Last week we got an invite to a commercial shoot for NOS Energy Drink, featuring '09 Formula Drift Champion Chris Forsberg. Not knowing quite what to expect, I jumped into the car on Friday morning and headed north to Willow Springs, passing the endless string of commuters heading the opposite direction on Route 14 into the LA basin....

Those of you who followed our coverage of the Superlap Battle will recall the AMS team had a little bit of an issue with fire at the event. They've now just released this video where you can see what happened for yourself. The piece also documents the team's attempts to get the car fixed in time for the Red Line Time Attack event at Fontana a few days later. Check the video to see the dramas unfold!

We just did a premiere of this film to a packed house at the Formula D/Spo Com party in Las Vegas. It's a little tribute to the new Formula Drift 2009 Champion Chris Forsberg. Entitled "Portrait of a Champion" , it's a collaboration with the drifting film-maker of film-makers Will Roegge. ... And i suppose myself and Speedhunters' editor, Riley Vigier also had something to do with this film too.... We hope you like it! I also need to thank Ernie and Tutul from Nos Energy Drink...

I had the very fortunate honor of being a guest with Chris Forsberg and his team for the 5th Formula D round in Seattle. I had the opportunity to follow and document the day of competitions with Chris. The day started with Chris rubbing the crusty from his eyes, to the day-to-day race operations, then a quiet moment of self reflection with him and his car before the top 16, and finally, to stand on the top step of the podium! It was quite the experience to be a 'ghost' and follow the team...

I had the great opportunity to sit shotgun in Chris Forsberg's drift car as he rode out to the opening ceremonies of Evergreen Speedway for the start of the fifth round of the 2009 Formula Drift series. As we sat on the grid waiting to get out on the track, I had the great honor to witness an absolutely intimate moment with Chris and his car: he reached for his dashboard, as if starting the cars' race like start-up, laid his hands onto the center console gently, then bowed his head down slightly...

When you smell like of strange mix of sweat, rubber particles, and champagne you know you've spent the day at a Formula Drift Event.
After another exciting round of compeition, it was Chris Forsberg in the NOS Energy Drink 350Z who emerged as the day's victor. This was Forsberg's second win of the year, and he should be getting a nice boost to his lead in the FD points standings....

As part of our media partnership with NOS Energy Drink, I was able to spend some time with the NOS rally team at the X Games last weekend. As I mentioned earlier, this was my first rally event so it was eye-opening to get a first hand look at what goes on behind the scenes during one of these events....

Sunday was the final day of the X Games 15 in Los Angeles and for gearheads like us, the schedule saved the best for last.
Following Saturday's Moto X comp, the course inside the Home Depot Center was leveled and new the rally course was constructed in its place. By Sunday morning, the course was complete and the teams entered the Home Depot Center for morning practice.
Up until this point the Ford Fiesta teams had dominated on the tarmac, but many wondered how the Fords would perform on the dirt section and most importantly how they'd fly over the massive gap - a centerpiece of X Games rallying....

Bonneville is normally the hunting grounds for all matter of hot rods, streamliners and other American cars but there have been some high profile Japanese entries at Speed Week over the years. This year, it appears that the Japanese manufacturer flag will be flown by Chicago based Mitsubishi tuner AMS, who've been working with driver/owner Tommy P in the development of this Top Speed tuned Evo.
We're looking forward to seeing the car in the flesh next weekend at The Salt!

Another early morning and another road trip. Today it was south on Interstate 5 and through some surprisingly light LA traffic to the Home Depot Center in Carson for X Games 15 - more specifically the rally portion of the event.
I just got back to the hotel after a day of shooting, so here's a few photos from the day's practice and qualifying action....

There's something about rallying that draws people in. Could it be that we're drawn to mother nature, and also the taming such wilderness through our technological monsters? There really is something magical about ruining the silence of a quiet back country road the torrent of noise coming from some million horse power, all-wheel-drive, aero'd out, econocar. This 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was built for just that --ruining the piece of a quiet of Pike's Peak while getting up...

As everyone already knows, there's a huge difference between a professional racing team, and a bunch of friends banding together to form a racing team for a weekend. With a lot of the works teams, there's a sense of practiced mechanical precision that happens. Words are prompt, to the point, and delivered in the most professional manner. I've personally witnessed a polished, and well oiled racing team get down and dirty when the going gets tough. And watching a racing team put together...
