I've been working hard on the car in the garage as well as on the computer building up a visual target *that's what we call it in the games biz* for my FC build. I wanted something to be able to show people what this beast is going to look like. Enjoy the teaser! Should have the car really for IPO right around SEMA. - Carl Jarrett

I hope I'm not boring you with these Need for Speed SHIFT stories. Just a few more and regular broadcasting will be resumed ;>.... I'm very excited by the finished game and as I was personally involved in some creative design aspects of the project in its initial stages, I'm enjoying the opportunity to share and discuss the project with you lot. Here's an FD that I just built for myself. This is just one of several body-kit packages that you can purchase on its way to being transformed...

You might remember my blog post in July finding the car to start my newest project, a road race/time attack/hill climb/who knows 1988 Mazda RX7, as promised here's the official part 1 of my EPIC (please note my pretentious and humorous tone here) RX7 race car build! Over my break from work and after my eyes healed up from laser eye surgery I finally had some free time to get started on my new adventure. Step 1 is the messiest and dirtiest but pretty damn fun at times, the tear down... The tear...

As we got ready to start the Speedhunters coverage of Bonneville Speed Week I was silently hoping there was going to be a Japanese campaign at the event. The legendary Japanese tuning shop Jun Auto's Bonneville runs are now the stuff of legends, and I was praying we'd be able to find something similar to document at Speed Week. However, when I looked at the Bonneville entry list there were no Japanese teams listed... the closest thing to an Asian based team was an entry lodged from Singapore...

Here's a great shot of the Dandy RX7 disappearing into the heat haze at Bonneville last week... It looks fantastic as a high rez desktop photograph... BTW The team tells me that the car managed to hit 230 mph on Friday... that's pretty crazy!... You know where to get it yes? :R

After all the stunning coverage we have seen over the last week from Bonneville, I got the itch to post something from Japan that is also related to speed. Enter the Zimax RX-7, a true modern day wangan racer! I first spotted this FD3S at the 2007 "7-7-7" meeting at Daikoku as it rolled in late at night. Among a sea of tuned RX-7s it wasn't the looks that grabbed my attention at first... ...but the sound of the engine. The uneven idle, the clunky gearbox all hinted that this FD was...

We don't tend to focus very much on youtube crash videos here on Speedhunters, but I thought this one would be of interest to you, as we get ready for our Bonneville Speedhunting trip. It depicts the Racing Beat team's ill-fated 1992 attempt at the C/Blown Modified Sports record of 241 mph with their 760 horsepower turbocharged three Rotor FD RX7.

The team returned to The Salt with a repaired car in 1995 and set a new record of 242 mph, making it the world's fastest RX7. It's a record that the team still holds today. Antonio featured this car during our Mazda month earlier in the year if you want more info about it.

I've asked myself this question a few times in the past couple days, 'what have I got myself into?!?' Or, 'I sold my Cobra for this?' You might remember my post from a few weeks ago when I sold my FFR. A little scary to dive into such a big project, but man am I looking forward to it! I picked up an '88 RX-7 the other day for $200, basically bought it for the shell only, as most of the parts aren't pristine, as I'm sure you can tell. The owner had it sitting 20 feet...

July 7th is a rather special day in Japan, if you are into rotaries that is. Every year on this day RX-7 owners flock to the Daikoku Parking Area under the Yokohama Bay Bridge for what has to be one of the biggest car gatherings of the year. Like most meetings of this nature it is all organized and coordinated online via various local clubs scattered around the country. As I arrived just after 6 pm there was already a pretty good number of cars slowly taking over the top part of the massive car park...

Last week I said goodbye to a dear friend, she's gone, thats it, no more.. I spent 3 years of my life building this beast, and drove it for another 2 1/2 years, flogged it on the track a bunch, and generally had a blast, but like all good things, it came to an end. While selling a car is always a tough thing, I did at least get the joy knowing the new owner will take great care of it, and I have never sold anything to anyone so excited in thier life, he's definitely deserving, and I'm...

After checking the RE-Extreme blog I came across this picture. I have seen this same FD numerous times before on pictures when it was going through its paces on Tsukuba, even Mike has captured this car before. I never realized that it was a street legal car. That in itself makes this car even cooler than it already was. Can you imagine driving a car like this to and from Tsukuba on any given Sunday and compete in a Time Attack event? The thought alone... -Jeroen Willemsen

I'll pick up where we left off in the first post , where we were about to embark on an 1,100 mile roundtrip to the UK to compete at the first round of the 2009 JDM Allstars series. We left Ireland on a late sailing and arrived into the UK at around 1a.m. We headed through the night to south west England and to Devon, the home of rotary specialists Dragon Performance. We arrived at around 4a.m. and tried to get an hour or so sleep in the van but instead ended up watching WRC videos on Ffrenchie's...

Up until this year it was always the Japanese that were going overseas to expose the world to their drift culture, but 2009 looks like it will be the year when Japanese drifters and drift fans will finally get a taste of international drifting on their home turf. We already saw Vaughn Gittin Jr. bring his all-American V8-powered madness to Japan earlier this month, and we have just heard that another high profile international drifter will be appearing in the land of the rising sun. New Zealand's...

No particular rhyme or reason for this one, just a clean Ibaraki-based FC3S RX7 I spotted at Tsukuba Circuit a while back. The blue BN Sports-equipped body mixes nicely with the staggered neon yellow Gramlights 57D's, and the owner also get bonus points for street-driving on this stance. -Mike Garrett ...

Over the next few weeks, as everyone anxiously awaits the start of the racing season, lots of car builders from all over are preparing their new cars. While this particular car is not intended for professional drifting use, I thought I'd just show some snaps of this Mazda FC3S truck that's being built at JTP Motorsports, the garage of Formula D FC3S driver Justin Pawlak . While we have shown you other FC3S trucks on Speedhunters previously, this particular FC3S truck is a bit different because...

I don't have much information on this car, but it's a pretty rad looking build for a tin top race car. All the front subframe is aluminum, and it all looks hand fabricated too. Anyone else have any more information on this car? - Carl Jarrett

I find at most big racing events, the bits of car culture you see in the paddock and spectator areas are often just as interesting as the on-track action. It's here that you can get up close with the unique qualities of local automotive scenes. Sometimes when I'm wandering about these spectator areas I'll come across something that I will absolutely HAVE to bring home with me. It may be a book, a sticker, a magazine or just a photo opportunity. Last August, I was at the FIA GT 24 hour...

Over the past few days, I've been finishing up our Mazda-themed editorials with photos from the race car dungeon underneath the Mazda R&D facility. The main reason I wanted to go to the facility in the first place was to shoot this particular car. As pretty much everyone who has read Speedhunters can tell, I'm a die hard Toyota enthusiast. However, I do hold RX7s in high regard. I just love the design and historic lineage of the cars - it's really something I could get into if I still...

I just wanted to post up some quick snaps of this car... when I spotted it, parked quietly in the back corner of the highly restricted access race car dungeon that lies underneath one of Mazda R&D facility, I couldn't quite make out what kind of car this was... however, if you look more closely, examining the hood, the bumper vents, and the roofline, you'll notice that this car is an FC3S RX7 Turbo II. I didn't have much information on this FC, but was told that apparently this car...
