It takes a certain type of individual to really stand out and make a difference to the lives of others. The automotive world is no different. So this year, we dug deep and picked out a handful of individuals that stood out and made a difference in the car world. At the end of the day, an automobile is just a cold hunk of metal. It takes the beating heart of a driven and passionate personality to turn it nto something with a soul. Here are our nominees for the 2011 Personality of the Year and remember...

Photography is, mostly, a rather geeky affair. We, as photographers, constantly nerd out over numbers. And to those that aren't versed with the language of photography think, we light capturists, are talking in some alien language. Foreign terms like shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and ISO, along with all the numbers associated with those things, make photography seem like scientific process. To a lot of people, if I told someone that I shot a photo with a 135mm with an aperture of F2...

These past few days, I've been digging through the year's photo archives and I've enjoyed the trip down memory lane. As great as that nostalgic trip was, I found myself feeling a bit bad as I've forgotten some of the photo shoots I've been on. When you're in the grind of going to shoot after shoot, often the photographic events start to blur and blend into one another. But if there was one shoot that stood out as memorable and unique, it was when I spent a morning with Vaughn...

I am, by no means, new to press events. But to this day, I still find them to be a strange affair with an almost fantasy-like quality. Back in August, I had the opportunity to attend the North American debut of Pagani's newest car , the Huayra. It was rather posh event filled with free flowing champagne, fruit infused sparkling water and exquisite hors d'oeuvres whose names I'll never be able to pronounce. And in those few hours, I was in the fantasy land created by Mr. Pagani himself...

With the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ now unveiled to the public, it was time for the Scion version to have its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, in the heart of Hollywood, California, Scion put on an invite-only event to debut the fifth car in their line up, the FR-S. And here is the final production version in the flesh. The exterior of the car looks very much the same as Toyota's offering in Japan... ...Although there are some slight differences. Compared to the JDM model that Dino sampled...

The glowing embers from Formula DRIFT Irwindale may have been completely extinguished by now, but that doesn't stop those that were there to reminisce about what was arguably, the best FD event of all time. For those that weren't in attendance, luckily, there's videographers like Zak Kerbelis to do their best to capture elements of the event that just can't be live streamed: the tense mood and the atmosphere.

Notice how the film starts off black and white then slowly introduces in color --a brilliant bit of editing.

The customized 1/18th die cast model doesn't have the biggest following. But it does have a lot of die hard hobbyists taking completely stock models and modifying them to however they see fit which results in some truly spectacular results. Chris Lee is one of those guys. And since you can't just go out and buy 1/18th scale aftermarket parts, Chris meticulously modifies or hand makes everything for his models. I don't even want to ask how many hours Chris spends molding, shaping, sanding...

Last year, we gave Miata connoisseur, car designer and 1/18th scale model car customizer, Chris Lee a visit. We first looked at his massive collection in its entirety, which you can see here . We then took a look at a couple of his creations in detail, which can be seen here . Since that visit, he has had a few new additions to the collection so I thought I'd give him another visit and see what sort of scale model customizing Chris has been up to. Chris has five new custom models and on this...

The City of Industry in southern California is home to wide range of car tuners. One of those is SP Engineering. Founded in 1996 by Alex Shen, SP immediately began making a name for itself by building all sorts of cars for customers. Focusing initially on the Japanese aftermarket industry, word began to spread about SP’s powerful and reliable street cars. Their 13,000 sq.ft. facility houses five lifts, a Dynojet chassis dyno, office space for their sales staff and warehouse space to house all...

High horse power cars are loads fun to drive and to get rides in. But sometimes, a little bit of horse power in an equally small car can be even more fun. This is the case with many cult classics over the years. Think about the Honda Civic, the Mazda Miata, the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Golf. All those cars are practical cars with just enough power to some fun. The biggest characteristic of all was the fact that they were an absolute hoot to drive around a corner. Chevy is looking to get...

