The Formula One season starts this weekend in Bahrain and given our F1 preview was so popular last year, it is time for Speedhunters bring you a brief preview for the 2010 season. Biggest changes surround World Champions, past and present. The 2009 World Drivers Champion, Jenson Button, left Brawn GP at the end of 2009 to join McLaren Mercedes, where Lewis Hamilton is firmly entrenched. It is going to be a challenge for Jenson to get into the tight McLaren-Hamilton relationship and beat Lewis…but...

Heading into the final round of the NZ Drift Series I was sitting in 2nd place and there was only 22 points separating me from the championship leader Gaz Whiter. For me to take the title it meant I needed to finish one spot ahead of Gaz and qualify 2 spots ahead to claim the championship. My sights were set high to qualify 1st and finish 1st and I was super confident to make this happen. Pukekohe being my favorite track with the infamous entry "widow maker" sweeper which is a 5th gear full throttle 200+kmh corner! The judges had really asked for carnage when they announced they want us to run a new line, and made it an outside clipping zone around the entire sweeper....

Only two weeks out from the D1NZ finals, we were scheduled to be at Taupo Motorsport Park for round 3 of the NZDRIFT series. After a 2nd and a 3rd placing at the opening rounds I was ready and confident to stand tall at this round after the changes we had made to the RX8. The car has improved so much in only 4 competitions....

I've been shooting video for almost twenty years now (yikes!) and am reasonably handy with the NFS team's studio Panasonic HVX200 HD camera. At this stage I find shooting racing action pretty intuitive... I arrive at the track and instantly know where I want to shoot, what lens to select and what type of camera action is needed. It's all pretty fluid. Now I've recently started to shoot photos too. I have my own film camera language that I've built up with my film/video career...

We have posted a couple of Formula 1 articles this year, so I thought it would be a good time to bring Speedhunters up to date with the fantastic achievements of the Independents in Formula One. We have already had five rounds of the 2009 season, four 'fly-away' races and last weekends Spanish GP. Brawn GP’s Jenson Button has won four of the races, while Red Bull’s Sebastien Vettel won in China, Red Bull's first win. It’s a remarkable achievement for the two independent...

Last week, after we published this picture of the Red Bull sponsored 20B powered RX3, Brad Lord from NZ Performance Car mag send me an email to tell me more about this wild machine. It turns out the car was built in Auckland, New Zealand by a shop called Rotaspeed for the car's owner, Mark Maloney from Barbados. Brad says it has an NA 20B engine setup with a sequential gearbox and a trick RX8 suspension conversion....

We'll have to make our way to the Caribbean next year to check this machine out, but in the meantime you can get a sense of the car from these two youtube vids.

One thing I love about our little Speedhunters project is how so many of you are getting in touch with us, to showcase your local car scenes. Jason Joaquin from Barbados has recently been sending us emails about a Pan-Caribbean series called the CMRC or Caribbean Motor Racing Championship. It consists of three rounds: the Jamaica meet is on May 24th, this is followed by round two in Barbados in August and finally the championship concludes in Guyana in November. There are some pretty wild cars running...

Our Formula One preview proved popular last month, so I thought I would share this cool image of Sebastian Vettel in the wet, on his way to winning his second F1 victory in the Chinese Grand Prix. Team mate, Mark Webber was 2nd. Vettel's first win was at the Italian Grand Prix last year, becoming the youngest ever winner at just 21 years old! Both races were wet races in which the German started from Pole Position. Quite an achievement. Vettel is unique in having scored Red Bull's first wins...

The 2009 Formula 1 World Championship kicks off this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. This has the potential to be one of the most open seasons ever, with new rules and regulations. A number of rules have been brought in, giving a Formula 1 car a different look. From the side, most of the aerodynamic aids have disappeared and the cars look much cleaner. However, wider front wings and narrower rear wings look out of place, even after 2 months of testing. The earlier Video post below goes into more...

I got an email today from Brad Lord of NZ Performance Car Magazine, and he gave me the scoop on Mad Mike Whiddett's new drift car. Wait, didn't Mad Mike just debut his new Madbul RX7 a few months ago? Yes, but now he has another new car. This weekend was the final around of the Stil Vodka Drift Series in New Zealand and Mad Mike appeared in his new drift car project, the Mazda RX8 pictured here. His four-rotor RX7 was still in the USA after the Red Bull drift event....

If you are even somewhat familiar with the international drift scene, then you probably know about Mad Mike Whiddett from New Zealand and his infamous RX7. If you need a refresh, you can check out the feature I did on his car a while back. Those old specs on his car are now history though because on Friday night New Zealand time, Mad Mike unveiled his new car which is now sponsored by Red Bull. Thanks to our friends Brad Lord and Adam Croy at NZ Performance Car Magazine, we have some fresh photos...

The DTM is a German based Touring Car Championship, currently featuring rear wheel driver 480bhp V8 powered Mercedes and Audi 'silhouette' racecars. Although its called a Touring Car Championship, in reality, its closer to F1 or ALMS/LMS with carbon chassis and huge budgets. Most rounds take place in Germany, but the series also visits Zandvoort (Holland), Brands Hatch (UK), Mugello (Italy) and Barcelona (I shouldnt need to tell you where that is!!!). As you can see, the most obvious feature...
