Ok let's jump straight in and look at the dramas from further down the field at the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours. Behind the diesel class, here was another prototype race going on, that of those powered by petrol. Although a factory effort in name, the Lola Aston Martin team is closer in resource terms to the best of the privateers. A titanic battle ensued

The ACO released the provisional entry list for the 2009 24 Heures du Mans this morning. The ACO choose which entries to accept, based, mainly upon performances in the previous 24 Hour races, European and American Le Mans. 82 entries were received for 55 places. The Eleventh running of the 1000 Mile Petit Le Mans resulted in a classic Audi-Peugeot-Audi battle in the last half of the race. Andrew Jennings was at Road Atlanta taking these fantastic images for us. There was drama even before the race had started. 2nd place starter Allan McNish lost control on a warm-up lap and spun his Audi R10 TDi into the barriers

Thursday Thursday night was eventful at La Sarthe. Red flags and an extended session made the first part of final qualifying exciting. As mid-night approached, most of the teams went for race set ups, but it gave the opportunity for the Charouz Lola Aston Martin move up the grid while the big boys were not watching.
