Here are the highlights of day three and four of the Monte Carlo Rallye.
The event has now concluded with Loeb taking a well deserved victory. The Mini team must also be well pleased with their second place result, not to mention Petter Solberg and Mikko Hirvonen's excellent debuts for Ford and Citroen respectively.
Final Top 5 Positions:
1. Sebastien Loeb - Citroen
2. Dani Sordo - Mini
3. Petter Solberg - Ford
4. Mikko Hirvonen - Citroen
5. Evgeny Novikov - M-Sport Ford

I've been fishing around the interwebs today, looking for Monte Carlo Rally photos and just noticed that Michelin has started producing a steady stream of WRC youtube videos on their website: Best of Rally Live.
And as not all of you WRC fans have access to Eurosport's excellent Monte Carlo Rally coverage, this should allow you to get a visual on the latest action. Enjoy!

Since the start of Speedhunters in 2008, I've made a point of reading literally every single comment posted on our stories. I'm always interested to see what you think of our work, both the good and the bad. There are always changes going on in automotive trends and tastes, and reading your comments helps to provide snapshots of the Speedhunters audience's mood at any given moment. So when the results of the Great Speedhunters Audience survey came up last month, there weren't too...

Are we ready for 2012 folks? Let's get in the mood for some new racing action with a video recap of the first day's events on the Dakar Rally. With VW no longer competing, it's the Mini team who've now moved into the foreground, locking out all three podium positions.
The day's running was blackened by the death of motorcyclist Jorge Boero, who fatally crashed out at the 55km point.
Day one positions:
Pos Driver Car Time/Gap
1. Leonid Novitskiy Mini 32m12s
2. Krzysztof Holowczyc Mini + 5s
3. Stephane Peterhansel Mini + 9s
4. Giniel de Villiers Toyota + 15s
5. Robby Gordon Hummer + 49s
6. Carlos Sousa Great Wall + 52s
7. Christian Lavieille Dessoude + 1m00s
8. Bernhard van Brinke Mitsubishi + 1m20s
9. Orlando Terranova Toyota + 1m56s
10. Ricardo Leal dos Santos Mini + 2m13s

On this day 25 years ago, the FIA banned Group B, a championship which was completely out of control. It was inevitable then, that the only outcome would be a permanent ban of the group. It's easy for us to look back at the untamed monsters that decimated the stages with awe but it's also easy to forget the lives that were lost. One of the only surviving Group B cars that still competes today is the MG Metro 6R4. It's certainly not pretty but it was and still remains very effective. It's rare to experience a complete stage on-board a Group B car so allow Messrs McRae and Grist to show you the Donegal countryside from aboard their three litre, six cylinder and circa-400BHP 6R4. Turn up your speakers and remember Group B ...

While walking through one of the halls at the recent Essen Motor Show I was very surprised to see a bunch of rally cars from yester year. They were part of a display that celebrated 100 years of the Monte Carlo Rally. The Motor Show had selected a few cars that won the rally in its 100 years of existence. I've made a small selection of the cars present beginning with this Subaru Impreza. The Subaru on display was oddly enough not the one that won the 1997 Monte Carlo Rally. The car you see here...

Where some strive for that perfect die cast collection or others endeavour to build the most accurate RC cars, my own personal vice is of the paper and hardback variety. Any show or event I attend, if there's a stand selling books you can get your bottom dollar I'll be there drooling over what's on offer. I guess the reason why I pick up so many automotive related books is even though the internet is a great resource, you still can't beat the highly detailed information on offer out...

When you picture a rally car, what model comes to your head? An Evo? An Impreza? A Citroen? If you are looking back to the gold old days maybe a Ford Escort or a Mini Cooper?
How about a V8-powered Ford Falcon?...

