In the second photo of the Greddy 9, the yellow car sitting on its left, isn't that RE-Amemiya's GT-04 widebody? that had to be my favorite widebody kit for the RX7. it looks just like the GT300 racecar.

REXtreme: I agree the only reason why Scoot would be considered for the list is because of the motor its sporting but I never had the intention to put it in a top 5 list...maybe a top 10 but for sure not Top5. Like you said there are so many other companies out there that have been around longer and have produced amazing rx7's that are far more capable and a lot more insane.

Zanthrax: I agree that the RX7 factory body alone is a great car but if you look at the Scoot/Tamon Rx7 as a kit car or a super car built by Scoot and designed by Tamon based off an RX7 [just like many of the coach builders out there that base their cars off other cars] it comes out to be a clean super car that looks and sounds like a super car and has the power to back it up.

The scoot FD's engine is as cool as it's body is horrible.

The car hardly recognizable as an RX-7 which is a shame since it's already a beautiful car to begin with.

Same goes for the Veilside Fortune FD imho

I chose JDM as the criteria and the ones that were very influential in the scene that remains in Japan today.

Think about the other car's. D1 cars from Apexi. Amemiya etc, Super GT, Super Taikyu wining cars, Touge Monsters, Feed cars. Veilside's best. R-Magic, cars with 700hp, KSP 9 second street tyre FD etc etc

I did a photo shoot years ago with Scoot. I was considering the 4 rotor but mainly because it has a heritage also. The silver car is actually the NB7 that Koseki-san ran to 327kph in NZ. The Red Amemiya bodied car adorned my screen background for a long time before it became the silver 4 Rotor. It is now a crazy machine with almost instant throttle response.

Just did a quick check. I have almost 200 links to Japanese Rx7 tuners on my blog all of which have produced countless demo cars. Narrowing down a list is almost impossible. I ran a ranking poll some time back and the results are on the blog somewhere.

sorry, but the front end of Amemiya Greddy 9. 2002 is a disgrace to design. The Knight sport isn't much better

Russell: First I want to say that I'm a big fan of your blog. You are a Mazda/RX7/Rotary Guru in my books. On to the subject. You did an awesome job with this article/Top 5. I couldn't agree more with the TA-SPL2002! Even though I think the newer TA cars are bad ass I still hold high respects for the older TA cars that were/are still capable of being driven on the streets with registration...a purist so to say.

Also, I wanted to hear what your thoughts are on the Scoot 24b street RX7? I always thought its a bitchin car. The TAMON Design RX7 [updated front] looks like a whole other type of super car with a nice 24b screaming under the hood. I wouldn't mind having one of those to drive around town =]

Hi Brian,

It's the same car a year on. The car has always had a slight duck egg blue tinge.

I was lucky to be at Ebisu for the Rotary an Roadster in 2003 where I shot that image. The car was enhaced with a "Hood 9" bonnet and AD side diffusers in 2003.

If anyone wants to try and narrow down their list, there's about 50 more I wanted to add that i'm sure includes your favourite. If you scroll down the right side of my blog, You can always see the best of the best. (Including mine haha)

The GReddy 9 and the Amemiya 2002 spec are just awesome.

Is the car at the very top of the page the same one as the 2002 car? It seems to have a slight "mint" colour to it. LOVE IT
