Ahead of the fourth round of the 2010 GT1 World Championship at Paul Ricard this coming weekend, the Sumopower GT team used the opportunity of a series of demonstration laps at Modified Live to shakedown the two cars. The team have made some small changes to an already potent package and I'm looking forward to watch these guys trade paint with the rest of the GT1 class this weekend. Rod, Jonathan, Will and myself will be providing you with full coverage of the event along with a live stream here...

Tucked between the two big Reiter race trailers in the Brno GT1 paddock was this yellow devil: the special edition Reiter Murcielago Strada, German race team Reiter Engineering have taken their experience from the decade or so they've been developing GT1 and GT3 Lamborghini racing weapons and applied it to the road, providing a shopping list of parts to turn your already raging bull into a snarling minotaur. Who wouldn't want to drive a big, fire-breathing GT1 car? Reiter's aim is to...

Yesterday Aurora Racing Designs announced that is developing an FIA GT1 race car based on the BMW-Alpina B6. Using experience from the B6 GT3 project, the new race car will be developed exclusively by Aurora for customers looking to campaign in the GT1 World Championship.
Little info about the car has been given at this point, but it looks it will be a worthy addition to the GT1 field.

Five different winners and five different marques of car had won so far in the new World GT1 Championship, with no repeat winner. Not so any longer: this weekend's Championship Race at Brno in the Czech Republic threw up a surprise winner in the #5 Matech Ford GT. Romain Grosjean and Thomas Mutsch looked like they'd be fighting for fifth at best, but some stunning pit work and a penalty for the pole position Vitaphone Maserati for jumping the start brought them to the front halfway through...

After a great qualifying session, the #23 Sumo Power GT Nissan GT-R of Scot Peter Dumbreck and German Michael Krumm were looking to take on the dominant #7 Young Driver Aston Martin DB9 and Vitaphone Maserati MC12s at the sharp end of the Qualifying Race. Mired at the back of the grid after not being able to get their Nissan GT-R to handle to their liking in qualifying, the #22 of Jamie Campbell-Walter and Warren Hughes would have to put in a stunning performance to get themselves into contention...

There's been a growing association in my mind between the GT1 events so far this years and colours. Abu Dhabi? Blue. The bright sky, the run-off strips and Yas hotel. Silverstone? Brown. Mud. Gravel. But Brno? Brno is verdant green. Green is the grass, green is the lush forest that the track sits in the middle of. It makes for great backgrounds for the cars, and means the deep howls of the cars reverberate around long after they've passed by. It's a beautiful track: with massive elevation...

It's been a whirlwind month for the new World GT1 Championship following the series' mid-April debut at the space-age Yas Marina track in Abu Dhabi. The subsequent stranding for almost a week of all the teams, thanks to the unpronounceable Icelandic volcano, meant that they had hardly got back to base before having to pack up the trucks and head for the second round at Silverstone in the UK. With only one weekend in-between, now the GT1 circus has moved back east again, to the Brno circuit...

Dawn on race day at Silverstone. Dark skies threatened storms and reports were coming in that the track was flooded in several places from the heavy overnight rain – and that the early morning GT1 warm-up might not even take place. Add to this that Silverstone was a building site in place, and the prospect of mud and GT cars sounded less than attractive. Could we be about to see the inaugural Silverstone Rallycross Special? Thanks to the efforts of the marshals and clean-up crews at the track...

I don't really have time to say anything poetic about this shot... other than the fact that I love race cars that also act like flamethrowers! The GT1 Lambos are on top form in this regard... ok gtg.. heading out to shoot the FIA GT3 race at Silverstone! There are DESKTOP images available too before you ask... :R

I will be King And you You will be Queen Though nothing Will drive them away We can be Heroes Just for one day We can be us Just for one day If ever a song was just written for a car, David Bowie's Berlin Wall inspired "Heroes" would fit like a glove on the Porsche 911 GT1-98. This week marks the beginning of some intense coverage of the GT scene here on SpeedHunters. Rod will, no doubt, bring you all up to speed on that but I thought I would jump into the time machine and go back to...

