I'm a rather big fan of food--any type food really. I'll eat anything if it's in front of me, but when I'm confronted with a dish and I have no idea what to expect, things can go either of two ways: this plate of food can be life-changingly delicious, or Mr. Toilet and I will get to know each other very intimately for the next couple of hours. As we close this month's Misfits and Maverick's theme, we'll take a look at a car that doesn't quite fit in any given category...

A car like this could be considered as a misfit or maverick. Norris Designs are responsible for this creation, a short wheelbase EVO 9. There are so many trick parts on this car but I'll start with the engine. It is powered by a 2.24L long rod high deck engine, it delivers 950bhp and 700lb-ft. Thanks to its low weight of 1180kg the car is capable to go 215mph and does the quarter mile in 9.26 seconds. You can check out the complete spec list on Norris Designs . But it is not the engine that makes...

As enthusiasts, we personify cars as much as we can. Some of us give our cars names. A great many of us lust after cars like we would lust after a beautiful woman. We some all somehow make an emotional connection to these lumps of steel, aluminum, plastic and rubber as we would a best friend or even a lover. Certain cars make us laugh, others are serious businessmen, and others are like that decades old friend that is always there for you. I think its pretty safe to say that we are all guilty of...

While I have your attention, with my recent feature on the Ferrambo, I'm also going to take you for a quick tour of the shop which built this oddball contraption: Divers Street Rods. Although these photos were shot last summer, I'm sure you'll find it interesting to see what wild creations Divers will be unleashing into the hot rod show car world in the next year or so. Most race shops and car builders operate out of anonymous industrial estates, but not so with Divers Street Rods. Their...

Let's imagine we've just set eyes on this little red wagon/estate for the first time. At a quick glance, it looks like some kind of vintage Ferrari machine. Perhaps the wheels are too large and the stance too low for it to be 100% original, but it does have a pure classic style going. Did Ferrari make a 250 GT Lusso station wagon/estate in the early 1960s? This little red wagon certainly gives that impression. Looking inside the car, we see it carries an Italian theme across. The tan leather...

If there is a will, there is a way. The Team Takeuchi Lexus IS you see here is quite an interesting car, it was created out of need, and as we will see shares very little with the Lexus IS you and I know. The project was handled by Shift Racing , a highly technological outfit that for years has been building cars that participate in Super GT, Super Taikyu and the Japan Porsche Cup. With the phasing out of the little MR-S, used by some teams up until 2008, Shift knew that they needed to look to the...

If you hear the name "Barris" , you'll likely picture the wild Hollywood customs built by George Barris - cars like the original Batmobile, and Drag-u-la from the Munsters TV show. Although not as well known as his younger brother, Sam Barris made perhaps an even bigger contribution to the history of custom car building, pioneering the art of the chop top, among other things....

Last month I took a quick trip to Los Angeles in order to attend the Mooneyes Xmas Party. I knew this was a chance to see the burgeoning traditional rod and custom scene up close and personal for the first time. I also wanted to try to find a LA based hot rod shop to shoot, so dropped an email to the director of the NHRA museum, Tony Thacker. He recommended that I visit the Walden Speed Shop in Pomona; an outfit known for their expert metalwork and traditional styles. ...

Hot rodding and custom car building has always been one of the best mediums for personal expression. Whether it's a bold new way of pulling that extra MPH on the salt flats, or a technique that simply adds a unique look to a car, the world of hot rods and customs if full of self-styled artists. Of all these people, few are more well known than Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. From his pinstriping to his show car builds to his famous weirdo characters, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth was a man who embodies the creative spirit of hot rod and custom car building, and he's considered by many to be the father of "kustom kulture"....

Well here’s my first blog on Speedhunters. Our beloved CRX was just inducted into the NHRA museum and it is quite an honor. Thank you to Tony Thacker and the NHRA for recognizing our efforts in Sport Compact Drag Racing. Tony Thacker created a display in the west wing of the museum entitled “The Two Brothers Exhibit”. There is another two-brother racecar right next to the CRX from the 40’s and 50’s that did innovative things with a racecar in the salt-flats....

How could Misfits and Mavericks month be complete without something on Keisuke Hatakeyama, the god of FF drifting. Here's the famous Option video clip where he shows the setup on his EF Civic and demonstrates his technique.

Does anyone remember when he ran in the states at the Falken Drift Showoff events?

Everybody knows that drifting is not all about going sideways, there is also a element of being different. Remember the Samurai drifter? Or Paul Vlasblom and his BMW touring. But when I got an email with this picture attached, I didn't realized at first this was a drift car. So it certainly is different but can it drift? . The base car is 1940 Chevy Coupe, the owner Karl Ebel bought it 10 years ago. The plan was to build it as a traditional hot rod but after Karl became more involved in Motorsport...

Since our theme this month is misfits and mavericks, I figured I'd quickly post about a car that played an important role in my teenage years - a '72 Ford Pinto. Yep, a Ford Pinto , the car that's infamous for erupting into a ball of fire with a slight tap of the rear bumper. While this hot rodded Pinto was about as shoddy as it gets, it's turbocharged engine swap also made it one of the funnest cars ever....

It's not too often that we post cars from Ebay here, but I'm going to make an exception. The other day my dad and I were checking out some of the old station wagons up for sale on the site when we came across this '65 Plymouth Belvedere Wagon gasser. The moment I saw the car, I knew I had to share it here. A gasser station wagon? It's hard to get any more maverick or misfit than that!...

Despite its size, this Fiat 500 drag car is capable of putting some serious rubber on the strip. Not sure what engine is in there but I have seen some before with 427 small blocks for power. -Jeroen Willemsen

Euro flavour and supercar style may well be what automotive modification dreams are made of - but a 360bhp Volvo S60 for half the price? Well that's just pure final fantasy. SCREAMING around bends and ripping across high-speed sweepers are all part of the fun before wide-open throttle down The Green Hell's Antoniusbuche straight, but when an engine goes pop there's the ensuing urgency for many to get their motors 'back on track' fast. When 29-year-old Belgian Koen Lauwereys had...

The Volkswagen Beetle is anything but a misfit or maverick. In fact. it's more automotive phenomenon than automotive misfit. This particular Beetle though, is built and driven in a way that makes it as unique as any car out there. We're talking high horsepower, dialed-in suspension, wide wheels, and an overall vibe you'd expect from a Porsche 911 and not from an aircooled Beetle....

It turns out that my visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum happened at a good time. One of the special exhibits running at the museum right now is called "What Were They Thinking? The Misfits of Motordom", and covers both production and prototype vehicles with abnormal engineering, and cars that just didn't "work" at the time they were introduced. Some of the vehicles on display are well known sales flops, while others are bold designs that never made it past the prototype stage....

If there is one tuning shop in Japan that is well worth a look during this month's Misfits & Mavericks theme it has to be Weld . A lot of people make the mistake of classifying it as just a regular tuner, but I've always thought Johnny at Weld does things differently. He has vision and he's never afraid to push boundaries when it comes to building cars. I shot his JZX100 demonstration car before it got its updated 2009 D1 graphics so that is why it may look different in these pictures...

Some of you guys requested some Mitsubishi Starion content this month, so here you go. I'm not exactly sure if you could call the Starion a misfit or a maverick, but it's certainly a rare bird compared to some of the other Japanese sports cars of the time. Seeing these cars will always remind me of a project car that a Mopar magazine a long time ago, stuffing a 340 small block V8 into a Chrysler Conquest, a USDM version of the car. This immaculate Starion GSR-VR sitting on Work Equips was found on Minkara. -Mike Garrett...
