Mad Mike Whiddett today announced that he will be competing in the 2012 D1GP championship in Japan. And, as you might have guessed, he'll be behind the wheel of a quad rotor RX-7. However as this teaser photo shows, it's a different car to the 'MADBUL' FD RX-7 that was nominated as the 2011 Speedhunters Car of the Year. Dubbed the 'JAPBUL', the D1GP RX-7 was built by Magic Co in Japan, and is set to debut at the Odaiba round on April 14. - Charles Kha Mad Mike Whiddett's...

JULY: AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia, Spa, Belgium 1/800th, F/5.6, 600mm, ISO200 Canon EOS 5D/Canon 300mm F/2.8L-IS + 2x Extender Summer break? Not for Speedhunters. May to August is always one of the busiest times in the racing schedule: the meat of the season, where every weekend seems to involve planes, trains and automobiles – lots of automobiles. And that's never a bad thing. For me it mostly meant tracking Team Need For Speed's progress in the second half of their FIA European GT3...

JANUARY: Jaguar XK-R, Dubai Autodrome 1/30th, F/3.5, 24mm, ISO3200 Canon EOS 5D MKII/Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L Sportscars are my personal passion, and 2011 proved to be another great year Speedhunting exotics on the road and tracks around Europe and the Middle East. From the warm sun and balmy desert nights of the Dubai 24 Hours in January to the windy classic coastal track of Zandvoort in Holland in October, putting together these Photos Of The Year stories is an enjoyable reminder of the great events...

These past few days, I've been digging through the year's photo archives and I've enjoyed the trip down memory lane. As great as that nostalgic trip was, I found myself feeling a bit bad as I've forgotten some of the photo shoots I've been on. When you're in the grind of going to shoot after shoot, often the photographic events start to blur and blend into one another. But if there was one shoot that stood out as memorable and unique, it was when I spent a morning with Vaughn...

Where to start? That was the question that lingered in my mind when it came time to write up the feature on Vaughn Gittin Jr.'s Team NFS RTR-X. Unlike a lot of the cars we feature here on Speedhunters, the RTR-X is something that many of you are already familiar with - whether you followed Vaughn's build posts, saw the car at an event, or even drove it virtually in an NFS game. ...

Mad Mike sent us this video of his recent exploits in New Zealand, where he is competing in the D1NZ drift series. For this year he is campaigning the newly revised MADBUL FD RX-7 which is lighter and more powerful (to the tune of 674hp at the wheels). The new formula seems to be working, with Mike claiming victory in the opening round at Manfeild Raceway.

Let's pick up from where we left off from Round 2 of the Castrol Edge D1NZ National Drifting Championship. The second round saw New Zealand's drift series converge on the high speed Pukekohe circuit. As mentioned in yesterday's instalment, the track had very strict noise restrictions on the cars. Many of the drivers had used up their one warning during practice, so were on their last chance heading into the competition. Justin Rood and the other judges went over their revised lines for...

Round 2 of the Castrol Edge D1NZ National Drifting Championship took place at the notorious Pukekohe Park Raceway just outside of Auckland city in New Zealand. The track is advertised as having the fastest drift corner in the world... ...With drivers entering sideways at close to 200kph. And because of these speeds it can also be very, very unforgiving. Pukekohe Raceway always brings plenty of carnage, so let's check out all the action from day one. Drivers gathered in the early morning to hear...

When first asked to help judge the NFS Euro Spokesmodel search , I jumped at the opportunity. In addition to helping out my friends in Team NFS, I was eager to share the experience of a lifetime with the spokesmodel candidates. Along the way, I met a lot of wonderful girls and I have to admit that it became increasingly difficult to pick out clear winners as the search progressed. Yet now that the project has come to an end, I am equally excited to introduce you to the two lovely ladies who will...

Global Time Attack finished it's inaugural season with a bang this past week at one of the most beautiful tracks in North America, Infineon Raceway. In total seven records were broken. One of them now belongs to Team Need for Speed driver, Chris Rado, who beat the previous front wheel drive time attack record by about seven seconds. I thought it would be neat to have John Naderi, from Global Time Attack, chime in a bit about how the event went....

