The days between Christmas and New Year are always a strange time. In Japan for example, companies have already started shutting down for the big New Year holiday. Here in the US though things are different. For some people it's business as usual. For others it's extra days of vacation. I think most people though aren't quite sure what to do.
If there's one thing this week is good for though, it's reminiscing about the year gone by. Here's the third and final part of my 2011 Photos of the Year....

Nissan Silvia S15, EDC, Modified Live, Cadwell Park, United Kingdom 1/30th, f/9, ISO100, 50mm, Canon EOS 5D MKII & Sigma 50 F1.4 This is looking like one of my last posts of 2011, so apologies if I come over all emotional and reminiscent. It has been another incredible year where I've had the opportunity to shoot some amazing events, meet great people and continue to live my dream. However, it can be a pretty demanding job at times. It might look easy from the outside - at least I thought...

BMW E30 318is, Nürburgring, Germany 2.5s, F/1.6, 24mm, ISO 2500 2011 felt like my fastest year to go by. I wasn't able to Speedhunt as much as I had wanted to, which has given me an idea for my new year's resolutions. If I were to sum up my Speedhunting year 2011, these images would remind me of the highlights. Züridrift S14, Speed Industries Trackday, Anneau du Rhin, France 1/100th, F/2.8, 70mm ISO 450 Touge Automotive announced their support for Team Speed Industries . The decals...

JULY: AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia, Spa, Belgium 1/800th, F/5.6, 600mm, ISO200 Canon EOS 5D/Canon 300mm F/2.8L-IS + 2x Extender Summer break? Not for Speedhunters. May to August is always one of the busiest times in the racing schedule: the meat of the season, where every weekend seems to involve planes, trains and automobiles – lots of automobiles. And that's never a bad thing. For me it mostly meant tracking Team Need For Speed's progress in the second half of their FIA European GT3...

McLaren MP4-12C, Spa 24Hs, Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium Ok chaps, here's the third part to my review of 2011. It's been quite the year for me, with big a relocation from my native Vancouver, Canada to new digs in Stockholm, Sweden. I've now more or less stopped trans-Atlantic travel, with my life more firmly rooted in Europe and all the automotive goodness it has to offer. For this blog post, I'm not going to get as wordy, and will just let the photos do the talking. Alan Sinnott Dirt...

Photos are like memories to me. They may not be the best photographs I've taken, but the story behind them and the memories they evoke are what matter to me. This year I've learned a lot, and I even got a new camera to capture more memories. In this review you'll see all sorts of different photos that range in style from portraits to the one you see above.
Standing on the inside of La Source at Spa is a great experience, you can witness the cars in such close proximity braking hard for the cor...

If I had to single out just one moment to be my favourite of the year, I think this would have to be it. Turn 6 is the fastest corner of Singapore's Formula 1 street course, but being wedged between two skyscrapers means it's too tight to accomodate spectators. Except for a couple of safety marshalls, I was all alone as the cars came straight towards me at 175mph. From this distance you could see the driver's eyes as they turned into the kink. Only a few were brave enough to use DRS in their opening laps. ...

December is, by far, my favourite time of the year, and one of the things I enjoy the most is looking over the Photos of the Year posts put together my fellow Speedhunters. For my first of two parts, I've chosen 15 assorted images from my Japan trip back in April and May. Those of you who have read my work will know that Japan has had a big impact on my life, so it seemed fitting to focus on this small continent first....

One of my favourite things about being a Speedhunter is getting to meet so many awesome people. From drivers, to crews to our loyal fans, everybody I have met over the past year has been great. It's hard to narrow an entire year down to a small selection of moments, but I'll try. So here goes!...

Hello Speedhunters. I hope you're enjoying our Photos of the Year 2011 edition! Like you, I'm finding it quite interesting to look at the various Speedhunters Photographers' take on these series of articles. Whether it's Larry Chen, Jonathan Moore, Ross I'Anson, Linhbergh Nguyen, or Paddy McGrath's images, you can look at each shooter's work and start to see their photo language at play. Why have they chosen the photos? Is it the car? Is it the memory of the moment? Is it the composition of the shot? Or the emotion? Sense of light and style? What are the common elements to each of their shots?
There is no right or wrong answer to any of these questions, but ultimately each team member is trying to create images which in some fashion or another will cause a reaction in you, the viewer. This emotional response is itself an automatic process; in an instant you'll likely have decided if you like, love, hate or are indifferent to a Speedhunters picture....

