Le Mans 2009

So I watched the entire race, slept in until 4pm, and here I am. Let me just say that although it sounds nuts it is definitely worth it to watch the whole thing, it is quite a race filled with many dramas if you watch and follow closely. Now the inevitable truth: Audi could not defend their winning streak this season. I wanted them to win so bad, but it seems the odds were against them in many ways and it was just too much even for the dream team of TK, McNish,and Capello. Firstly it seems the land of France itself was with Peugeot on this occasion as contrary to the popular saying it did not rain at Le Mans. Anyone who watched the start of the race will know that the number 3 Audi with Alex Primat piloting went in the dirt on lap 3, the car survived only needing a new nose piece but was for all intensive purposes out of the race. The number 2 Audi with Lucas Luhr inside went into the wall with much force before the sun went down, he thinks he made a mistake but nobody knows and drivers are often overly critical. So TK, McNish, and Capello pounded on in third place while the number 9 and 8 Peugeot took first and second respectively with Marc Gene and Sebastian Bourdais piloting at the finish. So I have had a night of sleep to analyze what I have seen and the conclusion I have come to is this. Audi entered the race with a brand new and almost untested car, making a first place finish a miracle to begin with. The new rules state that you only get two 2 hour test sessions before Le Mans and on the first test day where many of the pilots got in the R15 for the first time it was rained out, this did not help obviously. Another problem for Audi was the understeer that plagued them at the beginning portions of the race, this was mostly due to the little practice they had as it was obvious they had to dial the car in during the race. Some tire pressure and suspension tweaks went by and the cars seemed dialed in but at what cost? The number 3 was game over serving as a tuning testbed for the number 1 and and the number 1 was behind the leader by 2 or just over 3 laps at times. I had the official online time board refreshing on my monitor while I watched on TV and TK and the other guys in the number 1 hauled ass during the most of the race setting blistering times with unhuman consistency but it would never be enough to gain back the lead. I suppose with a few lucky breaks on the safety car periods and some good decisions on tires and such they might have been able to get 2nd place but it seems it just was not in the cards. The sand and dirt on track was more prevalent than Audi thought and their new freeflow design lent itself to getting clogged up and this upped the charge temperatures which at times got hot enough to loose enough power that the R15 would have to go pit and get cleaned out with pressure washers. So all these factors together made it virtually impossible for Audi to win at Le Mans but I am starting not to mind so much, the Peugeot guys deserve the win they got no doubt (even if they did need to borrow a grip of Formula drivers just to do it =p). They had screens to collect the aggregate unlike Audi keeping their radiators and chargers cool and they had insane pit work; so insane sometimes I watched the number 9 car for what seemed like hours before it had to come in for fuel or tires. From the beginning the Peugeot guys set an insane pace and they just didn't stop bringin the game, marks of champions no doubt. So the hard lesson of Le Mans that so many other teams learn was relearned by Audi today: experience is everything. The 908 was tried and tested while the R15 made its debut in not just looks but tuning as well, making it's podium appearance that much more impressive. I have come to the conclusion that this was good thing for Audi; it was humbling and it creates opportunity for next year. Peugeot said they would drop out of Le Mans if they lost this race, so now Audi will have the opportunity of coming back to Le Mans with a tried and tested car and putting the hammer down on the only real competition they have. See you next year at LE MANS!

Just a panoramic view of what happens every single month in downtown Atlanta. During the peak of the night upwards of 500 cars are parked throughtout the lot, the underground parking lot, and in amongst the rows. Better yet, Atlanta Police is on the scene to prevent any acts of stupidy such as burnouts, along with any illegal activities from being done. One of the best car scene versus local police relationships I have seen. Enjoy!

Orange Driving Day @ Wachauring/ Austria (featuring KTM X-Bow)

Hi there,

on the 6th of August, a so-called Orange Driving Day, essentially a trackday organized and sponsored by the Austrian bike manufacturer KTM, took place at the Wachauring in the pittoresque Wachau region. This time, the ODD was focused on the brand-new KTM X-Bow sportscar, and contained several track sessions and a road trip, all supervised by well-trained instructors and Austrian rallye aces Kris Rosenberger and Raphael Sperrer.

A friend of mine was invited to attend the driving experience, and luckily, he asked me to come with him.

So, now I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

The weather was really superb.

Here you see the KTM-operated racing transporter, including a workshop tent and several X-Bows.

I don't know if the X-Bow's already known out of Middle-Europe, but that's it!

Carbon fibre just verywhere - here you can see the carbon-made monocoque chassis.

Optional, the X-Bow comes with visible carbon fibre panels.

An instructor shows the attendees how tthe car works. Necessary, as the car has NOTHING - no brake booster, no anti-lock brakes, no traction control, no stability programs. Only the driver.

The spartan cockpit. Optional, the steering wheel can be detached. Note that the seats are fixed, but therefore you can adjust the steering wheel and the pedals.

The competition has to get used to that view - 240 turbo-ponies, provided by Audi, meet well under 800 kg.

As an option, you can get center-lock wheels.

In my opinion, this is the ultimate driving machine of our days. Forget Lotus Elise, forget Ariel Atom, this is the real deal.

JDM Allstars Drift Event Wembley Stadium

Hi Guys, please try to enjoy my photo's, as always, this is Britain and its summer, so that means it rains for a good amount of time!

Wembley was the stage for this unique drift event to be held on UK soil....drivers from the EDC, BDC, Prodrift Ireland, Prodrift Europe, D1 Japan, and MSC all attended.

