Mike Garrett'S BIO

Name: Mike Garrett

Location: Tsukuba City, Japan

Previous Locations: Central California, USA

Career Path: Freelance journalist/photographer

Previous Career Paths: Fresh college graduate! Also have some experience working part time behind the counter at a small tuning shop.

Notable Projects/Wins: Auto-Otaku.com - my personal web project covering Japanese car culture, collaborations with various auto-related websites and magazines from around the world.

Car: Honda Fit (Boring daily driver)

Fav Past Cars: '73 Plymouth Duster, '85 Corolla GT-S, '73 Datsun 240Z

Next Car: Something old and simple.

Car Passions: Grew up in a car crazed family and have been going to car shows with my dad since I was in a stroller. Started off with American V8's in my teen years and thought I would never own "one of those rice rockets". After I was introduced to the Japanese scene via some old Option videos I became a Japanese car geek almost overnight. My fascination with Japanese cars turned into a fascination with Japan itself. I enjoy every part of the Japan's vast automotive scene and I am always learning more about it. My old school muscle car upbringing gives me an especially strong appreciation for classic Japanese cars. I can appreciate any type of car as long as there is passion behind it.

Personal Style: Very simple! I wear jeans and a t-shirt nearly everyday.

Favourite Band of the Moment: Dragon Ash

Personal Motto: "Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere.." - Bruce Springsteen

A friend of mine sent me a link this morning showing a new MX-5 special edition from Mazda of France. Designed by LK Paris, the concept seems to be capitalizing on the flat black trend, which is apparently alive and well. I'm not sure if the friendly little Roadster is the best candidate for the flat black treatment, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless. What do you think? -Mike Garrett Source: Left Lane News

It's hard to believe this massive event is only a couple months away now.

Check out this fresh preview video that was just released. Never before have so many high profile time attack cars gathered in one spot to do battle...

Sometimes it's amazing what you can find in your own backyard. Or your old backyard I should say. A couple weeks ago I was visiting my family in the Fresno area when my brother told me about a car shop near his work that I should check out. So one rainy afternoon I packed up the camera and made a visit to Hedges Speed Shop. As shown in the opening photograph, Hedges specialty lies in early model Corvettes. Not in painstaking restorations, but in SEMA-level pro-touring builds. While I was visiting...

Today we got word of a new motorsport event that will go down this summer near Virginia City, Nevada. The Spectre 341 Challenge is a hillclimb event being put on Spectre Performance in the spirit of the old Virginia City Hillclimb. This no-holds barred run down a closed mountain road is open to everything from pro-touring muscle cars to tuner cars. They must, however, be street-registered vehicles. More details are on the way, but it's sounding like quite the event and we are planning on making...

I might be just a little biased in favor of the new Chevrolet Camaro. After all, it's the car that won me a hundred bucks. No, I didn't win an outlaw street race. In fact I won the money long before my week-long test drive of the 2010 Camaro SS. I actually won the money from a bet with my dad. After being teased with the concept version of the Camaro for years, my dad doubted the car would ever make it to showrooms, especially given GM's financial troubles over the past year or so. Fast...

Yesterday we looked at World Racing's preparation for the 2010 season, and now it's time to catch up with another Scion race car - the Papadakis/Rockstar tC drift car driven by Tanner Foust. This rear-drive, NASCAR-powered tC debuted last year in Formula D with a number of podium finishes, and is undergoing a few changes for 2010. Last week I caught up with Stephan Papadakis and crew at a small shop in Upland to have a look at the car's progress. Overall, the tC will be largely the same...

When Audi released the second generation TT a few years ago, the car's styling won over many who weren't sold on the first generation car. With just a drop and a set of wheels, the new TT could be transformed into something special, and that's just what Christophe Waterplas of Belgium has done with his '07 TT 2.0 turbo. After starting off with a heavily modified Citroen Saxo, Christorphe picked up his new Audi after falling in love with the car's shape. He may have been a sucker...

Last week I headed over to the World Racing shop in Torrance to check with in the guys as they readied Chris Rado's time attack Scion tC for the upcoming season. It turned out the car would actually be seeing some dyno time that day, so the scheduling had worked out perfectly. Chris Rado's exploits have been featured numerous times on Speedhunters, but for me it was my first visit to the World Racing shop. Both Rado and his team are known for their bold, unique personalities and this is clearly...

