Today Mad Mike Whiddett and 9 top level D1NZ drivers cruised the streets of Auckland, NZ to raise funds for a good cause. Local New Zealand drift fan, Daniel Baxter was diagnosed with cancer last year but with the help of the D1NZ crew, drivers and New Zealand Police, he was given something sure to bring some happiness, in what can only be described as a very difficult time for him and his family. Daniel rode shotgun in one of the police cars, leading the convoy while the passenger seats in the drift...

Our final part of show coverage from the 4 & Rotary Nationals 2012 looks at one of the largest categories from the show: the rotaries! I'll also cover off the American classics and the few European cars that attended in this article too....

After a nice selection of GT-Rs in the previous post let's take a look at the rotaries that were present at the show. A lot of these cars we all know well and have seen before, others like the RE-Amemiya Super NA7 were quite the surprises... ...much like Mad Mike's FD at the Rays booth. I found one of my favorite RX-7s on the little cornered off RH9 part of the show, the RE-Wing FD which was recently blasting around Tsukuba at the Super Battle event in December. What makes this car special...

Mad Mike Whiddett today announced that he will be competing in the 2012 D1GP championship in Japan. And, as you might have guessed, he'll be behind the wheel of a quad rotor RX-7. However as this teaser photo shows, it's a different car to the 'MADBUL' FD RX-7 that was nominated as the 2011 Speedhunters Car of the Year. Dubbed the 'JAPBUL', the D1GP RX-7 was built by Magic Co in Japan, and is set to debut at the Odaiba round on April 14. - Charles Kha Mad Mike Whiddett's...

Yo Sup Speedhunters! After our team shakedown test with the rebuilt MADBUL I’m now stoked to bring you this blog from my experience at the 2011 WTAC at Eastern Creek in Sydney, Australia. Firstly, I want to say a MASSIVE thanks to all my supporters in Australia that managed to make their way to the event. I had no idea and was shocked to see how many supporters I have in Oz. It was great to have the 4rotor there. Mazda Rotangs have a huge following in both New Zealand and Australia and both...

This spectacular shot was snapped not long ago by Downshift 's Andrew Foy. During a demo run to entertain the crowds at WTAC, Mad Mike suffered a diff failure, which made the RX-7 a rather spectacular flame thrower. Thanks for the awesome photo Andrew! Photo by Andrew Foy Downshift

Mad Mike has been hard at work with his FD RX-7. It's gone through a complete redo from the ground up from the inside and out and is currently on a container heading for Australia for the International Drift Championship which runs in conjunction with the World Time Attack. Which takes place at Eastern Creek in Sydney, Australia. The MADBUL is now capable of backwards entries! Check out the video to see, and hear it in action. -Linhbergh

The Red Bull World Drift Championship, in 2008, was a real eye opener for me personally. Us kiwi boys were still newbies to the world of drift. Our drift development has not evolved past a few adjustments to steering lock, the odd hydraulic hand brake and of course suspension wound to the floor! We were still lost in the smoke, fun and fascination that drifting brought with it. I remember walking through the paddock and seeing the cars our RX7 was up against. After that trip, I knew we needed to...

The folk over at WTAC and Hoon Media sent through this great video of Mad Mike, sliding his way around the Hamilton V8 Supercar track. The beauty of this video is that you get to enjoy the sheer, unadulterated sound of that quad rotor!

Mad Mike will be bringing his RX-7 to Australian shores for the International Drift Challenge, which will run in conjunction with this year's World Time Attack Challenge.

Sup all Speedhunters! A lot of gamers and fans are anticipating the release of SHIFT2 UNLEASHED at the end of this month and I sure as hell am hanging out for it too! Rod Chong has sent over a few teaser pics of my BADBUL NFS/Red Bull RX8 from in game and I couldn't wait to share them with you all! One of the things that always annoyed me with games was you could never get the car's to sit just right (if you're into the same style as myself) , one of my main concerns was replicating the...

Hey Speedhunters worldwide! Here is my rundown on the Final Round of Formula Drift. I apologies for the delay as I have been busy here in NZ with our prep and Round one of D1NZ. The course here at Irwindale has been a favourite of mine since I competed here at the D1GP World Allstars in 2007. That was the first and only time I had been on this course and that was in my FD RX7 with a menacing naturally aspirated 3 rotor PP and with a factory 5 speed gearbox. That one event cemented my name in the...

Our normal play-by-play Speedhunter at all Formula Drift events is Mike Garrett. He's made an art form out of posting up-to-the-minute reports straight from the track. This time, our dear artist-in-residence-as-photographer Linhbergh is filling in... we'll see how well he does! So who to fill in for Linhbergh then? Well who could be better than mister Driftfotos himself, Larry Chen. He's kindly just given us this desktop image from today's qualifying session. Enjoy!

It was quite the cultural shock driving straight from the remote alien planet of Bonneville to the bright lights of Sin City, Las Vegas, while breathing in tire smoke. Shocking, but worth every last rubbery booger that comes out at the end of the event.... Head on over to the desktops section to grab these two shots from last nights qualifting session. Be sure to tune into the DriftStream to watch today's 32 competition! -Linhbergh

Speedhunters reader and Mad Mike fan Heri sent us this picture of his RC replica of the Bad Bul. Based on a TA05 with a Square drift conversion, Heri outfitted the car Speedway Pal wheels, a custom interior, and custom Red Bull graphics. Great work Heri! Hopefully we'll see a replica of the Team NFS version next! -Mike Garrett...

Team Need For Speed - Drift is comprised of Formula Drift drivers: Mad Mike Whiddett and Matt Powers. The two drivers bring a unique perspective on professional drifting and equally unique drift machines. Mike's performance at the Red Bull World Drifting Championships caught my attention as a filmmaker; the note of the quad rotor Mad Bull Mazda FD RX7 is one I won't soon forget. Matt's fourth place finish at Formula D Irwindale 2009 also comes to mind - as I watched him transform from...

Oregon and Washington are beautiful states and a lot like New Zealand: green, fresh, a lot hotter and with Bears! In Oregon I learned that it is illegal to pump your own fuel and that the kiwi accent pronunciation for “diesel” sounds like “regular.” Which resulted in gallons of “regular” pumped into my diesel truck. So anyway, we finally arrived to Evergreen to find a lot of the other teams were already set up and immediately unpacked the BMX bikes to take a quick...

Sup my Speedhunters followers! After solid testing during the week with the car running at its best this season this was set to be my best performance yet. I snapped an axle on the Wednesday test day which meant I sat Thursday out while the team pieced BADBUL back together. After Formula D Atlanta we hauled our rig up to Pennsylvania to RT Tuning, a performance car outfit based in Reading, PA. This is where I stored our unit until Round 3 in New Jersey to save the 6000mile drive to LA and back. Vince and Matt Petty of RT Tuning were talking about a grassroots drift event they run each year at Englishtown, New Jersey. East Coast Bash as they called it and it was happening the weekend before Formula D. This was something I really wanted to take part in! I planned my flights...

Sup Speedhunters, Back in Auckland, NZ, I did a drift demo at the Skycity Casino for the release of WRC NZ in MADBUL our 4rotor FD RX7. It was an honor to meet fellow Redbull athlete Sebastien Loeb and hear of his respect for drifting. An hour later and we were at the airport. Then after the 13hour flight to LAX we went straight to Twins Turbo Motorsport to be welcomed by the team. They had made a few changes, were prepping the RX8 over the last 2 weeks for Atlanta and getting it ready for re-tech...