This has the makings of THE BEST drift event in europe, with a fantastic street course that resembled Odiaba in Japan.

Shakotan Matsuri 08

Last night I went to the first ever Shakotan Matsuri car show here in Boise, ID. It's the first car show here that was limited to only Japanese cars. We have a lot of Muscle Car shows but they are mostly the same cars every time and it gets ungodly boring. This Shakotan Matsuri show was a nice change. This time, No dirt roads, paved parking, and grills for a small nominal entry fee. (like $4.00 or less. Ft Yargo charges a day use fee)

This will be our second, all Japanese, Old Skool meet this summer. We plan on getting things started, at 3:00, at Fort Yargo park, on Saturday, August 16. I'm going to try to reserve a picnic pavillion for shelter, and cooking out.

At this event, we are going to try to do some really nice photos, and document the Old Skool cars out and about in our area.

So get your brakes fixed, rebuild your carb, and get a tag for your ride if it's not ready We have a month and a half to get our rides on the road. Lets make it BIG. I can see 70 cars at this one, if everyone from the last meet comes out! Ok, only two weeks left now!

Directions: Take Hwy 316 east (towards Athens), make a left on to hwy 81 (towards Winder) and Ft Yargo will be on the right a couple of miles out 81

Vintage Sports Car Club Event at Prescott Hillclimb, UK

Hello, here are some images I took at the VSCC event at Prescott Hillclimb in the UK.

The cars ranged from 1904 to the early 1940s and they were being competitively raced up the hill at full speed despite their age and price tags. It was a great day out and I feel honoured to have seen these mighty machines outside of a museum and getting some serious use

<12 Media's Coverage of Redline Time Attack, Import Alliance Meet, and HIN Nashville

This last saturday I once again volunteered with the SCCA to work as a corner worker when the Redline Time Attack visited Nashville Superspeedway's road course trying to break the record for fastest time.
Also at the Nashville Superspeedway that weekend was the annual Import Alliance Meet that draws the best imports in Nashville and the Southeast.
And to top the day off me and my friends (and fellow corner workers) headed to downtown Nashville to the old Nashville Speedway where HIN had their show set up. Some local drifters, Memphis drifters, and even Drifters from North Carolina put on a demo in front of the large crowd that was really loving it.
After a long day I was left with a sunburn and tons of pictures!

All these pictures are from the practice on Saturday, the actual competition was on Sunday. Unfortunately i had to drive to Atlanta to pickup my new truck. But I do have the results and I will post them with the pictures.

The fastest car of the weekend was the Top Speed Impreza driven by Luke Russell with a new track record of 1:03.7!!!

After along day at the track me, Andrew, and mike headed downtown for HIN Nashville. Luckily some awesome friends and drifters put on a great show for the still big crowd.

X Games 14 (2008)

X Games Rally took place in the Home Depot Center in Carson, California once again and as I live in Carson I just could not miss seeing some high flying 4WD action. I got there pretty early and was able to catch the crew adding the finishing touches to the course and some of the teams practicing.

Travis Pastrana's backup Team Subaru Impreza was sitting on display at the Subaru booth

McShae hit the wall just before entering the stadium. He suffered some sort of steering problem and was knocked out of competition.

This is Ken Block's Monster Subaru Impreza just after he nosed into the landing pad and damaged his radiator. He kept on going and won the race.

Tanner getting some air off the small jump in the Semi finals. It was a close race up until Mirra crashed into the wall after landing the ramp with steering damage from the previous race.

The final match-up, Travis Pastrana vs. defending gold medalist Tanner Faust.

I apologize in advance for the shakiness of the video, the whole stadium was shaking with excitement and all I had to shoot was a point and shoot camera.

Here's a few shots of mine from some recent Hillclimb events in Scotland, first ones are from the Doune Hillclimb (here) which was a round of the british championship and then the rest from Forrestburn which was 2 rounds of the Scottish championship(day one, day two). There's lots of single seaters, classics, sevens and anything in between in the sets, but here's a few of my own favourites. Enjoy.

Ron Kidell Skyline, Tarzan Yamada drove the car at Silverstone and the feedback he gave seems to have worked the car was flying throughout the day

Conditions were poor in the morning with a greasy wet surface catching out even the most experienced drivers.

well its that time of the year again where TRSCCA and Air Ride Technologies team up with Goodguys Car Show in downtown Nashville for an autocross for the classic car guys, i volunteered to shag cones, but all i really did was take pictures!

They had us set up next to the walkway bridge and we had huge crowds all weekend, here u can see the famous TRSCCA short bus manned by the short bus pro Andrew Cowden

The fastest car of the weekend was the Detroit Speed Camaro, soooooo fast and my favorite from the autox

The next fastest car was the Air Ride Technologies Mustang, Andrew's Favorite
U may remember this car from last year

this thing is so crazy it has a nascar transmission and a $9000 carbon clutch!

The Air Ride guys also brought out some of their other cars...
here is bright orange "velocity" camaro, i love the front end

this chevelle was built by Air Ride for a giveway car at the next goodguys in Ohio, i heard the owner of Air Ride loves this car!

of the other cars that ran the autox (anyone with a car in the show could for free) the biggest battle was in the oldest car class with these two machines battling it out till the very last run!

probably the craziest car of the weekend was this 50s ford longbed with a 5.0, skinny front/big rear tires, and the perfect stance