I thought I'd pair up our event coverage of the MKII Escort Challenge with a post containing some desktops from the event. Pictured above is the MKII Escort Challenge winner Daniel McKenna in his Class 14 modified Ford Escort. Second in the MKII Escort Challenge was the hugely entertaining Gary McPhillips in his modified Ford Escort on the last corner of SS8. Pictured a little bit earlier in the day is David Condell in the McEvoy Motorsport prepared Ford Escort. I also snuck in this shot of Robert...

It's strange. No matter how much drifting I experience and regardless of how much tyre smoke I inhale from third and fourth gear slides, I still rather the sight and sound of a MKII Escort on a tight rally stage. A couple of weeks back, I was standing on the roadside of a narrow back road, some twenty minutes from Carlow town. It was pretty early on a Sunday morning and already the sound of Millington Diamond engines could be heard echoing feintly around the hills of the surrounding countryside...

I was just over on the Driftworks forums when I came across a great post by user Stavros (who also happens to be the deputy editor for Redline magazine in the UK and a top bloke) who has found some amazing shots of a Lancia ECV that appear to have been taken last year. The ECV stands for Experimental Composite Vehicle and the car was a prototype for Group S, which would have been the group to replace the famous Group B in world rallying. The car was originally thought to have been destroyed but luckily...

Group B. An era which undoubtedly conjours up memories of a time where fire breathing cars would dominate the world rally stages. It was also a time of huge danger in the sport, drivers being forced to tackle stages at maximum attack whilst navigating a sea of people, all eager to catch a glimpse of their heroes at full tilt. At the 2011 Autosport International, Motorsport News had put together an inspiring stand of six legendary Group B cars that allowed fans of all ages to get up close and personal...

Just spotted this pop up on Twitter, it's a great look back at the 1972 RAC Rally of Great Britain where after ten years of trying, Roger Clark finally defeated the Scandinavian competitors in a Ford Escort MKI. The soundtrack of the cars coming through the forest is something else along with the variety of cars competing.

We got some requests for desktops from the COSMC Halloween Stages rally so I thought who better to grace your desktops than the man who dominated the event in his Modified Starlet, Mr Paul Mulcahy. As always, available in both standard and widescreen versions. - Paddy McGrath

Rallying was always my first love. It's a family thing really, an entire lineage before me was involved in the sport in one way or another. My father was a photographer, my uncles built cars and competed themselves, an entire side of my family has past or current involvement in the sport so it was never going to be an option to not get involved. From a young age I'd accompany my Dad to the stages as he'd photograph and I'd cheer my uncles on. I was really, really young so most of...

Following the somewhat anti-climatic end to the rally car competition at X Games 16, all of us were looking forward to the debut of the SuperRally event.
With four drivers running wheel to wheel around the track, everyone hoped this new event would bring some much needed excitement to the day....

Continuing on with my look at the rally competition from X Games 16, we move on to elimination action on Saturday afternoon.
As we'd soon find out, the biggest hurdle for the drivers wouldn't be their fellow competitors, but the course itself. ...

Well, another year of X Games competition is in the books and as I write this, guys are probably hard at work removing all of that dirt from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Hey, how do they do that anyway?
As you might have heard, there have been mixed reactions to this year's rally competition, but we'll get into that later. For now, here's some of the action from practice on Friday....

Yesterday was rally car day at X Games 16 in Los Angeles. After all of the madness on the the floor of the LA Coliseum, Tanner Foust took home gold medals in both of the rally events. First off, Tanner defeated fellow Fiesta driver Brian Deegan to take gold in the classic X Games rally car competition. A bit later he held off fellow drifters Sam Hubinette and Stephan Verdier, as well as Brian Deegan in the new Super Rally event - where four cars go wheel to wheel around the tricky course. More X...

Already I can hear the call of those deriding the ride height of this eight/six. I do have some unfortunate news for these people : Stance, ride height and offset is not the be all and end all. Like everything there is a time and a place for it and hell, I enjoy a properly stanced car as much as the next guy but sometimes you have to realise that there can be more important factors to consider ... You may remember last month I covered the Carlow Stages / MKII Escort Challenge rally here in Ireland...
