Its alright, I've seen a few, but they only seem to be practical in areas like california. Its probably horrible in the snow..and rain...and wind...ok the weather and the smart dont get along. But its quirky and different, which appeals to some.

" I have to say I am still chuckling over this one, sorry but every single Smart I have ever seen was being passed by everybody on the freeway or whatnot. Also I don't know about you Patrick but if I was driving a Smart for some ungodly reason and a bunch of little kids on the school bus were waving saying how "tiny" or "cute" it was, I think would have to surrender my balls. I am sorry but no real man wants the words tiny, cute, adorable, etc, used when describing him or his car. So maybe it works for some people but my honest opinion is that those people are fooling themselves into thinking it is a great little car when in reality it is a great little car to be SEEN IN. If the economy had never dumped then this car wouldn't have made it to the US; I am sure there are people out there who buy because they genuinely like it but I'll be damned if that is more than 20% of the buyers. There are 2 reasons you buy this car: one is that you are a conservative spender in every sense of the word and that you love that extra happy meal's worth of savings on each tank, the other is that you wish to be seen and make a statement that you have social integrity and that you are in fact SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT! Pshhh please maybe if we all drove Smarts we would be but the fact is that hybrid, electric, and hydrogen cars are the way forward and all this car really represents is what the ultimate form of the Geo Metro should have been.

That is one ugly thing...

It's tacky in so many ways inside and out, and not in a charming way. As BlueSlug stated, for the price a much better car could be had.

I would like to see a smart with good wheel fitment though, that would be something.

also forgot to add those other cars a said would be front wheel drive front engine while the smart is rear wheel drive rear engine. possibly migh change my view on my car the more the research i do.

very nice review of the smart car. i have never honestly looked into the car in depth due to im more into japanese cars and most of my knowledge of european cars has come from watching top gear. honestly for the money though id get a honda fit 1st gen or a yaris 4 door hatch. then spend the little extra money on a few aftermarket upgrades. but then you dont get that good of gas mileage, carbiolet status, or interest from evryone on earth. now with what you said "And how could you be unhappy driving the smart with the front end that appears to be smiling every time you walk up to it?" thats the reason why i drive a first generation celica. www.flickr.com/.../2064860446 long live smileys!

i think they're alright... but for the MSRP the competition is just far better. here in canada you can get a mk4 golf brand new for 2k less than the smart, or a versa, yaris, fit, corolla, civic, et cetera. most of those will do the same or near in fuel economy, and all offer far more space and more than twice the seating ability. i think if they had kept the 3cyl deisel from the first-gen smart they used to sell here, it would still make sense, but now that it's a gas-powered 4-banger it doesn't.