SEMA is a trade show which exists solely so that people can impress other people. Be it with their booth set ups, car builds or flashy after parties, SEMA is always dressed to impress. Though not everyone will be able to --especially with the hundreds of cars on display. So to have a show stopping car, it either must've had pixey dust sprinkled on it or be built by some truly inspired and insane people. This Cadillac is one of those cars. The car started off originally as a 1960 Cadillac Coupe...

Two days is mere minutes in SEMA time. There's so much to do and so much to see in the three giant convention halls and an outside parking lot. As I made my way around the SEMA show floor in fast forward, I saw fleeting glimpses of cars. So when a car at SEMA does catch my eye, it means that it is something rather special. Take this 2010 Mercedes E350 for example. It's a car that was floating in a sea of other automobiles trying their hardest to stand out, be different and noticed. But by...

When you think of a major professional drift event, the first things that come to mind are the drivers, the cars and their respective teams. In essence however, they are mere cogs in a much bigger machine. Behind the scenes, events like Formula D take months of planning, a fully dedicated staff and, of course, the famous last minute dash to the finish line. In the lead up to the final round at Irwindale, we decided to take a peek at how it all gets put together. This is what Irwindale Speedway looks...

When you see a finished product, no matter what it may be, it is hard to imagine all the planning, conceptualizing and work that went into it. Designers have always said that the best designed products are the ones that look like they haven't been designed at all. Take for example, products made from a personal electronics company with a fruit as its name and logo, any Braun house appliance, or a high-end sports car. Thousands of hours have gone into the creation of these various things and it's...

Even when you're standing on the salt watching a 300+ MPH streamliner pass you by from half a mile away, it's hard to realize just how fast the darn car is traveling. Luckily, there has been big advances with onboard video cameras and the land speed team, Poteet and Main, plastered ReplayXD cameras all over their streamliner, the Speed Demon, as they made a 462MPH pass at Bonneville. It's already amazing to see a full run in a streamliner from the cockpit, but its even more amazing to see the full run in so many different camera angles.

There are moments when 400+ MPH seems completely peaceful and serene, but once the parachute kicks out, the truth of just how fast that long hunk of car was moving strikes home.

The second and final round of the Wold Drift Series in China has concluded at the Yellow Dragon Sports Center in the city of Hang Zhou. It was an event full of upsets, spectacular crashes and dance routines. But after the tire smoke cleared a local driver, Zhang ShaoHua, stood on top. Another local Chinese driver, Zhang ShengJun, took second with Team America was represented by Vaughn Gittin Jr. on the 3rd step in the podium. Seeing how this was also the final round of the 2011 season, a champion...

In life, theres are always firsts for everything. This past week has been a whole check list of firsts and one of those is my first time in the country of China. I'm in the country following the drifting exploits of Team Need for Speed drivers, Matt Powers and Vaughn Gittin Jr., at the Yellow Dragon Sports Center in the city of Hang Zhou. The stadium usualy caters to football games (aka soccer) and also serves as a training facility for Olympians. But this week, the running track has been paved...

Enjuku Racing has been well known in the Nissan S-Chassis world for over 12 years. From providing great parts and service, to our past professional Formula Drift programs, we know how to get things done! We decided it was time to branch out into some newer chassis and make a big impression. So for SEMA this year, we've joined forces with BC Racing Suspension to build a Hyundai Genesis that would turn a few heads. We removed the stock turbocharged 2.0L Hyundai engine to make room for something...

Chances are, if you’ve been to a car show, Formula Drift event, Road Race, or supercar meet in the past three decades, you’ve seen a set of HRE wheels. As one of the last remaining wheel companies designing, manufacturing and finishing wheels completely in-house, I thought it would be interesting to take you for a closer look at HRE and how we create what many consider the finest wheels in the world. HRE Wheels’ 60,000 square foot facility is located in North San Diego County in...

The Sunday following the rather electric night at Irwindale Speedway, Formula DRIFT held its annual end of year banquet. It was an evening filled with flowing drinks, good laughs, a three course meal... ...and it also gave Formula D co-founders, Ryan Sage and Jim Liaw, the chance to say their thanks to everyone that participated in the 2011 season. At the banquet, Formula D judge and technical adviser, Tony Angelo, announced that he would be stepping down from his position and would once again be...
