Die Casts are dangerous. Very Dangerous. Be warned. Once you start a die cast habit it's almost impossible to stop. My first Die Cast was a 1/18 scale Mercedes CLK-GTR from the 1997 FIA GT series which I purchased in the late 1990s. At the time I was thinking to collect every single GT1 spec car from 1996 through to the demise of the formula in 1998-9, however 1/18 models take up a lot of room so I quickly gave up on the idea. Instead, I decided to concentrate on collecting 1/43 scale Group 5...

Recently Lexus announced that they had broken the production car lap record around the daunting Nordschleife circuit and today they've released a video backing up their claim. The LFA Nurburgring Edition - of which only 50 will be made - lapped the Green Hell is an astounding 7:14.64.

It's been an eventful couple of weeks, to say the least. In the time between my first blog and now, I've celebrated my 27th birthday, flown to Norway for the craziness of Gatebil, and made my way back home to good ole' San Francisco. Yet, no matter how much time has passed, NOTHING can dim the memories from my experience in Germany at the infamous Nürburgring. So, as promised, I'm back to share with you the 24 hours in which I was fortunate enough to witness the most intense...

While the ADAC 2011 Nürburgring 24 Hours may not have brought Team Need for Speed the results it desired, it was still a classic race which highlighted why this event is so special and unique. Over 200 cars took to the track at 4pm on Saturday June 25th, from full GT2 cars to near showroom spec road legal racers on road tyres. 24 Hours later and Manthey Racing took the flag with their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, five wins out of six. Manthey took the unusual step of fielding two cars for its drivers...

It was to become a frustrating morning for Team Need for Speed Schubert Motorsport as the remaining two cars also succumb to the Green Hell. With the #76 car stuck out on the circuit, Team Need for Speed had to regroup and focus on the other cars, the #4 Need for Speed/Dunlop sponsored car and #77 'Norweigan'car. The rescue crews eventually brought the #76 car back to the Schubert pit and it was a sorry state. The team immediately started removing parts as the chassis has to be repaired,...

Its my turn for a Behind the Scenes feature and I thought I would share with you the madness of the pit lane! It is my first time at the race and previously and simply wasn’t prepared for how busy and tight the pit lane and paddock are. Each garage houses around 6 cars each, all tightly packed with little room for the mechanics to work. To put this into some perspective, in my previous life, I use to help lay out the pit garages for the McLaren Formula One team. Each F1 team would be given...

It has been a busy couple of days for us at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. For us we're busy bringing you the coverage as soon as possible, while the teams have been flat out preparing for qualifying. This is my first visit to the Green Hell and it is just an amazing place. The teams were first let loose on the circuit on Thursday morning before first qualifying yesterday evening. That session ran into the night which allowed the teams to sort out setups as the temperatures dropped. Every...

I was casually browsing the interwebs earlier when I came across news that Renault has claimed a new lap record for a production specification FWD car around the Nordschleife. A lap time of 8:07.79 was more than good enough to beat the record which, incidentally, they already held. The car used was the new Renault Sport Megane 265 Trophy and with just 265BHP on tap, it puts into perspective just how much of an acheivment this is. This 'grocery getter' lapped the infamous circuit quicker than a host of other so-called supercars ...

The crew over at Falken Europe sent us this onboard video taken at the Nurburgring earlier this month. It's a cool video that shows what a complete opening lap of a VLN race is like. As Falken were using the first race as a test session, their Porsche 911 GT3 R returns to the pits after the first lap to test a different set of tyres. Check it out.

Remember this random snap ? I just came across this picture that shows the front of the car. A lot of custom work has gone into this car and I would love to know more about it. Could anybody point us in the right direction? -Jeroen Willemsen

As with Spa, the Nürburgring is more than just the ribbon of tarmac that winds its way amongst the trees. It's an emotion. A dream. A fear. The modern Grand Prix track, constructed in 1984, was a concession to the safety demands of Formula 1 but still retained an inextricable link to the original Nordschleife: the 14-mile Grüne Hölle. The 'Green Hell'. Although it's always been big in Germany, the 'Ring is now famous again worldwide thanks to the proliferation of...

The amount of Porsches that were present during the Touristenfahrt on Friday was astounding. Especially the 997 model which was very popular both in GT3 and GT2 form. A view at the parking lot shows it was pretty packed. It was all about checking your tire pressures and meeting up with friends. One of my favorite cars was this green Porsche 964. Not sure if it was a real Carrera RS but it looked perfect. The green and the gold from the BBS split rims are a perfect combination. It looked so right...

Yesterday I went to the Nürburgring for another day of motoring mayhem. The sheer number of cars and the diversity is immense. The track opened at around 14:15, but before that it was time for the manufacturers to test their cars. I saw a heavily camouflaged SLS and several Porsches going flat out on the long straight adjacent to the parking lot. But I was there to see what kind of cars were present during this very hot day in the sun. This full on race Porsche made a very distinct burble. You...

Hello again Speedhunters! This is my second blog for the site and it’s all about my weekend at Nürburgring for the sixth round of the FIA GT1 World Championship with the Sumo Power GT team. As we did for the previous round at Spa, Peter Dumbreck and I drove over from the UK, but this time our journey was a little more sensible as I didn’t have to do any filming like last time – and we didn’t have a Nissan GT-R. I have to say that I was pleased to be back at a race meeting...

Just came across this shot taken by Willem De Zeeuw during one of the many ‘touristenfahrten' at the Nürburgring. This reminds that I need to go there next week for some Speedhunting. Anybody else going to the ring next week? -Jeroen Willemsen Spotted on Flickr

There is a new category of features for the SpeedHunters Project, Sequence. Well it did not take long to find one story that would fit while out and about last weekend. The 2010 GT1 World Championship features a Qualifying Race to determine who will lead the pack in the Main Race. There are also points on offer and of course all racing drivers grow horns when they get suited and booted and jump in behind the wheel. The logic runs, if it can be called logic, that the race is won or lost on the first...

Like a scene from a Bond Movie or a stunt that D*ck Dastardly might pull, this is a novel method of keeping another competitor behind. Last weekend's FIA GT1 World Championship round at Nurburgring saw a mid field duel between these modern day Wacky Racers. Enrique Bernoldi in the Vitaphone Maserati MC12 has just been tapped by Richard Westbrook in the Matech Ford GT. So of course he hits the flame thrower button...................... It was a case of "Drat, drat, and double drat!"...

They might not be racing on the full 13-mile Green Hell of the Nordschliefe, but 23 GT1 cars still make a hell of a spectacle around the 'mere' three miles of the GP Strecke. Each time I've arrived at a GT1 event this year I've been more and more excited about the weekend, more in need of another GT1 fix, and this venue suits the cars down to the ground. The track is big and imposing, as expected for a Formula One track, but for all its historical similarity with Spa (just 66 miles...

I dropped by the Nurburgring on a magazine assignment this weekend and shot today's warm up for the Main GT1 race. The evidence of rubber abuse was too good to miss. After a disappointing Qualifying Race Sumo Power will need all their age and guile to pull a result out of the hat. It won't be for the want of trying.

The last round of the FIA World GT1 Championship was at the legendary Spa track in Belgium – we've now moved to the other end of the swathe of forest that runs across eastern Belgium and into western Germany to another classic track: the Nürburgring. The weather at Spa was typically predictable in being unpredictable; here at the Nürburgring I'm already looking back to the rain at Spa and dreaming of rainfall that light. This weekend the extremes are more extreme: biblical...
