Car Passions: Grew up in a car crazed family and have been going to car shows with my dad since I was in a stroller. Started off with American V8's in my teen years and thought I would never own "one of those rice rockets". After I was introduced to the Japanese scene via some old Option videos I became a Japanese car geek almost overnight. My fascination with Japanese cars turned into a fascination with Japan itself. I enjoy every part of the Japan's vast automotive scene and I am always learning more about it. My old school muscle car upbringing gives me an especially strong appreciation for classic Japanese cars. I can appreciate any type of car as long as there is passion behind it.

Personal Style: Very simple! I wear jeans and a t-shirt nearly everyday.

Favourite Band of the Moment: Dragon Ash

Personal Motto: "Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere.." - Bruce Springsteen

I saw this photo posted in the Ziptied "Pics of the Day" thread and had to post it here. I don't know where the picture was taken or who shot it, but street drift pictures are always cool, and are even better with cars like this. This JZZ30 Soarer looks to be a part of Team Noisemaker and is obviously sliding around a street somewhere in Japan. According to the EXIF data, the photo was taken back in 2005. Anyone know more about this car? I can't recall seeing recently at any events...

I was digging through my hard drive looking for photos of classic Mazdas and one of my finds was this shot right here. I took this picture of a Mazda Familia Rotary Coupe at the JCCA meet at Tsukuba Circuit last summer. The Familia Rotary Coupe was used during Mazda's early racing days and saw action in a number of late '60s and early '70s touring car events including the Spa 24 Hours. Mazda's experience racing these cars would of course lead to bigger ventures like the famous 787's...

If you look at all of Mazda's sports cars from recent times, the two that stand out the most have to be the RX7 and the MX-5. The "Seven" is of course known for its unconventional rotary engine while the MX-5 is the world's best selling sports car due to its low price and high fun factor. What do you get when you combine both? You get cars like this NA6CE Miata owned by AJ Phelps from the Vancouver, BC area. AJ saw that we were featuring Mazda this month and sent us some photos...

My mind has been going kind of crazy over the past few days thinking of what kind of Mazda material to post here. There's just so much to choose from. Anyways, with all this Mazda madness I have been thinking a lot about of the FC model RX7, which in my opinion is one of the best looking Japanese car designs of the 1980's. I was thinking about some of the cool FC's I've seen lately and decided to upload a desktop of SKR Engineering's FC time attack car that I saw back in November...

When Mazda comes to mind, you probably think of flame-spitting RX7 or a nimble Roadster. The nameplate just isn't associated with ground scraping VIP sedans, or is it? This VIP Mazda Sentia (Mazda 929 in the states) I spotted on Minkara could certainly hang with any Nissan or Toyota sedan out there. This example looks to have radiused fenders to help achieve that perfect stance, in addition to all the other standard VIP bits. These cars can be picked up for pennies on the used car market, and...

Since I knew January was going to be Mazda month, I have been planning to do a post with photos of various grassroots RX7 drift cars I have shot in the USA and in Japan over the past year or two. As I hunted through my old photos trying to remember which events had cool RX7's, I realized that RX7 drift cars are actually pretty rare. Sure, there's quite a few of them out there, but compared to something like a Silvia or even an AE86, their numbers are small. I guess that makes seeing one even...

A few weeks ago when I went to Tsukuba Circuit to get some extra shots for my Temple of Speed story, I happened to arrive just as a big RX7 meeting was wrapping up. I didn't know the event was going on and I was kicking myself for not coming earlier and shooting it for Mazda Month. There were a few cars still hanging around in the paddock though, and one of them was the RX8 demo car from Fujita Engineering. There are a lot of tuned RX8's in Japan, but this one is probably my favorite. I love...

After unveiling the all new 2010 Mustang at the LA Auto Show in November, Ford has wasted no time moving on to the "flagship" version of the Mustang, the Shelby GT500. The new GT500 will appear at the the Detroit Auto Show this month and is packing a lot of improvements over the old GT500. For starters, if the 500hp of the old car wasn't enough for you, there's more of that. The 2010 GT500 will now make 540hp and 510 foot lbs of torque from its supercharged 5.4 liter V8. External...