My 'Photos of the Year' post is a short one this time, as I didn't get the chance to venture out in 2011; mainly due to my 'day job' at Need for Speed. My year started on a big high at the Dubai Autodrome for the 24 hour endurance race. A relatively new event, it came of age in 2011 with Schubert, Black Falcon, AF Corse and Lotus all sending entries....

I feel I need to take a slightly different approach to my Photos of the Year for 2011. The year for me wasn't really spent Speedhunting like it was for many members of the team, 2011 meant a lot of time in front of a computer working hard at trying to make our latest Need For Speed title the best it could be. I suppose you could say this is Speedhunting in a different realm, as my day to day was still all about fast and beautiful machines. I wanted to attend Formula D, SEMA, PRI, and many other...

I've split my photos of the year into two posts. One for photos that I think are visually appealing - but may not tell much of a story - and the other for photos that tell a story but may not have the best composition or technique. This opening shot is one of my favorites from the year. While it may be beautiful, it doesn't tell much of a story. It has a very cartoon-like quality to it from all the different colors. I was honestly just at the right place at the right time when those red and...

Picking up where we left off in part one, our season was now in full swing. From the humble - but rather amazing - Irish Touring Cars one weekend, to the might of the GT1 and GT3 grids the next at Silverstone. Rod had requested that I travel to the UK earlier than previously planned to shoot the NFS Z4 GT3 car for a print feature in Performance BMW magazine. There was quite a lot of red tape involved in arranging this shoot - permission to shoot on the circuit was sought first, followed by arranging the details with the team and organisers and then getting permission from Race Control to allow the car to be towed out of the pitlane in the wrong direction. The cars aren't allowed run after specified times so two of the Schubert crew had to tow the car into position with a quad. The reward for our effort was more than worth it....

Mercury Cougar, BHP SHOW, Kent, UK. When we finished up in part one, we were roughly half way though the season. We now pick up with the amazing Awesomefest. Remo Nieze, Falken E30, Awesomefest, Mallory Park, UK. This image is from the Saturday Morning just as the track opened. I was wandering around feeling sorry for myself (more on that later) Remo was the first out on track and did a few spectacular grip laps before seamlessly switching to 'drift mode' coming through The Devil's Elbow...

Ah yes, the life of a Speedhunter. I can't think of another job in the world where you can be shooting beat up drift cars in the desert one weekend, listening to rockabilly music at a Hot Rod show the next weekend, and on another be rubbing elbows with the wine and cheese crowd in Monterey.
My Speedhunting adventures in 2011 included all of that and more. Here's part two of my look back through the year....

JANUARY: Jaguar XK-R, Dubai Autodrome 1/30th, F/3.5, 24mm, ISO3200 Canon EOS 5D MKII/Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L Sportscars are my personal passion, and 2011 proved to be another great year Speedhunting exotics on the road and tracks around Europe and the Middle East. From the warm sun and balmy desert nights of the Dubai 24 Hours in January to the windy classic coastal track of Zandvoort in Holland in October, putting together these Photos Of The Year stories is an enjoyable reminder of the great events...

Photography is, mostly, a rather geeky affair. We, as photographers, constantly nerd out over numbers. And to those that aren't versed with the language of photography think, we light capturists, are talking in some alien language. Foreign terms like shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and ISO, along with all the numbers associated with those things, make photography seem like scientific process. To a lot of people, if I told someone that I shot a photo with a 135mm with an aperture of F2...

Matt Carter, BHP Show, Lydden Hill, Kent, UK. Well here we are again. Another twelve months gone in what seems like a heartbeat, and it's time to reflect on a year of Speedhunting. My year has been primarily spent in the sometimes surreal world of UK Drifting, and in the next few posts I will show you my favorite shots from the year and try to explain why they are at the top of my pile. 1200HP SVA R34 Skyline, Near Dover, Kent UK. My first shoot of 2011 had nothing at all to do with Drifting...
