In the early days of Speedhunters, whenever the subject matter of Need for Speed came up, it became clear that you guys thought we suffered from bad car style. And rightly so, it was the nature of the way that the 3D car models were created in the old games, that ended up with the same basic group of kit designs being used across all the various cars, irrespective of the model. We also had a situation whereby our old "rice" style wide body kits were being recycled from year to year, even...

Thanks to everyone who sent in their photos!... BTW We are thinking to run something similar for September's BMW month for 3 Series owners... think that will work? Are BMW owners as passionate and devoted to their cars as their AE86 contemporaries? Well we are about to find out!... In the mean time here are the last group of AE86 photo submissions from around the world....

A lot of people have asked me about the history and story about this car. To some, it’s just an old Corolla that’s not worth more than a few hundred dollars. To those that know and are fans of the Hachi Roku, they understand and appreciate the efforts that go into resurrecting them, building them and most importantly – driving them. Some have speculated that this car was “too showy”, but it was truly designed and meant to be driven. It has seen it’s fair share...

This post isn't about having the right or the wrong rims. It's not about stance, offset, demon camber or wheel fitment. Nor is this post about whether or not it's right or wrong to swap your AE86 engine to another brand. No, this post is about one thing only: a celebration of the worldwide AE86 community. In compiling these photos, I'm quite amazing to me to see just how far the cult of the Hachiroku has spread... It seems like there are fans of this little car in every pocket of the globe!
I'd like to thank everyone who sent in their photos. They are still coming in as I type this blog, but I've been able to format the the first set of pics for you to check out. They are presented in no particular order; enjoy!...

Do any of you guys read Hot Rod magazines like Rodder's Journal, Hot Rod Deluxe or Rod&Custom? One thing I like about that whole scene is that it's been around long enough to have developed a bit of self awareness. People know where Rodding comes from, the ups and downs of the styles over the years and how the current styles and trends fit into the history of the culture. Look at Rat Rods, for example. Most people who are into Rodding understand that these cars are caricatures of old...

I was browsing through some photos on Flickr last night when I caught this pic of a very clean looking TE27 Corolla running in a drift event. My first guess was that the photo had been taken in a Toyota-crazed area like Malaysia or the Philippines, but I was wrong. The picture was actually taken in Edmonton, Canada at the DMCC opener last weekend.
Besides the vintage Toyota, it looks like there were some other interesting cars taking part in this event.
Check out more photos from DMCC round one in mschroeter140's Flickr gallery.

What is it about classic Toyotas that have captivated people across the globe? Whether it's Japan, the USA, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Europe, Malaysia, or practically anywhere else on the planet, people are crazy about Toyotas from the '70s and '80s. This photo was sent to us by a Speedhunters reader named Amar, and the immaculate AE70 Corolla coupe pictured here belongs to one of the drivers of the Toyo Tires drift team in Malaysia....

Ever since I borrowed a friend's Corolla at D1 New Jersey to battle Ueno in 2007, I have a special place in my heart for AE86's. I have even bought 2 of them since: one rally spec, and one street that is rotting because I can't decide what to do with it but I don't want to get rid of it and chance not finding another one in such good shape. Since it is coming to the end of Toyota month I thought I would share these pictures (I hope I am allowed) that I just got from my leprechaun...

What could a Toyota month be without the Fensport AWD Celica? This car has seen drag strips, circuits and has even been to Tsukuba to show the Japanese how it's done in the UK. Fensport became immortal after making a 2.1l turbo 3s-gte powered Corolla that had AWD and was pushing 650bhp. But what do you make after that? Fensport wanted to make another all round car that was capable of winning quarter mile runs and hold its own during Time Attack battles. They came up with this AWD Celica with...

I'm going to be completely honest here. Back in my high school days when I spent Friday nights cruising with my buddies in a 5.0 Mustang, if someone came up to me and said that in a few years I'd consider 1980's Toyota sedans to be "cool", I would have laughed at them. In those days, I saw cars like the Corolla and Cressida as nothing more than beaters that parents handed down to their kids......

The rain isn't all bad. Sometimes the rain is a good thing, especially if you like conserving tires! Check out this photo, featuring an AE71, aka nana-ichi Corolla Levin from drift team NA Works. NA Works has been known for having some of the coolest looking TE71s and AE71s in Japan for quite some time. Back in the days when I was shooting for Hashiriya Battle Magazine, NA Works was in BM like every single month, with their medium gray 4AG 20v AE71! And with good reason! Awesome cars and awesome...

And now for some more Toyota-themed material from my photo archive. This time let's take a look at Toyotas from the late 1950s through the mid '70s - a period which saw Toyota lift itself out of Japan's tough post war period and begin down the path to global domination. From the car geek's perspective, there are some fine Toyota machines from this period, ranging from slammed Crown wagons to period-correct Celica race cars. Living in Japan, I've been fortunate enough to see a lot of these cars first hand and have built up a pretty nice collection of vintage Toyota photos....

This Toyota Corolla has been transformed into a full blown Super GT contender. The car was build by APR, who were also responsible for the famous Lightning McQueen MR-S that competed last year in the GT300 class and even won 1 race. For the 2009 season APR thought it would be fitting to start with a completely new car. It was initially unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon and slowly a few more details have become available.. Team manager and chief engineer had this to say about his choice for the Corolla...

One of the rarest cars in the Corolla lineage is the KE15 Toyota Corolla 1200, or Corolla Sprinter. These cars came out even before the TE27; we're talking late 1960s here. Parts for the KE15/KE17 are extremely hard to find, no matter what country you search in - United States, Japan, Australia, Philippines, New Zealand, you name it. I have personal experience with trying to find parts for this car unsuccessfully - I owned a white KE15 about ten years ago, but ended up selling it after a year...

For some reason, I've been pretty enthralled by TE71/TE72 Corollas recently. Seeing cars like Grant Scott's AE71 in Australia and several of the AE71s I've seen in Japan definitely have me inspired. Accidentally, I even found a 1980 Corolla coupe for sale this week; I'm currently debating on whether or not I should buy it. Since I'm currently on this TE7x Corolla kick, I wanted to post up photos of this daily driven red 1980 TE72 Corolla 4-door, owned by Clarence (AKA Corollin...