Some of you guys asked for a high res desktop version of the 180SX "wheelie" photo I took at Nikko Circuit during the MSC event, so here you go. Widescreen and standard versions are available now in the Desktops section. Happy New Year! -Mike Garrett

Some bad news for Aussie drift fans came recently when Drift Australia announced that Toyo Tires has suspended its title sponsorship of the series, forcing the 2009 season to be reduced to just one event. Toyo says the "global economic climate" has forced them to cut back on their sponsorship activities, leaving Drift Australia without the support needed to run the full schedule its had in past years. According to the Drift Australia website, there will be a single championship round held...

Over the past days we've made a number of posts looking back at the year in various racing series around the world, and I want to continue on that theme with this post. Since Japanese tuning culture is a big part of Speedhunters, I figured I'd put together a post looking back at some of the tuning trends and breakthroughs seen in Japan over the past year. Like most other countries, 2008 has been a tough year for Japan economically, but there was still a lot to talk about in the world of car...

Right now Japan is entering it's annual New Year holiday where companies shut down and everyone heads home to spend time with their families, eating traditional foods and that sort of thing. I guess its the opposite from the West where people get together with family for Christmas and then party with their buddies on New Years. Anyways, there won't be much going on here in Japan until Tokyo Auto Salon starts on January 9th. As I sit here in the house trying to stay warm, I figured I'll...

I'm going to continue my "Photos of the Year" contribution with some favorites of my own photos I shot this year. As I expected, it was pretty tough to limit my selections to just a handful, and I'm sure there are stories that I'm forgetting completely. Being based in Japan, I've had the opportunity to shoot some pretty remarkable things over the past months and I'm really happy with the way we have showcased the "diversity" of Japanese car culture here on...

I was leisurely browsing through the pages of the Feb. 2009 issue of Option Magazine tonight when I came across some big news about 2008 D1GP series champion Daigo Saito. For 2009 he will be leaving his JZX100 Chaser behind and switching to a Ford Mustang GT. Yep, that's right....a Mustang in the Japanese D1 series. Saito's official website confirms the news. The car is being built by the Japanese aero parts maker Behrman and is expected to produce 7-800hp. I wonder how the "JDM Fanboys"...

It's already well into the afternoon of December 26 here in Japan, but it's still Christmas Day in some parts of the world right? I have uploaded a few new high res desktop wallpapers for you guys, including a request of the 510 and Z rally cars under the backdrop of Mt. Fuji at the Nismo Festival. You'll also find a shot of one of the JGTC R34 GT-R's as well as standard and widescreen shots of the ASM S2000 at Tsukuba Circuit during the Rev Speed Time Attack. Check out the Desktops...

The 2008 Super GT season can basically be summed up with one word, or three letters rather - GT-R . From the start of the season at Suzuka Circuit in March to the closer at Fuji in November, all eyes were on the Nissan GT-R's that filled the grid in the GT500 class. There were some other exciting moments this season outside of "GT-R mania" , and I'll try to include some of those in this look back at Super GT '08. Following the unveiling of the GT500 GT-R in the offseason people...

2008 was a big year for the D1 Grand Prix. Even though there were no overseas D1GP events this year, a lot of interesting things happened in the Japanese series. A close points battle, new events and venues, the return of old faces, and several new machines helped to make '08 a notable year for D1GP. At the D1 events I went to this year, it was easy to see that people's enthusiasm for D1 in Japan is still going strong eight years after the series was launched. Now let's take a look back...

Oh great, more bad news from the auto industry here. Autoblog is reporting on a rumor that much hyped FR sports coupe being developed by Subaru and Toyota has been put on hold until 2012 at the earliest. I can't really say that I didn't see this one coming with the constant stream of negative news coming from the industry lately. Unlike the the Lexus LF-A or next gen NSX, this affordable car actually seemed like a possible purchase for me, and I'm sure a lot of other people felt the same...

I was backing up some of my recent photos onto external hard disk this afternoon when I realized that I haven't made any desktop wallpapers from the 2008 Nismo Festival yet. I liked this shot of Hoshino-san in the Calsonic Group A R32 Skyline, so I started there. Widescreen and standard versions are available now in the Desktops section. Also, if there's other Nismo Fest pics you guys want in high res, let me know and I'll try to upload some. After all, Christmas is coming up in a couple...

Tsukuba Circuit , a place that every fan of Japanese car tuning should be familiar with. Tsukuba may not host large events like Formula 1 or even Super GT, but it's still one of the most recognized racing circuits in Japan, if not the world. It's been featured in countless videos, games, and magazines, and it's the birthplace of time attack competition. I guess I sort of lucked out marrying a girl that happens to come from the Tsukuba area. I have been to this track so much over the past...
