The Red Bull Volkswagen Team took it easy today to ensure their 1-2 lead remained intact, without problems. The lead VW's stopped early in the stage to wait for their team mate, Dieter Depping so they could run safely in formation. This allowed Joan Roma to take the first stage win for the Mitsubishi Lancer on this year's rally. Robbie Gordon

You may have noticed there was no Dakar review yesterday. This was because the organisers had to cancel the stage due to fog. The stage could not be re-routed as it crossed the Andes. BUT, the big news today is, we have a new leader! Giniel de Villiers has taken the lead after team-mate, Carlos Sainz crashed into a ravine, just 79km's into the stage

I've been on the look out for good Dakar pics, but they have been surprisingly hard to find. As you would imagine, Mitsubishi and VW have images on their press sites (which I will show on Part 2), but thats about it.... ...Until I discovered 'The Big Picture' section of Boston.com earlier today. I haven't come across this site before

Following a day's rest, Day 8 of competitively rallying took place on Sunday. Carlos Sainz continued to extend his lead from his Volkswagen team-mates. Carlos Sainz retook the lead today after scoring a third stage victory of the Rally. Volkswagen remain 1-2-3. Robbie Gordon was third today, which moves him up again, into the top five. Drama on Day Six of the Dakar Rally!!! A number of news sites are reporting, the overall leader, Nasser Al-Attiyah, has been disqualified from the event this evening after missing a marker point during the day. Al-Attiyah had set the fastest time of the day, increasing his lead, before disqualification. Al-Attiyah's BMW had started to overheat early