A Speedhunters reader by the name of Kevin sent us an email sharing a radical BMW build he found. Based here in the US, this 1988 M5 is one of the most thorough privateer track cars I've ever seen. Weighing at a scant 2,500 lbs thanks to lots weight shaving and carbon parts, this E28 is track-only car that sees action in regional SCCA and BMW club track events. It's powered by a fully-built S38b38 (E34 M5 motor) that puts out around 370hp at the rear wheels. 370 wheel horsepower and 2,500...

As I walked through the pits at the March Meet last weekend passing drag cars of all shapes and sizes, I spotted an absolute monster of a vehicle. Was that an old school ambulance? Indeed it was. From the time when they were made from fullsize passenger cars and not from vans. And it wasn't just any old ambulance, but one of the fastest in the world. Meet Nurse Ratchet. Built out of a 1968 Oldsmobile ambulance (amber lamps?), this former medical transport now finds itself being hurled down the...

Alright, here's a build that may lack speed, but more than makes up for it with charm. David as big fan of the Speedhunters and is living a bit of the dream life, restoring vintage cars in at his home in Nagoya, Japan. David's stable includes several different JDM classics, and the latest addition is this 1967 Mitsubishi Minica 360 micro wagon. It seems that a lot of restoration projects start off being found in a field somewhere, and this car is no different. After discovering the little...

I've been shooting time attack events in California for a while now, and at each event I always find myself gravitating towards the cars built by Evasive Motorsports. Part of it is the fact they are usually at the top of their class, but another was their perfect resemblance to the Japanese time attack cars we love. Needless to say, when Evasive main man Mike Chang asked me to come out and have a look at the shop, I couldn't turn him down. Tucked away in an industrial park in La Puente, California...

As we gear up for the onslaught of the 2010 season, everyone seems to be getting busy. Yesterday I tagged along with Chris Rado and the World Racing team to a dyno session for their time attack Scion, and in just a bit I'll be heading out to the Inland Empire to get the latest on the Rockstar Drift tC. Before that though, I need to finish up my coverage from the weekend's Famoso March Meet. As I mentioned earlier, I was a little bummed to see so many cool cars already being loaded up, but...

Honda's new CR-Z has only been on sale in Japan for a couple of weeks now, and already tuners are jumping into the fray to see what they can do with the "Sports Hybrid". Spoon's CR-Z has already been outfitted with uprgaded brakes, suspension, wheels, an exhaust system and an ECU tune. Seems quite promising so far. Spotted over at Autoblog . -Mike Garrett

Moving right along, here's the second part of my trip to Famoso Raceway for the 2010 March Meet. March has always seemed like the unofficial start of the racing season, and taking in this drag race culture was a fantastic way for me to kick off the 2010 season. If you think stance is only about slammed ride height and stretched tires, think again. The stance on this Barracuda drag car is as mean as it gets. As I walked through the pits where the retro funny cars were being worked on, I kept likening...

Hello Speedhunters my name is Mathieu van den Oever and I am from Utrecht in The Netherlands. After I had stopped skateboarding due to injuries, my love for racing and drifting took over and it has not stopped since. Things got even worse after my first trip to Japan where I got introduced to cars and products I could only dream of before. At the moment I am the photographer of the Total Mazda MaX5 Cup (which you can compare to the Spec Miata races in the U.S.) Besides that, I cover events for Turn1...

Reader's Month might be over, but we are always looking for cool reader-owned vehicles or guest blogs to post up. Here we have a JDM-spec Mitsubishi FTO GPX that belongs to reader Jacob of Australia. The FTO might not be the most popular platform around, but you have to love the 2.0L V6 that revs all the way up to 8250 RPM. Cool car, Jacob! -Mike Garrett

This weekend a huge number of drag racers gathered at Famoso Raceway near Bakersfield to take part in the annual March Meet. The March Meet has long been one of the biggest nostalgia drag gatherings around and this year was no different, even with rain off and on throughout the weekend. With Sunday looking like the day with the smallest chance of the wet stuff, I headed up to Famoso to have a look. My ride to Bakersfield was this Inferno Orange 2010 Camaro SS. I'll have more on my experiences...

Well it's Friday, the last day of Skyline Week. Have you guys had enough yet? To finish off my journey through the Speedhunters archives, I've assembled a gallery highlighting some of the late model Skylines and GT-R's featured on the site. I've included V35 and V36 chassis cars, as well as the R35 GT-R. Above, we have the Amuse R35 driven by the late Tanabe-san at Tsukuba Circuit. The Mine's R35 SpecX 6.0 , shot by Dino. Zeem's V36 sedan riding as low as possible and repping...