Day eight of our thee day trip to Yas Marina for the opening round of the World GT1 Championship. As all the FIA GT1 teams and associated personnel sat in the various hotels on Yas Island, stuck in Abu Dhabi because of the Icelandic volcano fall-out, there was time for reflection: at least until the beer ran out, as was rumoured to have happened in at least one hotel. GT1 presents a new global face of sportscar racing (or, 'sportswear', as my computer is desperate to auto-correct it). It's...

It's Tuesday, three days after we should have left Abu Dhabi and started preparing for the next round of the FIA GT1 Championship at Silverstone in the UK, which is in less than two weeks' time. The Sumo Power team are ready for round two: they want to be given a level playing field to show just what the GT-R can do… The two cars are already back in Europe, courtesy of freight transport – hopefully we won't be far behind. In the meantime, here are some desktops of the GT...

After a hectic week in Abu Dhabi of performance balancing, testing and set-up, the late start for on-track action on race day meant that teams had a little bit of extra breathing space to prepare for the pair of hour-long races. It also helped counter the fact that the working days were ending so late at the track: night-time races might have that extra magic but they also mean more pressure over an extended time for the mechanics. Also at the back of everyone's mind was the Icelandic volcano...

The final sessions on the first day of the new World GT1 Championship comprised pre-qualifying and night qualifying: the latter an open session for a race that would set the grid for the main event the following evening. However, the session came to a premature end after cars had completed only half a dozen laps or so, with the terrible news of an accident involving Natacha Gachnang. Her Matech Ford GT had suffered apparent brake failure at the end of the long main straight and had hit the barrier...

FIA GT1 World Championship, round one, Abu Dhabi. The Yas Marina track exists on an island dedicated to Formula 1 and motorsport. It's about as good as it gets for a petrolhead: an insanely luxurious but surprisingly affordable hotel in the middle of a state-of-the-art race track. As I flew in at night to land at the nearby Abu Dhabi terminal, the track was clearly visible off to the left, floodlights sparkling away and the pastel colours of the Yas Hotel shimmering and shifting. The wave of...

Every now and then a car makes an appearance and you just go WOW! You know it has attitude, class, speed and just a whiff of danger. Back in late 1997 Toyota unveiled their latest weapon in the continuing quest to take overall victory in Les Vingt Quatre Heures du Mans and the motorsport world took a step back in amazement. Now on the eve of the opening round of the new GT1 World Championship, it is a very SpeedHunters move to look back at the most extreme GT1 car of them all. After the dark days...

The Porsche 911 GT1-98 'Street Version' is a mean looking item. Flown direct from the Porsche museum in Germany for the 800+ car event FOSC held at Mt Panorama, N.S.W. Stay tuned for full event feature. -Casey Dhnaram.

The World GT1 Championship kicks off in just two weeks time, with the first round at Abu Dhabu's Formula 1 venue of Yas Marina on April 16/17. For the 12 teams taking part in this year's new, global series, every minute of the last few months has been precious – and there's been precious little time for most teams to complete their preparations. The 24-car grid is split neatly in half: the Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini Murcielago and Ford GT built to the new rules; the old-regs Chevy...

2010 sees the return of top-flight GT racing as an official World Championship for the first time since 1992, lining up alongside Formula One, World Touring Cars and World Rallying. British team Sumo Power will be running a pair of Nissan GT-Rs in the 10-round championship, which kicks off in Abu Dhabi next month. Speedhunters were able to see the cars being unloaded and prepared down at Sumo Power's base in Rye , on the south coast of England, back in January: since then the cars and team haven't...

I’ve recently come back from the NISSAN Motorsports Press Conference 2010. It was the first such event at the company’s gleaming new headquarters in Yokohama, where the DATSUN brand was born nearly 75 years ago. Naturally, the focus was on who will be driving for each of the three teams in the GT500 class of SUPER GT this season... .. but equally on what developments had taken place ahead of the inaugural FIA GT1 World Championship. With the sudden demise in December of Gigawave Motorsports...
