In the 12 hours of Sebring, the LMP1 drivers face the additional challenge of navigating through the GT field, who are in their own race. It's the racing equivalent of rush hour, with a seemingly never-ending stream of traffic to contend with. And in last year's event, Emanuele Pirro used the GT traffic to his advantage. Seeing the smallest of gaps, he cuts across to pass Sebastien Bourdais and a couple of back markers in one daring move. Bourdais was defenseless.

Our Top 20 Overtakes continues, and this time we have one of Andy B's picks. The 2007 12 Hours of Sebring had a nail-biting finish to the GT2 class. On the very last lap Jaime Melo, driver of the Risi Competizione Ferrari, was trying desperately to hold off Jorg Begmeister's Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. On newer tyres, Begmeister was forced to use every inch of the track to make his pass; and while that pass in itself was fantastic, it was Melo who would then dive back up the inside into the final corner. What a pass. And what a finish!

With the 12 Hours of Sebring happening this weekend in Florida, we thought we would put up another blast from the past as we did around the time of the Daytona 500.
This time we have a selection of photos that Mark Windecker shot at the 1988 Sebring IMSA race.
So, what did sports car racing in North America look like 23 years ago?...

The 59th running of the 12hours of Sebring takes place this weekend and will kick off a series of GT racing previews on Speedhunters. This year, the Sebring Endurance race plays host to the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and the regular American Le Mans Series. It makes for a packed grid of 56 cars, with a confusing number of classes…. Most cars are entered in one or the other series. A few, such as BMW are running in both. Confusing! The Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) is a series of Endurance...

The 2010 ALMS season for the Falken Tire team had its highs and definitely its lows. With the onset of the 2011 season, they've upgraded the 2010 Porsche GT3 RSR to 2011 spec (basically a 2010 car with 2011 bodywork) and also employed a new team to manage the car, Walker Racing. Here's a film introducing the new team while they were testing at Sebring a few weeks ago during the winter test sessions.
Looking forward what the upgraded car and the new team can do next week with the start of the season at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The testing and launch season for various teams and cars is now well underway. In a couple of days, Peugeot will show off their new endurance racer. In the meantime, Audi have been busy at Sebring testing the new R18 TDI in tandem with the current R15 ‘plus’, which will race at the 12hours of Sebring in March. Nine Audi factory drivers took part in the test including Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen. Audi are not making the same mistake with the R15, where development was rushed. The car...

Earlier this month I posted about the new Cadillac CTS-V Coupe that will compete in the SCCA World Challenge series. Here we have a great shot of the car undergoing testing at Sebring this week.
Look absolutely sinister without livery, doesn't it?

The majority 12 hours of Sebring non-racing experience comprises of witnessing a lot of nutters camping at various corners throughout the track and claiming that spot as theirs. There are the well known Turn 10 party people which party like it was 1999 all over again.... for 2 days straight. Many other parties reside at all the corners. But for the quintessential petrol-head Sebring nerdgasm, Turn 7 is the place to be. No other corner sees as much action as turn 7. It's a hairpin corner that...

Sebring 12 Hour - It's one of the biggest sports car races in the US and featured on the American Le Mans Series as the start of the season for a number of years. It's the longest race in our season and it set's the tone for the rest of the year. If you do well here, you put yourself in a good position to challenge for the championship. This Sebring is a little different, though. The tone has already been set in GT2 over the last year or two. All of the top teams know the challenge that...

The bad thing about starting a twelve hour race at 10:30 in the morning is the food coma induced lull that blankets the whole circuit after 1pm. The top tier racing teams are fed well. How about some slow roasted barbeque catered in the pit lane, with mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and many other southern delicacies? Southern sweet tea? How about finishing your amazing lunch by perusing through baskets filled with candies and cakes of various degrees of amazing deliciousness? The result of this...

Napoleon Bonaparte, a man who conquered most of Europe during his prime, knew a thing or two about warfare. However, being a pragmatist at heart he declared "I do not want a good General, I want a lucky one". That expression could easily serve as a motto for the 2010 Sebring 12 Hours. Several parties used their 'get out of jail free card' to great effect, others got screwed through no fault of their own. It was all gloriously random and made for a great event. Take IMSA for instance...

March 17th, yes it's St. Patrick's Day when the whole of the USA turns green, drinks Guinness and pretends to have some connection with Ireland. Well, why not, any excuse to have a gargle even if the green wigs do not really go with my complextion. Down in Florida's Central Highlands the date also has a deep significance, it also involves alcohol in industrial quantities but this time a race is tacked on. So in 2010 we anticipate the 58th running of the Sebring 12 Hours, the first round...

No top-flight sports car series or race would be complete without the likes of Porsche and Ferrari. This year the two of them will be going at it hammer-and-tong in the GT2 category, a vital part of the endurance racing fabric. There was a time, however, when these two giants vied not for class honors but rather for the overall win. That took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The premier class in international sports car racing from 1968 through 1971 was Group 5. This allowed for five-liter...

transition n. 1. change or passage from one state or stage to another.................if one world encapsulates the 1999 edition of the Sebring 12 Hours it is surely transition. Everything was changing and yet much remained the same. The race was the first of a new series and a new concept. The American Le Mans Series was born at Sebring in March 1999 and the radical idea of taking the rules that governed the greatest race on earth and applying them to North American sportscar racing was put into...

A lot of the time people can be a bit adverse to change no? We get used to things being a certain way... we find comfort in our inspiration and then if the winds start blowing in a new direction, well, we may not feel that pleased do we? Take this big debate about the state of drifting in the US of A . Personally speaking, I think 2009 will be a marker year in american drifting, as it appears to (finally) be fully separate and distinct from the Japanese scene, which originally inspired it not too...

You may have seen my post earlier in the week where we introduced you to the new Acura ARX-02a American Le Mans Series, which made its debut at the ALMS Winter Test in Sebring. The test took place earlier this week, and Marshall Pruett has kindly allowed us to show some of his images, showcasing some of the new machines. Rahal Letterman brought their new 'works' BMW M3 E92 GT2 race car. Its the first time people have been able to get close to it and you can tell BMW mean business. This is...

The 2009 American Le Mans Series began earlier today, with its annual Winter test today at Sebring. A number of new machines made their debut including the stunning new Acura LMP1 car, with some very interesting aerodynamics and form. The new Rahal-Lettermann run BMW M3 E92 Coupe also made its first 2009 appearance. More images over at SpeedTV.com's Sebring gallery , courtsey of Marshall Pruett. -Andy Blackmore
