Speedhunters reader and Mad Mike fan Heri sent us this picture of his RC replica of the Bad Bul.
Based on a TA05 with a Square drift conversion, Heri outfitted the car Speedway Pal wheels, a custom interior, and custom Red Bull graphics.
Great work Heri! Hopefully we'll see a replica of the Team NFS version next!

The video does NOT do the sound justice. I literally had goosebumps after hearing this in person for the first time on Saturday!

Hello Speedhunters! It may seem to some of you that things have been quiet in my corner for the last couple of months, however life has been absolutely berserk here for me!!! Firstly I am ecstatic to announce that I will be running a full program in the 2010 Formula D Championship. So without further delay, I am very proud to announce my new team “The Madmike Need for Speed / Redbull / Metal Mulisha crew!” This really is a dream team and I am prepared for both the hard yards and fun times...

The Bergenholtz Racing RX8 is not only getting a new driver for the 2010 Formula Drift season, but a new sponsor and an exterior makeover.
The car was unveiled this morning, as new driver Joon Maeng serenaded the streets of downtown Long Beach to the sounds of race-tuned rotary....

I just got back from the Formula Drift offices in downtown Long Beach where Bergenholtz Racing announced the new driver of their Mazda RX8 for the 2010 Formula Drift season.
I arrived at the office to find some of my fellow media guys anticipating the big news. Who would be replacing Justin Pawlak in the Bergenholtz RX8 this year?

Heading into the final round of the NZ Drift Series I was sitting in 2nd place and there was only 22 points separating me from the championship leader Gaz Whiter. For me to take the title it meant I needed to finish one spot ahead of Gaz and qualify 2 spots ahead to claim the championship. My sights were set high to qualify 1st and finish 1st and I was super confident to make this happen. Pukekohe being my favorite track with the infamous entry "widow maker" sweeper which is a 5th gear full throttle 200+kmh corner! The judges had really asked for carnage when they announced they want us to run a new line, and made it an outside clipping zone around the entire sweeper....

The final round of the NZDrift series was held last weekend at Pukekohe Raceway. After his fourth consecutive 1st place qualifying score, Mad Mike Whiddett came up with a second place finish - more than enough to claim the season championship.
Congrats to Mad Mike and his team!
We look forward to hearing more about this event from him soon.

Only two weeks out from the D1NZ finals, we were scheduled to be at Taupo Motorsport Park for round 3 of the NZDRIFT series. After a 2nd and a 3rd placing at the opening rounds I was ready and confident to stand tall at this round after the changes we had made to the RX8. The car has improved so much in only 4 competitions....

Here's a quick photo that Mad Mike Whiddett just sent over from the third round of the NZ Drift Series at Taupo Motorsport Park. After earning second and third place finishes earlier in the season, Mad Mike defeated Carl Ruiterman this weekend to take his first victory of 2009. So far It's been an exciting for year for Mike, who's been competing in both New Zealand and in D1GP Japan.
Hopefully we'll have the chance to see him in the USA again soon!

Earlier this week Mad Mike Whiddett debuted his new RX8 drift car in New Zealand, letting our buddies at NZPC get first dibs on shooting this beast. The outside of the new car looks very similar to his RX7, with a wide BN Sports kit and of course the Red Bull graphics. In proper Mad Mike fashion, the wheels are Work Equips that are nearly as wide as they are tall. Under the hood is a three-rotor 20B fed by an HKS T51R turbine - something a bit different from the 4-rotor NA mill in the FD.
At the moment the Madbul FD is being shipped to Japan, so the RX8 will become Mad Mike's primary vehicle back home in NZ. We'll be keeping an eye out to see how Mike and the new car do in the NZ Drift series this year.
Thanks again to the NZPC and NZ Drift Series crew for the scoop.

So that's why there was a big cloud of smoke coming from the oval course at Willow Springs this weekend.
The new car looks and sounds awesome. Can't wait to see how JTP does with the RX8 this weekend in Jersey.

For some reason, people have a tendency to underestimate Bergenholtz Racing. That's a mistake. Big mistake. Bergenholtz Racing was the most successful privateer drag racing team in the NHRA Sport Compact Series, using unrelenting determination and ingenuity to clown the big dollar budget of GM over and over and over again. Don't believe it? There's a display case full of Wallies (the coveted NHRA Wally Parks trophy) at Ron Bergenholtz's Orange County home to prove it. Ron B and the...

Since I have quite a few friends that own Mazda RX7s and RX3s, I've seen firsthand how fun they can be, and have always had a certain respect for rotary powered vehicles. I even owned a 13B powered FC3S RX7 about ten years ago, so I am definitely a plan of the RX platform. About a week ago, I was given the opportunity to test drive the 2009 Mazda RX8 R3, the newest evolution of the RX8 platform. The most obvious changes that the R3 version offers over the normal RX8s begin with the exterior....

Mad Mike Whiddett's crazy wide body RX7 has been featured a few times on Speedhunters. While this iconic FD has many fans around the world, it appears Mike has a new build brewing for the 2009 New Zealand drift season...... At the final round of the 2008 NZdrift series, Mike attempted to compete in a show room stock spec race RX8 ..... It was just to get a feel for the car before it was be dismantled...... Now Mike and his team are working hard to get this RX8 ready for the 22 nd of March for...

Just last week, I was given the opportunity to test drive the R3 version of the 2009 Mazda RX8 . Since Mazda's television ads state that there are more Mazdas racing on any given weekend than any other car brand, I decided that I should prove this theory by taking the RX8 to the track. Since some of my recent driving impressions took place at a road racing circuit, I decided to switch things up a bit and refresh my skills in solo racing, or timed autocross. Searching the internet for a local...

It's funny to think some Speedhunters readers were concerned that we had gone through our Mazda lineup of cars and forgotten about about Tony Angelo's RX8. Don't worry, we didn't. How could we forget? Everyone knows that Tony has been a devoted Mazda fan for a long time... does anyone remember his article in Wired Magazine that describes him running his local mountain roads in his home state of Pennsylvania? Tony represents his beloved PA pretty hard, which is probably why he always...

I'm not sure how many of our readers regularly follow the 24 Hours of Daytona... but it's happening this weekend in Florida, and our good friends from Mazdaspeed are campaigning four cars out there this weekend. Here's a photo of one of them. Good luck to all our Mazdaspeed friends! -Antonio Alvendia

At the beginning of the month, I posted some photos of "grassroots" RX7 drift cars from Japan and the USA. Now, I'm going to continue with some shots pro-spec rotary drift cars at D1 events on both sides of the pacific. I wish I could say that I was around to shoot some of the cars from D1's "glory days" (Haruguchi FC anyone?), but I was a high school student during that time! Nonetheless, there are still lots of cool RX7's and the occasional RX8 seen in D1 these days....
