Some of you guys may have heard the news today that Shaun Carlson passed away over the weekend. Shaun was the owner of NuFormz Racing and was a pioneer in both drag racing and later in drifting while working with Samuel Hubinette. Shaun will be sorely missed by everyone in the community and it won't be the same having Formula D events without him. Here's sending our best to wishes to all of Shaun's family and friends from everyone at Speedhunters. -Mike Garrett...

Hubinette: " Heyyy... what's up guys! So... you got an extra racing suit that fits me? " It's been a while since people have seen me post up here on Speedhunters; I've been on a much needed vacation - traveling, relaxing, and working on other projects. Anyway, I received a shocking phone call this evening from one of the guys I do business with at Mopar. Apparently, due to unfavorable financial issues, Mopar has been forced to withdraw from their sponsorship and support of Samuel...

Okay, so get this. What if you woke up one morning, and got a phone call from Lamborghini headquarters in Italy, asking if you could fly out immediately to test drive the fastest Lamborghini ever built by the factory? Just how quickly do you think you could brush your teeth, pack your bags, and head to the airport?

This crazy scenario was actually a true story for a person I know. Four weeks ago, he was personally chosen by Lamborghini to fly to a high security aircraft hangar located in Hamburg, Germany. His mission was to test drive a prototype Lamborghini, for the filming of a new car debut film, which would be played at the Geneva Auto Show. The car in question would be the previously unreleased Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 Super Veloce - one of only two prototypes that exist in the entire world.

This new Murcielago LP 670-4 Super Veloce produces 670 horsepower, and is 220lbs lighter than a normal Murcielago. It truly is a supercar - it does zero to sixty in only 3.2 seconds! It's limited too - only 350 of these LP 670-4 SVs will be produced.

So imagine YOU were the person that was called on by Lamborghini. Just how fast could YOU pack your bags?

BONUS Points: Can anyone guess who was driving the Murcielago SV in the film?

Now this is interesting! Everyone says that drifting is all about car control. That being said, professional drifters should be able to control a car better than other drivers. But wait... what if the car is front wheel drive? Do pro drifters still have the same amount of car control that they exhibit with rear wheel drive cars?

To figure this out, our friends at GT Channel staged a different kind of professional driving competition - "The Flip a Beyatch Contest." What exactly is flipping a beyatch? For those Speedhunters readers outside of the USA that may be unfamiliar with the aforementioned term, flip a beyatch is a popular slang term that young Americans (maybe mostly in California? I dunno, cause even my East Coast friends say it... but then again, maybe it's cause most of them know popular Cali slang? I dunno.) use instead of "u-turn."

Anyway, a few weeks back, our friends at GT Channel invited us to drive out to El Toro Airfield in Irvine CA to watch the filming of their second FAB Contest. There were all sorts of automotive industry people in attendance, including some past and present Formula D judges, Daryl David from Belle 1 Communications, Ryan Sage from Formula D, and Ashley Sarto, one of our favorite Hankook umbrella girls. In order to make the competition interesting, GT Channel invited three popular pro drifters from the Formula D Series to compete in this precision driving contest - Daijiro Yoshihara, Samuel Hubinette, and Kenshiro Gushi.

Enough talk, check out the trailer from GT Channel's website... and when you're done with that, check out the video from the original FAB Contest on GT Channel, by clicking on the link below!

Right now, I'm sitting in my hotel room in Frankfurt Germany, with the air conditioning turned up so cold I think my laptop might have icicles forming on it soon - just the way I like it! Walking through the airport in Frankfurt, I saw quite a few people who sort of look like Samuel Hubinette! After all, he looks very European (obviously - he's from Sweden!), even though the car he drives in Formula D competition is straight up American muscle. So to keep within the theme of all the drifting...

Samuel Hubinette is back in front of our cameras showing us around his 2008 Formula Drift competition machine: a supercharged 748bhp Dodge Viper SRT10. This is a continuation of our ongoing exploration of the convergence of drifting culture and American muscle cars....

As I write this, it's super late at night; we're all tired and sunburnt from yet another long day at the racetrack, shooting images and video of Formula D New Jersey, at Englishtown Raceway. I'm sitting in the lobby of our hotel in New Jersey, using the hotel's wireless internet to upload photos to the site, while the rest of the Formula D people - staff, drivers, judges, etc are all sitting around with me, watching the LA Lakers play the Boston Celtics. Since I don't really care...

The Drift Limo is gone long live the Drift Limo! Two time Formula Drift Champion Samuel Hubinette may have switched to his trusty weapon of choice, the Dodge Viper for the 2008 Formula Drift Season but his 2007 car will be remembered for some time. Looking back, it was quite an unlikely choice of car given its sheer size and mass. I have to tip my hat (and I do like wearing hats) to Samuel for what he achieved with this car in the short period of time he was running it! ...