In part one we introduced some of the principle terms involved in setting up a race car, and then in part two Edward Sandstrom, Team Need For Speed driver in the FIA European GT3 Championship, explained how he goes about finding the optimum set-up and copes with the ever-changing nature of a race car out on track. I'll wrap with Edward talking about the team approach to a race weekend: how the team supports the two drivers and the procedures they follow to keep the car in optimum condition. Edward...

It's not an easy decision to pack up your belongings and move to the other side of the world. You leave behind everything you love - your family, your friends, your home - and step into the unknown. At the beginning of this year, Fredric Aasbo did exactly that to chase a dream.

Leaving Norway behind, Fredric moved to the States to join the Team Need for Speed ranks. Although Fredric always met the fans with a smile, I'm sure there were many hard moments behind the scenes. Out of the car, Fredric had to overcome the culture shock and language barrier. In it, he had some big, Tanner Foust-sized shoes to fill.

Will Roegge and Skylar Smith edited this video that sheds some light on the driver known as the Norwegian Hammer. A special thanks to Will, Skylar, Linhbergh, Justin Shreeve and Joe Ayala for the amazing shots.

In part one of this story , I talked with Team Need For Speed FIA GT3 driver Edward Sandstrom about the complexity of setting up a racing car, including issues like wing angles, suspension, tyres and data analysis. Over the next two parts we'll move on to how Edward and Team Need For Speed then practically apply these principles over a typical race weekend, starting with Edward talking us through the evolution of a set-up over a race weekend, using the last round of the 2011 FIA GT3 Championship...

The Speedhunters community is in full swing and almost every day we get messages saying we should check out certain collectables or RC builds. For the last few days I have been sifting through numerous forum threads when we received an email from Christer Stromark. In it was a photo of another replica of one of our Team Need For Speed cars. After I featured Matt Powers' S14 RC replica it is now time for this Supra that has been made famous by Fredric Aasbo. This Supra has been built by Christer...

Need for Speed The Run starts hitting shelves today - the European launch is this Friday - and there's some aspects to the game that we thought you'd find interesting. The Run features actors Sean Faris and Christina Hendricks (yes, of Mad Men fame), so it made sense for actual cars to be included too. Rod, Carl, Andy and I were entrusted with coming up with a short list of real-world cars that would gel with The Run's cross-crountry street racing theme. And I think we came up with a...

Hours are spent between engineers and drivers describing how a racing car feels in pursuit of that perfect set-up, often accompanied by the universal driver language of hand gestures. The most effective wing in the world isn't going to help you if it's at the wrong angle, or if your camber is out by a fraction and the car is eating its tyres. Winning or losing can be predefined by mere millimetres of difference in the configuration of each aspect of a racing car; every part must work in harmony...

What up Speedhunters! Just before SEMA, the Hot Rod Magazine team came out to shoot the Mustang RTR-X and I had to break editor Mike Finnegan into drifting properly. Mike is damn cool, obviously a car nut, and he also races insane jet boats. Like many, he was one of those guys that has seen drifting and likes watching it, but didn’t really “get it”. It was my job to represent and let him see why we love the sport so much. Back to back 100mph+ entries in the Team Need for Speed RTR-X and my Monster Energy Falken Tire Ford Mustang was just what he needed to fall in love, mission accomplished! Check out this video the Hot Rod team made and see how much fun we had out at El Toro!

One of the reasons I came to the recent RC Drift event was to see this car. It's a close replica of the Team Need For Speed S14 driven by Matt Powers. I was amazed at all the details the owner was able to put into it. Markus Busch is the person who created this masterpiece after he did the same with the 2010 car you saw in the first feature I did. The car started as a blank Yokomo S14 body. You have to cut all the excess plastic to make it fit onto your chassis and after that you can start to...

New Zealand's D1NZ series kicked off its new season at Manfield Raceway in Fielding, and although the practice day was met with adverse conditions, race day saw blue skies and packed grandstands. As fans took their seats the pits were still full of action. Teams checked over their cars and made last minute changes. Most of the teams had made it through the previous day with no major damage or mechanical issues so we knew we were in for some close battles. Clear skies, packed grandstands and some...
