Collection, and being enamored mostly by the vintage F1 and Grand Prix wheels, then you already know I have some mental issues. However, there were soooo many amazing things to look at in the museum, we couldn't just stop it there; we thought it would be only fitting to show you some scenes from the halls at Donington, so you could get a scope of how massive a collection this was. I mean, some of these...
